HenryG parts ways with Cloud9

The former commentator will take some time off as he awaits for the right opportunity to arise.

Henry "HenryG" Greer has announced his departure from Cloud9, bringing an end to his eight-month-long tenure as the General Manager of the organisation's CS:GO division.

The 32-year-old Brit linked up with the organisation in September 2020, and was responsible for the creation of the 'Colossus', a European roster that initially featured Alex "ALEX" McMeekin, Özgür "woxic" Eker, and William "mezii" Merriman as its core trio and Aleksandar "kassad" Trifunović as coach.

Cloud9 later went on to sign Patrick "es3tag" Hansen from Astralis and retain the services of Ricky "floppy" Kemery from Cloud9's previous roster, but were soon faced with issues as kassad left the lineup and "unreliable high ping" and a "compromising time zone" led to the release of woxic and signing of Erick "Xeppaa" Bach. The move, in turn, saw ALEX and es3tag both attempt to fill the role of sniper, but inconsistent results continued to plague the roster as a whole.

HenryG will be taking a break following his departure from Cloud9

The inability to gather the team in North America due to the coronavirus also added to their troubles as they were unable to build rapport and team chemistry in-person, and ultimately led to Cloud9 placing their players on the transfer list and putting their CS:GO division on hold following a group stage exit from ESL Pro League Season 13.

"It's truly a shame how things panned out with a lot of mitigating circumstances but plenty of positive memories, too," HenryG said in his announcement. "While the space is in this strange transition period I have decided to take a sabbatical and enjoy some of the normality that life has to offer. It's certainly been a while.

"I will be back eventually when the right opportunity arises."

Faze clan are scammers ( 3 years of substandard performance with the best players ever ) Team Envy are scammers ( A team built around a substandard awper ) Astralis are scammers (Ruining the prime of some of the best players and engaging in player inflation) Getting C9 to be as good as it was in such a small amount of time for a caster is an achievement and not a scam.

faze clan prolly costs more and have performed shit as well for quite some time. g2 with niko, supposedly the last piece still not winning tournaments?? why not have the same approach for everyone???

About NiKo, I think that G2 signed him giving he some power inside the team. Imagine that now kenny is benched (he wasn't performing well, is ok, but keep reading) and he's using the awp (WTF bruh NiKo AWP?!?!?!?!?!?!?!) and managing the roles in the team. Why do I say this? Before NiKo everything was working with the correct roles (in terms about natural roles of each player) and now I think he wants to frag A LOT, in first place, he joined as a other playmaker having kenny and his cousin with whose roles (3 playmakers?!?!?!?!?! LUL) now kenny is benched and he's using AWP (when he was in his prime he weren't using AWP) I think to have a secured role and just be fragging and asking for an AWP every round I'm not saying that he can't play with AWP but I think he's taking bad decisions

Agreed G2 had very set roles that mostly made very much sense. Hunter=follow up fragger/star Kennys=awper Nexa=igl who can frag Amanek=great space making support player Jackz=rifler The problem was that if Hunter wasnt fragging, Jackz would usually not be making enough of a difference fragwise. Also Kennys was obviously just too inconsistent. Now their roles are very messed up, with Niko on subpar role, and 3 support players.

About Hunter performance, he said in the lat HLTV Confirmed that he feels more confortable (and you can realize in the last matches stats) with jackz back. Pretty weird to need one player to perform well :/ (It sounds like a baiter haha)

Probably you're right, BUT making public the $$$ and the way you managed the communication about this make you look like a clown rn imo. Maybe those teams lost more money keeping in mind the expected performance but the figures weren't public and it was handled with more caution. RIP Jack Etienne and his millions
2021-04-06 13:17
Also you talked about the performance in short time, in an average team it would be ok imo. BUT HenryG said in an interview (sorry for not giving the link but I don't have time rn, I remember that was one of the first interviews with the full team), he's paying a lot for an inmediate Top10 performance, he will not wait with the classic excuse "we need more time to improve, blah blah blah..." and it will be his responsability if the team don't perform as he payed So that's why I say scammer, he promised certain things that he didn't deliver and burned money in the process.

getting deals public is a reform according to me for ppl who get overexploited in deals. idt that anyone will ever say that our expectations are not so high initially. that just reduces morale. obv u r going to say that we will win from the word go. now for #409 he didn't manage everything wrong. ig the woxic deal was bad. but alex, mezii, floppy, es3tag formed a good core. and they just needed an awper/ star player to complete the team. imo c9 jack should have had the balls like coL to go the full monty. No org gets it easy in CSGO and taking risks is a part of it.

