Heroic beat Gambit in marathon final to win ESL Pro League Season 13

The Danes came back from two big deficits en route to victory in the seven hours long best-of-five series.

Heroic have clinched the ESL Pro League Season 13 title following a back-and-forth marathon grand final series against Gambit. The Danish powerhouse managed to maintain their composure despite slow starts on the first three maps, winning Inferno and Train in overtime affairs and locking down the series 3-2 with a whitewash performance on the deciding Mirage.

Along with securing the $200,000 grand prize, the Casper "cadiaN" Møller-led squad have earned their first notch in the Intel Grand Slam Season 3 race, all the while denying Gambit a chance to win their second consecutive event counting towards the prestigious $1,000,000 prize.

"That was such a long game, so intense, it was five maps and one of them was with four overtimes, basically counting for two," cadiaN said in the post-match interview, still looking and sounding elated and filled with adrenaline moments after he clinched the last round for his team with a ridiculous 1v4 clutch. "They gave us a run for their money, Gambit played so well, they're probably considered the best team by everyone, this is our first tournament and we did it. I feel like that's part of CS history by now."

cadiaN led by example as he put up a 1.14 rating and secured the series with a stylish 1v4 clutch

Although it didn't look like Heroic would be able to match up to the favored Gambit side at first, the Danes managed to kick off the marathon series with a win on their first pick, Inferno. The victor was not found in regulation after the two teams exchanged one-sided defensive halves, with cadiaN's side coming back from a 4-12 deficit to force overtime, where he and his team came out on top by a hair's breadth thanks to a couple of key plays from Martin "stavn" Lund.

Gambit didn't let the massive turnaround on the opener rattle them and put on a stellar showing on Vertigo. The Russian side tore Heroic's defense apart after the first few gunrounds went the Danes' way, and this time they didn't let their opponents find any breathing room, closing the map without breaking a sweat at 16-3.

Train turned out to be a crazy affair that was only resolved after four sets of overtimes. Gambit got off on the right foot again with a convincing defense but then couldn't convert a 12-6 lead on the Terrorist side, with cadiaN finding key plays with the AWP over the course of the second half to take the map to its first overtime. Heroic then began to turn up the pace after a slow regulation, and a few chaotic overtimes later they conserved utility for their opponents' late executes to put a nail in the third map after 54 rounds, when Gambit's composure finally started to fade.

Gambit could not convert big leads on Inferno and Train

Heroic entered Overpass on series point looking to end the best-of-five in four maps, but they found themselves hard-pressed by Gambit, who managed to stay hot on their heels in a back-and-forth map. The momentum only turned at 9-10, when Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov & co. seized control on the CT side with the in-game leader topping the charts and making important plays to pick up seven in a row and take the series to its fifth map.

After difficult starts on the first three maps and a close affair on the fourth, Heroic found some momentum at the beginning of Mirage and never let it go. Looking just as focused as always despite the series running past its sixth hour, the Danes shut down Gambit on the CT side and didn't take long to finish things off after sides switched, with cadiaN putting the final nail in their opponents' coffin with style, winning a 1v4 clutch featuring a knife kill moments before his team burst out of their chairs in celebration.

Who else would be number one? No one else in the top 20 has a claim to it besides Heroic, and this match was way too close to use to put Heroic #1 over Gambit, especially given this is the only tournament this lineup has played other than a the dreamhack qualifier.

It was all of that, except pressure. 1v4 with pistol, your team is on a roll and has nine match-points ahead. No pressure to win, ideal environment to style on mfkers. To be bold and annoying and get in their head for next rounds.

