paiN edge past EG; Extra Salt beat EXTREMUM in cs_summit 8 openers
The opening victories assures both teams of spots in the playoffs.
paiN and Extra Salt have secured wins over Evil Geniuses and EXTREMUM in their respective groups to open the main event of cs_summit 8, booking spots in the winners' matches and ensuring they will, at the very least, advance to the lower bracket of the playoffs for the Regional Major Ranking tournament.
Vinicios "PKL" Coelho's troops set up a second Brazilian cs_summit derby with their victory as they will take on the winner of the match between FURIA and O PLANO, with Henrique "HEN1" Teles set to play against his former team for the first time. Extra Salt, meanwhile, face the prospect of a match against Liquid or Bad News Bears, while the losing teams from today's matches are left staring down the chance of an early elimination on Sunday.
paiN kicked off Nuke with an early lead, helmed by a strong showing from Rafael "saffee" Costa on the AWP. Evil Geniuses stabilized in the latter portion of their T side, edging out an 8-7 lead at the break, but paiN quickly got back in the driver's seat in the second half as they battered EG's defenses to close out the map in short order, 16-11.
The Brazilian roster maintained momentum as their own pick of Vertigo got underway, mustering a 6-3 scoreline on the attack; however, Evil Geniuses once again managed to claw back into the map, with Owen "oBo" Schlatter being the catalyst in closing the gap by halftime. The 17-year-old's solid performance continued into the second half, where was joined by Michał "MICHU" Müller and Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte in helping secure an early string of rounds before putting a halt to paiN's comeback effort to close the map.
The early portion of Inferno marked a stark departure from the narrow margins of the first two maps as paiN let loose on EG's CT side, running up eight rounds in a row to kick things off. Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov's AWPing was key in EG's effort to remain in contention, and a strong start to the second half seemed like a comeback could be in the cards for Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's men. Once paiN's economy stabilized and saffee had a sniper in his hands again, though, those hopes of a comeback were brought crashing down as paiN converted their early lead into a map win to take the series.
Extra Salt had an easier time of things against EXTREMUM, despite two closely contested maps. An early back-and-forth on Nuke saw the Oceanic roster emerge ahead, 7-2, but Johnny "JT" Theodosiou and company battled back to keep themselves within one round of Aaron "AZR" Ward's side at the half. Clean round wins following the side swap bolstered Extra Salt's CT economy, and that margin allowed them to keep the pressure on their opposition throughout the half, helping edge out a win in regulation.
Vertigo was an entirely different affair as Extra Salt put up a stalwart defense from the onset to claim a 10-1 lead. Although EXTREMUM began to fight back towards the end of the half and found their footing following the side swap, Extra Salt's early dominance was too large a margin to comeback from, and JT's side were able to close out the map 16-12 to take the series.