For the first part, I think it's better to act and communicate with the fans with caution about expectations but internally obviously you have to ask for some results necessary as GM. Second part, the most GMs at T1 don't have this kinda mistakes with signins as these two: You signed a coach first (ok, well done) and afterwards you signed the IGL (the process seems pretty logic, everything ok here. But it's expected to select the player keeping in mind what the coach thinks). Months later, the coach part ways after not reaching an angreement with the IGL (WTF ?!?!?!?). As GM you are looking to best players (ok) and you sign one of the best awpers benched/free agent BUT you know how did he get benched in mouz (if you don't know you have to ask what happened). Anyways, you believe you will work to improve his weaknesses and everything will be fine and you pay $1,35kk (salary + buyout / twitter.com/HenryGcsgo/status/1307399633.. the transfer fee is reported about $300k). 4 months later (please read again, FOUR MONTHS) you RELEASE this guy. If you were worried about this player weaknesses outside the server, how would think you will improve this thing in just 4 months? Or if this things wouldn't worry you, why would you sign a guy who's called "toxic woxic" for $300k? RIP 300k either way you thought about this. Finally, about these 2 mistakes, are really bad imo: disagreements with coach-IGL, RIP $300k and the awp player (top 3 players in the world are awpers, so it's an important piece in a team) About going full monty, it seems Jack have unlimited money haha, so, in this way, you have two options: buyout really good active players despite the cost or get free agents and invest a lot in the staff in sights to improve the team to reach a similar level idk, many things that happened with this team were a joke

yes they made these mistakes and yet just in april they were a piece away from being a top 10 team. they were playing games competitively and close to winning them. in csgo giving leeway for say a year is normal and as I told there are many teams who still struggle to make improvements. C9 were on this path much more than say OG and again all criticism came only from the public contracts which for all u know could be the norm in the industry. There are many more fooleries committed by orgs for eg. 1. Mad Lions selling bubzki 2. Faze clan allowing niko igl 3. Na'Vi retaining flamie Now those are decisions which have actually ruined some players' primes, destroyed actually good teams, unethical practices.

2021-04-06 11:29
partially his fault, he called it a colossus so people had a lot of ammo to talk shit but tbh people's expectancies were unrealistic for a new project no matter how it was marketed. Yes, the project was disappointing because at the end of the day they were still a 200k salary/month team losing to some random Ivans from Serbia at their local internet cafe but oh well. Why invest if you can't tolerate expected failure?

The only thing about moses not getting sacked is cuz liquid players are better by a mile than C9 tier 3 roster and they have some results. HenryG rly knows how to sell himself and make up a story about "super team". Its like polished lies , he was jjust there to pick up paychecks.

Are u kidding? "Unfortunate especially for Henry and the players". Players got the biggest paydays in their entire carriers and it's not even close. I'm certain no one will ever pay them as much as C9 did. And they probably are getting a huge compensation for C9 breaking the contracts as well. Probably the same thing with Henry, if C9 was stupid enough to not include the part where the team needed to have some success for Henry to receive full salary or additional bonuses.

Also, it is not only HenryG's fault, it is also mf ALEX being shitty IGL, and es3tag doing dumb individual plays (+also put out-of-his-role by again terrible IGL that is ALEX) plus not delivering the expected performance as a pure fragger.

none of c9s failures were henrys fault. he bought really good players, he had a really solid core, but first his team always lost 16-14 or OT, the players never even met aka had a bootcamp, woxic MEGA underperformed + they only played tournys since december. C9 had NO chance to succed from the beginning

lower tier teams have been throwing specific matches like c9 vs furia that have the chance of eliminating top tier teams like navi in this case for a very long time Its a massive flaw of the round-robin groups
2021-04-06 05:19

EPL seedings would not allow Navi and FURIA to play each other again, at least not until very deep in the tournament so it would make zero sense as FURIA would not help themselves at all. Also if Navi were suffering so much why would FURIA let an underdog unknown entity like C9 through. That would cause even more damage. Either way like I said before it’s just hopeless speculation because in your mind C9 could never beat a team legitimately in a land slide

