Comment: What now for Astralis?

After Nicolai "device" Reedtz slammed the door behind him, the question remains whether the team can still turn the ship around.

You could see the writing on the wall. Beyond the results, the disjointed performances and the late-game struggles, there were other, more subtle signs which indicated that all was not well in the Astralis camp. Smiles had been replaced by frowns, the team didn’t really look comfortable on any map, and even coach Danny "zonic" Sørensen seemed unsure of what to do to stop the bleeding. Before, Astralis were always in it, no matter how ugly things got. But now, that intensity and, more importantly, that strong sense of belief just weren’t there. Could this be it for the most dominant team in Counter-Strike history?

device's explosive interview in the lead-up to the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown only confirmed that the team's issues ran deep and that the solid foundation upon which Astralis' success had been built was shattered. Less than two weeks later, he left for Ninjas in Pyjamas in one of the biggest and most shocking transfers in all of esports, waving goodbye to the team he had inspired to greatness and to his longtime teammates Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen and Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth.

dupreeh is expected to pick up the AWP - but for how long?

The notion that device chose comfort over performance with this move was dismissed by the player himself in a press conference on Friday afternoon. "I think that's a bit misleading," he said. "Reducing stress doesn't reduce workload. Doing this allows me to push myself more towards the limit. A better life for me is a life with trophies, and I'm pretty sure we're going to achieve that." At 25 years old, he knows that he has only a few more years of peak performance ahead of him. He wants to prove, if only to himself, that he can lead a new group of players to glory as he looks to cement his place among the game’s all-time greats.

But where do Astralis go from here? The departure of "Mr. Consistent" is an immeasurable blow, not just to an already struggling team, but also to Astralis as a brand, with the company’s stock price dropping nearly 6 percent on Friday — a worrying sign considering that in 2020 alone it posted losses of $8.5 million. That cash inflow — rumoured to be around $1 million — is greatly needed, but what good is it when you need to replace a star marquee and every organisation with which you can conduct business knows that you have money to spend?

In the current AWP-oriented meta, it is almost imperative to have a stable AWPer who can open up space for teammates and hold bombsites almost single-handedly. And those who have tried to buck that trend, either by sticking to unreliable AWPers or adopting a Band-Aid approach with hybrid players — I’m looking at you, G2 —, have struggled. Even Ninjas in Pyjamas knew that their chances of becoming an elite side with a player like Tim "nawwk" Jonasson, who continues to blow hot and cold, were slim. They just didn’t expect that the opportunity to sign a player of device’s caliber would magically fall in their laps.

It’s hard to see Astralis looking past Patrick "es3tag" Hansen, the final remnant of Cloud9’s failed ‘Colossus’ project. The 25-year-old played some of the best Counter-Strike of his career during his brief tenure with the Danish team last year, but he’s not really a one-for-one replacement for device. He looked out of his depth as Cloud9's main AWPer in ESL Pro League, posting a 0.89 Impact and averaging only 0.26 AWP kills per round. dupreeh is a capable secondary AWPer, but he doesn’t have the playmaking ability of device. In 2018, after being the team’s main AWPer for a few months due to his teammate’s health issues, he reverted to his old role in the aftermath of the ELEAGUE Major disaster.

In the Danish scene, only one name really stands out and it is that of Casper "cadiaN" Møller, a player at the height of his career and who has plenty of captaincy experience. But with Heroic currently miles ahead of Astralis and in a battle with Gambit for the No.1 spot in the world, there simply isn't any reason for the 25-year-old to leave a more stable and younger project, one that is now part of Omaken Sports' plan to build "a Nordic powerhouse within global esports."

Some of the other options, such as Daniel "mertz" Mertz and Jakob "JUGi" Hansen, have struggled in the past with reliability issues at a top level, while players like Asger "Farlig" Jensen and Frederik "acoR" Gyldstrand haven’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard for their respective teams. And Astralis cannot afford to gamble on a young Danish player hoping that he will turn out to be good enough to play against the best teams in the world. If you're Astralis, you are expected to contend now, to win now. It’s entirely possible that the organisation will look abroad for a suitable player — the CIS scene with its vast talent pool would be the perfect place to start —, but even that carries an element of risk as it would force the team to revamp its structure and communication system.

