ESEA suspends five players implicated in leaked recording

Three former Rebirth members and two OCG players will be unable to compete on ESEA as ESIC complete their investigation.

ESEA has announced the suspension of five players from its platform amid an ongoing investigation into match-fixing in North America from the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC). The news comes in the aftermath of a transcript released by Dust2.us on Friday in which three former Rebirth members openly discussed plans to fix two matches in ESEA MDL Season 35.

Sebastian "retchy" Tropiano and Carson "nosraC" O'Reilly, two players currently playing for ChocoCheck, were suspended alongside their former teammate Kevin "4pack" Przypasniak. OCG members Alex "vek" Voynov and David "J0LZ" Jolin were also handed suspensions, the former being mentioned by retchy as "agreeing to radar" and the latter as "being okay with it." All five players are currently banned on ESEA until May 3 for a "Gambling Violation."

vek has been suspended by ESEA

The suspensions will have an impact on the current season of ESEA Premier as both teams are slated to compete in the playoffs, starting on April 13. ChocoCheck currently have enough members on their roster to play with two-stand-ins, whereas OCG have no additional players and will have to hope for an exception from ESEA to add additional members.

The announcement from ESEA is the first action taken upon North American players in a year-long investigation into match-fixing in the region, with ESIC set to officially release its first report within the next ten days.

On Wednesday, ESIC Commissioner Ian Smith revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was now involved in the ongoing investigation, focused on a subset of players who were bribed by outside "betting syndicates" in order to fix matches in an organised fashion.

The following five players are suspended until ESIC concludes its investigation:

Canada Sebastian "retchy" Tropiano - ChocoCheck
United States Carson "nosraC" O'Reilly - ChocoCheck
United States Kevin "4pack" Przypasniak - inactive
Canada Alex "vek" Voynov - OCG
Canada David "J0LZ" Jolin - OCG

They just banned them because the recordings "leaked" .... the recordings are part of the investigation which will end soon, they will receive the ban than by ESIC, and other TOs, maybe Valve and hopefully the FBI banhammer will also smash lol

2021-04-04 00:46
a 1 month ban is not even a slap on the wrist, regardless, i 100% believe these players have peers within esea and faceit management that are protecting them. if a boxer gets caught throwing a match his license is permanently suspended and he or she can do time. people do serious time for match fixing any sport that can be legally bet on. but here we have the company whom sponsors, host, develops the league in which they clearly match fixed in is like its ok fellas we understand you were pressured and it was a mistake. no these morons committed a real world crime and should be punished appropriately.

What part of "they will receive their ban when the investigation is complete" you didn´t understand? They are suspended now untill the investigation is complete (which is said to be in two weeks or so) after that they will actaully receive their ban. They won´t be banned just for a month, this is just to prevent them playing untill they actually receive the ban.

It's only usually Aussies because ESIC doesn't have the resources to target anywhere else. The match fixing and betting scandals are more then likely FAR bigger in EU and NA then in Australia. If you kept up with the people who were banned in AUS, a VAST number of them have put in for a review as they didn't even bet in their leagues, but rather on international games and were still banned for it. ESIC has missed EVERY promised deadline since banning them. Now I'm not condoning the acts, the betting, the players who bet against themselves etc. What I'm saying is, this was rife across the entire scene, AUS is just the example maker.

to be fair, they're like tier 4 players (even by NA standards probably, so probably tier 5 in EU) who were never going to advance to greater teams. the risk was probably worth it for them just because this is where their career more or less plateaus, so they decided to be unethical, mortgage their reputation, and do this sort of thing

unlike ibp, these player had no future in cs with online era and what is happening in NA rn. So for ibp years of tier 1 salary and sponsors were totally not worth the fix but for these orgless players thousands of dollars that they took were totally worth it.

Yeah, but they had to sleep on couches and had trouble to pay for good meals. They had to pay for their travel expenses and everthing at the time and they were not winning enough when they did it. Imagine you have to pay for everything, while having no salary and travel across the country at your expense to try to get the prize money. Na cs was really poor and at the time, there was no regulation on betting pixel arts.

I think the ban should be longer than just 1 month. They can come back and do the same thing all over again. They probably won't even learn anything from this. A longer ban is warranted in the hopes that they will learn from their mistake and actually help to keep the NA CSGO scene alive.

Yo le noob, Use your brain cells pls. What part of «The bans will be handed once the investigation is concluded » do you not understand??? This month ban is just to prevent them from playing before the longer bans are issued. Damn I’m starting to understand why NA players would tell themselves its a good idea to throw two months after an hltv article revealing a massive investigation on NA MDL. You guys are not the brightest bulbs of the bunch huh?

Lol silly me for totally misunderstanding the article upon my initial view. Thanks for the correction! It's good to know that this is only a temporary ban assuming that they are rightfully punished in the future. Although you could ditch the condescending attitude / tone - totally un-necessary. One mistake makes someone and their entire country stupid I guess. I never said I was the smartest person nor that the U.S. was the smartest country. Minus your attitude, I appreciate the correction :)

You must be 15 years old or somewhere in that range if you don't think losing North America would be a devastating loss. You must not know how money works. This isn't about N/A being the best country in the world my man... stop being so angry at the world. If E/U and N/A were flipped and we were losing E/U it would be the same exact thing. A place of that magnitude that has had that much impact on a game will ALWAYS hurt the scene. Kind of like how Asia was never big into CS. That isn't good. Good luck having a world wide scene without N/A and most of Asia. Seems logical to me.

No pal im well into my 30's, Resorting to age already tells me the kinda of no spine you are. The game has already lost NA and nothing has changed and nothing will. People don't buy CS because of a team or a player, they buy it for the game you absolute tool. The rest of your incoherent ramblings are whataboutisms which are the main point of any smooth brains arguments. EU is not NA, EU is established in Esports NA is barely a thing and it's taken 30 years to get to this no where point. I find it hilarious you still think NA is something special, How many majors for NA? You're a joke on the world stage and the LAN stage USA.

don't you worry about the ban duration, they will most likely get jail time so it doesn't matter, don't think they will compete again anyways and if they decide to come back it's in valorant

I dunno. In USA you can make deals etc. Probably non of them go to prison when they make deals.

the worst part is, j0lz wasn't even that bad 4pack wasn't the worst player, but he was always very toxic and cocky, trashtalked players on higher level than him etc deserved bans but when it was all happening it was all clear as day, expecting another 10 bans AT LEAST, if not 20. NA MDL has always been fishy af.