Look, I don't mind him as a commentator. He played CS at a high level back in the day, he understands the game. But he dug himself a grave by putting himself in a position to have to back up results because of the things he said. It was a gamble that clearly didn't pay off (and if it had people probably would've praised him). Point being, he was either going to crash and burn, or fly high, and unfortunately it was the former.

yeah, he did the wrong thing hyping his players up. He should've called them shit, tier2 bots. He hyped his players up and all the morons on HLTV say "COLULSSUS KEKW" whenever they lose, as if that's his fault.
2021-04-06 04:05

You missed the point by such a tremendous margin I don't even know where to begin. Hyping his players was completely fine. Every organization needs to do that, to some degree. It's called salesmanship and advertising, you put your best foot forward and try to grow your audience. It's marketing 101. What he did, however, was mention the monetary value under which each player was contracted. This was intended to be more transparent, which is not a bad thing, but it was also intended to give the appearance of a super team. If you're going to do something like that, on paper, you need to really show the proper valuation in your target acquisitions, they need to have a steady track record of high level success, and there needs to be little room for failure. The problem is, he showed that Cloud9 took a huge gamble, monetarily, on a few prospects that had performance results or attitude issues that could be scrutinized. The reason he got a ton of shit was he disclosed that C9 paid A LOT of money for a group of players who ultimately floundered. It looks bad from a management perspective, which is the issue. I have NO ILL WILL towards HenryG, I don't think he deserves the shit he's getting, but I understand where it came from.

He mentioned the monetary amount each player was contracted to make a positive step in the scene towards more transparency, yes. And if you think about it, Cloud9 did NOT take a huge gamble, initially. Let's look at the initial lineup. ALEX - an (at the time) tier1 IGL who had seen huge success in 2019 with Vitality and had captained the no.1 player in the world. woxic - a great explosive awp player who had seen success with mousesports, captained by karrigan. floppy - a good tier2 player who had carried cloud9 in NA and whom I still think has potential to be a tier1 star es3tag - had seen massive success with Astralis, tier1 player the only REAL question mark in the original starting lineup was mezii, and he turned out to be pretty decent. so this lineup looks fine on paper. was it henryG's fault that the team couldn't bootcamp, or that woxic had ping issues and had to be released?
2021-04-06 07:04
1 reply
I don't disagree with you, at all, about the positive steps. I think it was good for everyone, but the amounts paid did look bad. As an example, coL practically did the same thing through Jason Lake (we'll pay the best salaries, juggernaut etc.). People gave them a LOT of shit initially, but the potential was there. The team had a lot of proven, top-end talent and they actually performed pretty well (they're a streaky team, but they're in the Top10 which I think is at least respectable). So when I say you can scrutinize the team C9 put together, it's because there were some pretty glaring questions that hadn't been answered regarding some players. ALEX helped lead Vitality, along with ZywOo, but the systems for utilizing ZywOo existed before he joined, and the team performed perfectly well after his departure (with apEX of all people leading...). That is a pretty big question of if his leadership was truly instrumental in their success. Also, he was touted as being a fragging IGL, and we all saw how that went (also his departure from Vitality posed a HUGE question about his long-term commitment). Woxic can be amazing, on paper he was a stellar pickup, but his departure from Mousesports raised a lot of flags. People blame ping, but there were issues with his attitude near the end of his tenure in Mousesports, at least supposedly. That, and his performances had absolutely tanked prior to the signing, certainly because of online play, but attitude can be a big part of that. Floppy was ok. A lot of people saw him as the next big player from NA, I think it was a fair gamble, but it's also unfortunate they didn't manage to snag oSee at the time. On paper he's far less proven than other players (same as floppy), but his cost might've justified the gamble, since he would've been a cheaper buy. Not Henry's fault there, oSee chose his route. Es3tag looked amazing in Astralis initially, but by the time they picked him up he'd started to fall off a lot. He was never really a big, star player, and while I don't think the pick up was bad (at all, he really did show up for Astralis), C9 clearly needed a "star" player, which was woxic essentially. Mezii was obviously a question mark. I think he did fine in his role. He surprised me a bit, even, but he wasn't a "star" which C9 really needed to compliment woxic. Then we have Xeppaa. Xeppaa was inexperienced but obviously a big upcoming name in NA. But... He wasn't what C9 needed. They needed a top AWP to round out the roster once they dropped woxic. This is nothing against Xeppaa, who obviously had to do a trial by fire, he just wasn't the best decision. I knew they'd put es3tag on AWP since he'd used it before, but that was a big issue since he was never a standout with the weapon. Anyway, these are some of the reasons why I say their choices were questionable for what they paid. While it's fair to claim hindsight, I had been on the ropes about this roster from the outset, and I never understood the team decisions being made. I'm not touting myself as some guru, I'm not dealing with all the behind the scenes shit that comes with the business, but I can't imagine I'm the only one who felt this way.