Even if Astralis do manage to find a world-class AWPer, there’s still a myriad of issues left to resolve. At this point, it seems almost inevitable that at least one more player will have to step down for the team to find some stability. Xyp9x has looked out of sorts since the start of the year, and Emil "Magisk" Reif, who took over in-game leadership duties last year, is also going through the worst slump of his career. Lucas "Bubzkji" Andersen will once again be thrown in at the deep end after barely seeing any action in the first months of the year. And questions remain about Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander’s long-term availability as his son is due to be born in approximately five months, merely weeks before PGL Major Stockholm. These are challenging times for the Danish tactician, who will have to reinvent his team and prove that he can find success with a different formula.

This will be the biggest test ever for the Astralis organisation, which hit the jackpot with Magisk in 2018 after being blindsided by Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye in the aftermath of ELEAGUE Major Boston. They have to start the rebuilding process while trying to retain the team’s core pieces, whose contracts are rumoured to be expiring at the end of the year.

Astralis let go of the one player that they simply could not afford to lose, the one that had bailed them out of tricky situations countless times and been a model of consistency, most likely due to financial pressure. But what’s the hidden cost of letting your most influential and hardest-to-replace player leave? It may be a long time before we see this Danish team back at the top as they risk sliding out of relevancy. Yes, Astralis have bounced back from difficult situations in the past, but this might be too big a challenge, even for them.

1. RUSH is doing a good job on Complexity, he is not the stat hunter of the team, he is like SANJI 2. jks is showing some improvement I believe that rosters should stick for a bit so they could break in and fit together. 3. true mousesports needs some changes so not disagreeing with that, just don't think astralis players would do this. 4. this new astralis is garbage, es3tag wants to play awp, mertz is an awper, farlig is an awper, bubzjki is not good enough for astralis but i guess he would fit in this team, and MSL is looking for a good team

Yeah true this was the problem with Cloud9, HenryG had expansive dreams for the team but the org was upset on the results, gotta give a team, especially a mixed roster like that, time to settle in and become a team instead of individual performances

You only see stats. Look at the reasons: he had high ping and couldn't make it to practice. So how can they wait if they are practicing so low amount of time. With their prac that would take years to fit in

I think people look past him because of his stint with astralis last year which was pretty bad. But tbh he did not have enough time on that roster without his favorite roles so it is imo pretty unfair to judge his career of off his stint there. Would love to see him in a solid team Edit: I believe he also had the stint with CoL afterwards.

JKS is a great player and as mentioned it takes time to make a good team, that's why teams that switch their players as often as they eat lunch almost always flop. JKS just needs some time before you can really lay all the judgement.

I'm talking about currently, you can't deny that he has been playing poorly. Yes I acknowledge that he has won four majors. But that doesn't necessarily negate the fact that in 2020 and 2021 his performances have been sub par. The majors don't matter in the context that I'm referring to, the same way in which people believe that the old mibr core are terrible despite winning 2 successive majors.

AcoR is the only move that makes sense. First we gotta see who's Awping now. Dupreeh is a decent awper but it's a NiKo situation with him. You're taking away a good rifler to be your awper.

Yeah, I hope he doesn't transition into becoming a main AWP'er but I think glaive knows that it's better to keep dupreeh on the rifle and wait till you find a decent player in the awping role.

Spot on! CSGO pro scene and teams are better today thanks in part to gla1ve. Look at how well so many teams play nuke today, thanks to gla1ve's playbook. He may need fresh blood or different talent to develop different strats, but he is a living legend who can still deliver on so many levels. He has worse stats because he has to be more aggressive to get info on the other team as Astralis as a whole is more vulnerable. If he decides to retire, I'd only replace him with CadiaN, who probably likes it too much at Heroic and wouldn't move anyway.

hard to find a world class awper rn. Maybe just release the roster and start all over again? I honestly don't think any of the viable options of Astralis can bring the team back to the peak. Time flies, and players are no longer young.

nice read. i'm pretty sure gla1ve and xyp will be replaced as well. xyp isnt performing great and gla1ve might wanna take a step back for the time being for his family. now is a perfect moment for that. i'm thinking astralis will field es3tag / bubzkji / dupreeh / magisk / ?? and i also think astralis might want to try to get blameF or cadian as IGL

Astralis organisation reported a loss of 8.3 million dollars In 2020. Even with the sale of device they are still bleeding and with the current management only focusing on money odds are they arent gonna go for someone expensive and will opt out for someone cheap.

