Flashpoint 3 initial matchups announced

The double-elimination bracket for the first European RMR event of 2021 has been drawn.

Flashpoint has announced the initial matchups for the 16-team European Regional Major Ranking (RMR) event, which will take place on May 10-30. The tournament will be played out using a double-elimination format and give out valuable RMR points that will qualify teams for the PGL Stockholm Major.

In the first round of play, Vitality will take on countrymen DBL PONEY — without Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt who is uneligable to compete —, while Astralis will play a rematch against OG, who eliminated them from the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown in April.

An all-French matchup between Vitality and DBL PONEY starts the event

mousesports, winners of the closed qualifier, will kick off the event against a struggling fnatic, while closed qualifier runners-up Complexity will take on BIG. G2 and FaZe facing off is certain to attract a lot of attention, as is Nicolai "device" Reedtz's debut for NIP against Anonymo. Last but not least, FunPlus Phoenix will take on ex-North.

It is unclear which lineup will show up on the server for ex-North on May 14th, but the roster submitted by the Danish squad was deemed valid by Flashpoint, which means that it has at least three players from the North lineup that played in DreamHack Open Fall 2020. Two of those players, Philip "aizy" Aistrup and Nicklas "gade" Gade, have reunited under the name HYENAS in March, with their only tournament played being the second open qualifier for IEM Summer, where they were knocked out by MAD Lions in the Round of 32.

The opening matchups for Flashpoint 3 are as follows:

France Vitality vs. France DBL PONEY
Denmark Astralis vs. Europe OG
Germany BIG vs. Europe Complexity
Sweden fnatic vs. Europe mousesports
Denmark Heroic vs. Germany Sprout
Europe G2 vs. Europe FaZe
Sweden NIP vs. Poland Anonymo
Europe FunPlus Phoenix vs. Denmark ex-North

Considering most of them are free agents and some players (e.g. Lekr0) already changed teams, I doubt they will play together in the future. But this is a free chance for a major spot so guess they'll take it. Probably their last ride together.

Val has basically rmr, but with global LANs (Masters) after every "Stage" (3x a year, except the first stage this year didn't have lans beacuse of covid, and a Major (Champions) at the end of the year you qualify for with regional points and through a last chance macro-regional qualifier. The main difference is that in most regions literally every team has to qualify through open qualifiers.

2021-05-01 12:25
"additional matches are for seeding" yeah yeah alright sure you gotta have something to hind behind when you make the same matchups that we're used to and want to see Astralis vs OG (interesting storylines rn) Vitality vs DBL (2 french teams) BIG vs coL (big rivalry between the two) G2 vs FaZe (NiKo and karrigan vs ex-team and this shit has been going on for half a year now) like if yu believe this has anything to do with seeding you're dumb, they just made the best possible matchups to get the most ammount of viewers

you've got to consider that this is not an actual Flashpoint as only 1 of their partner teams are participating, and also Gambit could've decided to join EU's RMR circuit instead of CIS', but they didn't, probably because if they suddenly became bad or something they would still easily qualify from CIS, which they most likely wouldn't manage to do in EU

Let's see how it affects their prizepool. Seems like Gambit is playing safe for the major spot. Can't blame them i guess.