His sincerity was never in question I think, by anybody The question is, where does the bluster get you? Beyond the promised performances that made him an object of derision, the resources at his disposal in order to not drop out very low in all showings should be judged as a disappointment. For the (roughly, maybe) the same investment CoL made something that banged out the gate, for a lesser investment OG had a solid core

Sure, never said he didn’t overpay them. But if you knew any of the back scenes negotiations you wouldn’t think he could do better. All I’m going to say is there was a chance he could have gotten rosters 10x better than this that didn’t happen because of factors he wants involved with. On top of that cs salaries aren’t small like they used to be, coL and OG almost certainly pay their players more than they originally did because for he over performance and every year things get more expensive

2/5 of their players already were from NA tier 2 and then arguably the best player on the team was Mezii. Alex and Esetag did not live up to the hype. It's really a shame things didn't work out with Osee and there were other solid players available or becoming available in NA around that time as well. The only player I don't see a good replacement for is Alex because there are no good tier 1 IGL's available in NA right now. I have to say it is you who are delusional. You saw how poorly the roster performed and still overestimate the value of the team.

If you knew anything about the cs contract world you would know that the top 20 players get paid exponentially more than that. Maybe the top 20th best player gets paid es3tags salary and that's a stretch. CS salaries aren't in 2014 anymore, we cant just give players sticker money and expect that to be the deal anymore. In what world are floppy, xeppaa, ALEX and es3tag no namers. Maybe you could get away with saying that was what mezii was but he was arguably the best player on the team so there's no point even saying they played like no namers.

If terrible performance is betting close to beating almost every team you play and crushing FURIA like they are silvers then alright. Overpaid sure Overrated? They were underrated the whole time what are you smoking? A loss of money? That’s what happens when mismanagement in an org makes it shoot itself int he foot and cut teams prematurely. There’s nothing pathetic about it. He built a team and it failed, you can’t say it couldn’t have succeeded because the pieces were definitely there

dis gona be good :DDD HenryG lived the dream. Given $9 million dollars and the chance to build a top international lineup. There's no sugar coating it, he really fkd it up with some of his choices. C9 thought with that kind of money they could have a top contender team but after woxic left/was removed they didnt want to throw any more money into the project and henry had nothing up his sleeve.

Obviously you haven’t done the research or seen the interviews. He had the chance to buy astralis, he tried, but the deal went through. He tried to buy xyp9x, the deal was went through. He tried to sign the Balkan superteam, the deal went through. He did his fucking best this was not the first choice. He came in on the back foot and if you knew anything about the cs scene you would know that players don’t want to take risks, so it’s a miracle he even go these names in
2021-04-06 05:40
4 replies
Yes ive heard C9 could have throw a shit tonne of money for astralis and could have throw a shit tonne of money at NiKo's superteam with him nexa hunter cold kennyS. But C9 didnt want to. Obviously you are not going to get all your first choices but you are going to get quite a few first round draft picks with the amount of money he had on offer and the chance to live in the states, (ie like 19 year old CeRq wanted to). The amount of talent out there in free agency aswell as the money to buy out 2 star players from their contracts and this was the team you built? You didnt even consult your coach on which players he wanted to work with and to make sure he's on the same page as your IGL as far as the direction of the team? It was a colossal fk up from the start.
2021-04-06 05:56
3 replies
Ofc he consulted the coach but like he and kassad said, kassad is the coach, he coaches the players. HenryG is the GM, he gets the players. HenryG cannot coach and kassad cannot GM. What’s the point of having either if they both don’t do their job properly?
2021-04-06 05:59
2 replies
kassad just said he had no control on the lineup and then ALEX is announced as the IGL and wanted to play default style of play and kassad wants to play more loosey goosey so there was no point in staying in C9 and he left early on. Yes it was Henry's job to build the lineup but if you have assets at your disposal (kassad, the second best coach in the game?) and dont use them, whats the point? Look what happens, Henry builds the lineup, coach and IGL have 2 different styles of play and the coach leaves. Your star player leaves or gets cut and suddenly you have 2 veterans and 3 rookies and no more money to rebuild. Where if you had a better veto system on the players, better communication with the people leading the team (coach and IGL) and had been smarter with your money, C9 might still be in the game. Im not going to say Henry helped caused the downfall of NA CS but he fkd up.
2021-04-06 06:16
1 reply
Sure that’s a valid criticism and I’m not delusional, there were some mistakes made but again, one party has to compromise whether that be kassad or ALEX. Neither way willing to do so and because of this kassad left. You can’t put that all on Henry as well, kassad came into the team knowing that ALEX would probably be coming and if he didn’t like that then he should never have joined.