Agree. Cadian has literally no reason to move right now. Heroic are always at the deep end of the tournament so why leave? As for blame, CoL are looking decent, but poizon is the one that's struggling over there right now I think xyp and glaive are finished. May as well end on a high note and bow out now instead of becoming a pronax and losing relevance as the years tick on.

Not to mention, he loves RUSH; there is no way that he is just going to leave coL without RUSH and even k0nfig. It's kinda sad that alotta people are just "bUt sTaTs!" when players like RUSH and amaNEK are one of the most important players in their teams to make plays happen.

Es3tag and bubzki to step in, xyp is not having good performances lately and I feel like their problem is that they are lacking firepower. If players start working on their individual level, Astralis can bounce back, otherwise, more drastic changes will be needed

It's a very grim situation indeed, one where they seem to be deep in troubling waters. I think with Device's departure, they should take another step ahead and cut one or two more of their players and start afresh. Nobody stays on the top forever, this was inevitable and had to happen when their dynasty falls Either grab the best Danish exports at the moment cause Heroic is surely miles better than then, or bank inn unproven T2 local guys like Lucky from Tricked for awp duties. I am afraid to say this but I have serious doubt if Astralis are ever gonna recover from this and would ever be a Top 5 team again. Device was no doubt the best player after both superhuman we are aware of.

Same feeling I have, the veterans can't compete with players from other top 5 teams anymore. I doubt that Astralis is able to buy out a consolidated T1 player, as they have been in financial turmoil for quite a bit, and probably will have to look into some T2 players. The thing is, the Danish scene is not as good as it was, there is no Fragsters or such team full of young promising players, they will have to take risks and I'm afraid they will not be able to bounce back

Yea it kinda changed pretty quickly that Danish team a little less than a year ago was booming with talent and such but now there aren't many T2ers that T1 orgs would be going for. Their best bet is to get someone from Tricked or Copenhagen Flames.

Astralis doesn't seem as much invested in CS as other top teams. This is a true testament for rest of the core to prove that they still got it. If the riflers can show up for astralis (bubzkji, dupreeh & magisk is a powerful trio) then they wouldn't need an awper as proficient as dev1ce. Many teams now don't rely on their awper as much based solely off of the riflers (For ex: CoL don't rely on poizon to carry the team)

I think that this will be a driving force behind these players motivation, and if they start working on their individual level, with that trio and perhaps es3tag replacing xyp, Astralis may be a strong team again. However, the role of device was very important and I feel like he is going to be very hard to replace

Awesome article! Great take on the situation and possible solutions. As things are, it seems reasonable to expect Astralis to look for an AWPer, as well as replacements for Xyp9x and possibly gla1ve. Some possibilities might be: Replacements for device: - Farlig: Great Danish Awper who's been great even against t1 teams. More agressive than device, which will require a bit of adjustment, but keeping comms Danish will undoubtedly make the integration easier. Needs a buyout from FPX, if they are willing to sell him. - Oskar: If they could buy him out from Sinners, he is probably one of the awpers with the closest style to that of device. Also proven to be consistent in multiple rosters and has played international before. Probably easier than many others to integrate into the Astralis-system. - KennyS: Solid awper when in form, but definitely more agressive and less consistent than device. Would require a complete revamp of strats and comms. - xsepower: A lot like Kenny, but faced huge consistency-issues at the end of his time in forZe. Would require the same changes. - JUGi/Lucky/acoR: All good, danish AWPers, but strongly doubt any of them would make for a solid replacement. Lucky and acoR also require a buyout, which does not seem worthwhile. Probably more good options, but these were the ones I could think of. Replacements for Xyp9x: - es3tag: Honestly the only logical acquisition at this point in time. No need for explanation. Replacements for gla1ve: - MSL: Good danish IGL who is without a team at the moment. Not the best proven fragging ability, but good strats overall. - Valde: If able to be bought out from OG he did alright as the IGL of North and is a proven fragger. - BlameF: If he could be bought out of Col and would want to make the transition, he would undoubtedly be the best choice. Great stats and fragging-capability all around. Doubt he or his org will be interested in the transfer however. Could also consider getting Magisk to IGL again if they find a good rifler, but I dont think it's the optimal solution.