Cadian with the best clutch I have ever seen in CS history. I could not believe what I was seeing. Valve need to add a Graffiti for that

GG, happy for CadiaN, well played and deserved win. Gambit had a lot of chances to take another map on Inferno and Train but couldn't capitalize, good resilience from Heroic to come out on top on both maps.

very good job gambit academy

WP Heroic, i was sure this was gonna be a 3-0 from Gambit, they've been insanely dominant recently...That clutch from CadiaN was beautiful, i'd say it could be up for the best one of this online era. I don't know about what this means for Gambit and Heroic in terms of world positioning, if Heroic keep up like this we're gonna see many more Gambit VS Heroic finals

Experience won this. Congrats Cadian (I'm surprised he's listed as 25 on hltv, he's been 25 for like three years). Now Gambit. When I see Gambit, in some ways I see the opposite of what Virtus.Pro with NEO and TaZ used to be five or so years ago: resilience and ability to get round wins out of scraps, by unlikely teamwork and getting into the mind of their opponent; by extreme awareness and mental pressure on their opponents. Similarly, I see the opposite of what fnatic was with olof, KrimZ, JW, flusha, pronax: getting tournament wins out of amazing mid-round and end-round game. Feeling impossible to play at times due to their balance of fundamentals, mind-game and fuckery. When I see Gambit I see a team that is young. A team that practices hard. A team that relies a lot on their playbook and form, but struggles with finding alternatives or unlikely decisions, or being decisive in reading exactly what their opponents are doing. A team that is not the best in utilising tactical timeouts and adapting. If CSGO stays alive in 3-5 years, and if those players keep evolving themselves and compete, this team and those players obviously have a bright future. They are gaining the experience now, which their peers will be unable to have. But right now they sometimes (way more than a top-1 team should) feel out of their depth in high stakes, high pressure situations and unusual circumstances, when they aren't able to roll the experienced opponent over... Which is OK when your team average age is around 20. Look at Astralis when they used to be dignitas. Gambit are where they should be. A team that is capable of winning tier-1 tournaments, but mostly "on their terms". That's the vibe I get. Correct me if I'm way off! Why I wrote this? Cheered for Gambit. Was disappointed . But then realised, why the fuck am I disappointed? Guys are like 18-19 years old. They've made immense progress in a year. They are on a bonkers trajectory. The inconsistency in high stake tier-1 matches was inevitable, and overcoming it is a process of building experience, knowledge , awareness, evolving as a team, etcetera. Astralis had to find glaive and insert Magisk to become Astralis. Gl boys!

Heroic is actually looking good, when cadiaN will know how to use those new players better I think this team can be one of the best in the world. Gambit still seem to lack experience on the highest level under huge pressure, and it's kinda understandable, it should come with time, and then they can easily be one of the best teams in history.

Yeah I think so. I think they can win a lot of trophies if cadiaN will know how to use those players properly, better than he did on EPL.

Amazing final. Exactly what we want tot see. GG both teams... i was sure Gambit should take it , but seems Heroic had the stronger mentality!
2021-04-12 05:59
Epic shit, wow! Crazy to think that some ppl can play 7hours of CS and still be focused. Esports is a real sport for sure! Grats to Heroic.
2021-04-12 06:40
Only thing is, i've seen this in the past. Some people hype some teams up as the next biggest thing since sliced cheese - and said team disbands or dont last 3 weeks at the top. So it boils down to this - how long can these teams last at the top of the mountain? Either way, it was an amazing matchup to watch!! GGs to both teams!
2021-04-12 08:46
Sad to see gambit lose tbh. This one's gonna sting very hard. Heroic seem like good dudes but would have preferred to see Gambit take it. Hopefully they can learn from it.

That was a good game. Though I'd be lying if I said I was expecting this outcome.
2021-04-12 12:12
Anyone calling gambit bots, 2 of the maps won by Heroic were in overtime, 2 of the maps won by gambit were in regulation (one is that absolute 16-3 stomp in Vertigo btw), gambit's kdr is overall higher than heroic as well. Calling this a convincing win by heroic is dumb, this was way way too clutch of a win to really take any definitive conclusions out of the whole series. With just a slight difference this could have easily been 3-0 or 3-1 for Gambit. That said the winners ALWAYS deserve the win, ggwp.
2021-04-12 12:51
Ive always said it back in the days since the days cadiaN was playing in NA that he was a smart igl as well as knew how to hit the awp shots, but ppl realy underrated him and mainly that came from some old stories that he was immature because they saw some sort of a video of him clowning around, but the guy made it through to the top in the end, great match by both teams, but the team that was mentaly stronger and less drained out after 4 prevous maps deseved to win the event!