The reason for the backlash is he put it all on himself. For signing woxic before working out whether or not they could fix his situation. For the insane buyout of es3tag.. the dude is a t2 player with his pretty much only experience being with Astralis.

Naturally the players still were heavily criticised but no where near as much as they would when been

This whole project felt poorly planned if We‘re honest, as if nobody talked to eachother Kassad leaving quickly because of indifferences with Alex, w0xic leaving apparently for the same reasons he left Mousesports, bringing in a rifler to replace him and let your best player AWP... On top of that Henry built an immense amount of pressure on his squad with unrealistic tweets. From the start they revealed Alex's 1650 000 contract, estag's 1+mln transfer, they called themselves colossus, so no, i am not agree, they positioned themselves as a powerful team under the famous tag, which again breaks into the elite. And only because of famous tag they had invites to some big tournaments and went fast to top 30 or 40, even here they had a little advantage on start. Then there were replacements in roster and changing roles, lack of bootcamp and other problems, Henry was in charge of this. Who to ask if not from him? With all this, after the match with Navi on the epl (2-1 with good resistance), I myself noted the progress of the c9 team. So I'm not saying that they were completely hopeless bottom, but in terms of the ratio results/funds spent, this is a failure, whatever you look at it.
2021-04-06 09:47

yeah I think the buyouts weren't worth it I agree with that. Considering now with all of the free agents like flusha, guardian etc maybe a team of free agents would have done better but it doesnt change the fact it wasnt suppose to be great from the start. Again Henry isnt really to blame. Woxic was a massive gamble that didnt pay off at all.

i think that henryg will try to take GM job in another org tho. from what i understand(not sure if itr true tho) he doesnt want to be caster anymore...we will see

I think it's fair to assume that any other esports organisation would be hesitant to hire HenryG after lackluster results as a GM for Cloud9. At least as a caster, HenryG won awards and was recognised for his contributions to the scene, even as an analyst akin to SPUNJ maybe.
2021-04-06 10:45
"Colossus" might not have bore fruit as a conceptualisation but I'm glad you enjoyed the opportunity, HenryG. :) I hope you come back to casting! Wish you all the best.

Sadly i don't really think that's going to happen. I remember hearing on Richard Lewis' stream that he really hates online casting and was burnt out from before. I'm sure you can find in segment if you want to see what he said word for word, its in his latest VOD somewhere after the Cloud9 bit. But even if he was to return to casting i don't think it would be in csgo. He's probably going to reunite with sadokist in valorant after how our community has treated him.

So he: -snatched a big pot of free money -destroyed c9 -inflated player salaries, degraded the pro scene at already a difficult time -and now jumped off to chill in a "sabbatical" waiting for a next opportunity to strike a soft spot and prey on the e-sport???? I hope this smug kook will never again be allowed to any position in CS.

mmh ... he snatched money but he did not cancel the project, he was deeply invested in it. player salaries were very high already and guess asstralis and co are getting equal or more? what does that have to do with him? His move was to make the pro contracts more transparent. jumping off now is understandably as he was invested into the project cs.

Look at the difference between astralis and c9 that's why astralis doesn't matter what wages are it's worth it with that they have won and winning

I'd say the salaries of Astralis are very much earned over the time. This kind of speculative hustling what HenryG was practicing is what ruin things in every sector of human life. This kind of "investing into power profits" -mentality instead of hard and patient work.