1. He doesn't speak Danish 2. His buyout will be exorbitant and destroy NaVi in the process. NaVi is s1mple,
2021-04-26 15:48
I love how they count mertz out while he had one test with MSL and failed because of attitudes & work ethic. One can only imagine how crushed he was after they booted him since he was like 18 ? He probably was too full of himself and didn't think they would kick him. But guess what, being talented doesn't allow you to be a stubborn dickhead. I'm sure he learned his lesson and he is still an amazing awper. They gambled on Magisk who was also hot-headed back then so why not ? He's not device but can be mold to be, gla1ve always got the best out of his teammates as far as I can remember.

RIP GOAT TEAM
2021-04-26 15:34
To save their legacy they must disband. No ifs, ands, or buts. No one expects anything from the team other than GOAT and without devve it's currently an unattainable goal. And it's not like devve's departure is the only problem: Magisk, gla1ve and Xyp9x clearly lack motivation which leaves us only with dupreeh and an unknown quantity of Bubzkji. Dupreeh surely can find a better home (as an entry fragger he's on the same level as Elige), and others could just retire. A very nice editorial/article indeed.
2021-04-26 15:46
I think it would make sense for astralis to drop this roster and buy a new one.Maybe even not going for a danish one,but if they were to do that, maybe they should build it around dupreeh and since gla1ve is most likely retiring,a strong igl like MSL should do the job.Get 2 danish fpl prodigies that have a lot of potential and a talented awper like farlig, and hope they will perform, and if they don t,well, they re pretty much fucked

2021-04-26 20:09
In 2018, Magisk came to the right place at the right time. Now, can he save his 'right space' that's at their wrong time?
2021-04-26 21:22
Well I think they need more changes now that device left. I think the core of gla1ve, Xyp9x and dupreeh can still be on the top, but Magisk has been struggling a lot, and honestly I would change him aswell. I think there is still a way in which this core comebacks to being the no.1, but I don't see them doing it with this 4 players, something more has got to change.

only if he breaks up with his golddigger gf who is hanging with albanian rappers in her free time, so pretty likely though I feel that device has a cucky side to him so maybe he is into that.

all good things in life must come to an end. people die, people move on, people find new jobs etc etc and this is no different astralis making a comeback is doubtful. if anything they should take a break, reevaluate things.

2021-04-27 12:33
Ropz and estag to astralis - xyp sorry th clutch era is over. Then hopefully glave can manage being a father and playing this game. As a young father id advise to let the mother and family do most of the upbringing at least the 1st year. Is mostly incompatitible period for males. Females are best at the first year. So try not to stress it and let go. Then big daddy zonic can put up his leading coach magical powder over the team once again. It can work out but some stuff needs to be done.
2021-04-27 13:41
Zywoo best 1 for 1 device replacement,. Or perhaps KennyS

They're finally forced to integrate Bubzkji more. Feel like he was wasting his talent only sitting on the sidelines.
2021-04-28 18:54
actually farlig or any young awper like mertz or even MSL (not sure with that lol) would fit with a few months of experiment, what do you think guys?

Gla1ve main scout confirmed
2021-04-29 18:18
They might not win today's major or 2021 tournaments but they would win a major if the team don't release another player. Dupreeh could improve as an awper because his flicks aren't really legendary but I'd say the team is maybe on a state of learning how other team plays and that's why people were surprised about Starladder major despite the fact that Astralis became very bad.
2021-04-29 21:49
My Opinion: Astralis -Xyp9x +Es3tag +Stavn Gla1ve Dupreeh Magisk Stavn Es3tag Heroic: -Stavn +Jugi Cadian Teses Jugi Sjuush Refrezh 2awper like Immortals do on tha past and result.
2021-04-30 07:03