Who? Well, that was expected since the beginning of this lame project lead by this guy, he expected to bring 5-star players and win Major or what? The whole project was bad at the start, you didn't pick a guy who can be hungry for the W's, but you bring washed up players who care only about paychecks, and on top of that you bring Alex and Woxic??? Hope they took some notes of never ever give a chance to a caster to create something...Unbelievable and those salaries to those ppl OMG, only es3tag deserved to be paid there no one else. Same with mOOOSES if you can see this guy is a Manager there, a spokeman, he's not a coach, he didn't say anything during all of the matches Liquid played, as you can see on pauses there is no single adjustments from him, so he don't have balls or power to interupt Stewie or Fallen, it's just not his place there.
2021-04-06 14:23
1 reply
well, the main reason liquid brought in moses is to fix some of the issues on the team player wise, a team that had Elige, Stewie, Twistzz, even naf to some extent has a lot of players with strong personalities and can be hard to manage. They didnt exactly bring him for his tactical expertise, but then again I'm sure he is not completely clueless when it comes to that and helps fallen aswell.
2021-04-06 16:01
I like HenryG, He is a great caster but He proved that He can't build a team. We can agree that He didn't have the best luck but still He had a lot of money and He built a tier 2-3 team. It is true that they showed massive improvements in the last tournament but at the same time they kept losing to absolute nobodies tier 4 teams. They had quite some time and they didn't prove anything. You won't get a second chance at making a team Henry, that's for sure buddy. Go back to casting, that's your thing.

Sad. The team was honnestly not all that bad, but by talking all that big game and revealing the numbers, fans really did put some unreal expectations on this C9 lineup, and henry was always one of the first to receive backlash.
2021-04-06 15:51
Should have taken flusha as an IGL intead of Alex who was actually boosted by Zywoo all the time in Vitality. But we all have to agree that c9 is the worst org to play for.

Yeah, flusha igl and this team would have actually been in the mix. Alex is one of the most overrated players ever. Even now after all this, people are still hyping him up hahahaha. Yeah when C9 gets rid of their current team and then cancels their contracts blaming covid infractions, it shouldn't be a surprise for the current roster to be ditched in a similar fashion. It's like hooking up with a girl who has a boyfriend and then starting a relationship with her after they break up. Don't be surprised when she starts cheating on you in a few months.

So deserved, he had so many chances to make something beautiful, enough money, enough support and it just completetly flopped. I think many of the hltv users could have made a better team and made it work better together. For example why didnt they just organize a bootcamp? like tf it isnt that hard.

He actually succeeded - everyone now talks about how big of a blunder C9 was instead of focusing on the fact he is a rapist :)

c9 should have just remained inert. do nothing. wait. keep them playing. it was just a matter of time they would have stablished themselfs in the scene. smh. we need more teams from NA not less...

what a scam.. hahah.... can we all agree that we need to stop trusting caster and analyst to build and coach a team... let players (current or ex) make and coach teams, only they understand players mentality...

Just look at most sports, players can become coaches or casters but I’ve never seen a caster without experience become a pro coach.

Welp. That was a MASSIVE fail. I hope this was a lesson for you, HenryG: never try anything, ever. You'll only fail and look like a fucking idiot.

Some harsh comments here, goodness me! But I guess it's expected. As pointed out by numerous HLTV users, this team didn't have 1% chance of become better without the ability to bootcamp. They were just thrown together into the mixer in the hope that they'll achieve something for the C9 organization. I wouldn't really blame HenryG for the failure, but hard lessons were learned by him and Cloud 9. I wish the best of luck for HenryG in the future and hope to see him back at the casting desk once more. Besides Anders, Machine and SPUNJ, he's the only other caster I like listening to when watching CSGO.
2021-04-07 23:51
I said it with Ynk and with HenryG right after they were signed by their respectable organizations. ANALYSTS AND ESPECIALLY CASTERS HAVE NOTHING TO DO IN THE PRO SCENE other than casting. You also dont see TV moderators go and become trainer or manager of the football team lmao. Yes it can happen other way around from pro scene (couch, manager, player) to talent (analyst, caster) since those people know what they are doing.
