Official: zews parts ways with Evil Geniuses; seeks new opportunities in CS:GO

The 33-year-old tactician remains dedicated to the game despite the departure from the American organization.

Wilton "zews" Prado's 14-month-long cooperation with Evil Geniuses has come to an end, the coach announced on Wednesday. The Brazilian steps down from the head coach position ahead of the start of IEM Summer 2021, where Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz and co. will compete without him.

The split between zews and the team happened by mutual consent over a difference of opinion regarding the team's direction, HLTV.org has learned, with the coach noting that he intends to stick to Counter-Strike moving forward.

zews is looking for a new project after parting ways with EG

"I love this game and have dedicated my life to it. This is not about to change anytime soon," zews said in a statement. "If you or your organization share my values and need a hungry and hardworking individual, don't be shy to send me a message. I want to hear from you."

zews' accomplishments with Evil Geniuses including climbing to the No. 1 spot in the world ranking in September of 2020 as they won three tournaments in a row during the online era: BLAST Premier Spring Americas Finals, cs_summit 6 NA, and ESL One Cologne NA.

The team started to show cracks soon after that, struggling in European competitions before losing two long-standing members in Ethan "Ethan" Arnold and Tarik "tarik" Celik. The additions of Owen "oBo" Schlatter and Michał "MICHU" Müller didn't help turn around the team's trajectory, as last-place exits from ESL Pro League S13, FunSpark ULTI 2020 Europe Final, and cs_summit 8 saw them crash out of the top 30 in the world for the first time.

"I saw our team reach #1 in the world and lift many trophies, while also facing painful losses," zews wrote in his statement, summing up the turbulent period. "Even though my time here was brief, these are memories that I will not forget."

zews noted that he is still on Evil Geniuses roster and "will be working alongside them to figure out the best next steps for my future in the near future".

Evil Geniuses are now:

Canada Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz
United States Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte
United States Owen "oBo" Schlatter
Bulgaria Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov

It's more of a long-term project, two of the newer players have almost 0 experience outside of SA/T2 NA, I think an experienced coach like zews could help a lot improving the 3 upcoming talents

Tbh from what I've seen, that team will never be an elite tournament winning team. They just don't have that kind of teamplay or firepower. Top 20-ish, sure, but I just can't see them any hogher than that.

adreN 0 majors zews 2 majors. adreN is a fucking bum dude, he got lucky that he was coach of a highly skilled team who caught fire at the right time, and their strongest opponent was taking it easier at the time. As soon as things became tough adreN literally had 0 new variations of their playbook.

"zews was a fucking bum dude, he got lucky that he was coach of a highly skilled team who caught fire at the right time" can also be said about his time in luminosity/sk gaming or EG.

You cannot compare zews record with adreN, zews has won 2 majors and countless tournaments with a team that skillwise was not the best. He also took an entirely different team to #1 in the hltv rankings 3 years later. adreN took a team which was one of the most skilled teams ever in CSGO, and won a few tournaments, and then fell off a cliff and never recovered.
2021-06-02 17:29
6 replies
Wait, you think SK wasn't a skilled team at the time? Because that's just not true. Also, while I don't entirely disagree about adreN vs Zews with Liquid, the biggest issue for Liquid has never been the coach. But also comparing SK winning 2 majors to Liquid winning none is false equivalence. SK won their majors before Astralis was the dominant team. Liquid with Zews didn't win any majors when Astralis was at their peak either, so the comparison is absolutely fucking moot.

he said they probably werent the strongest at that time, and he is not 100% wrong, just look at Faze roster in 2017.

Was SK winning majors in 2017? The only real weak link statistically, on SK, was TACO. They had 4 players in the Top 20 in 2016. To say they weren't skilled top to bottom is sort of silly.

Sk/LG were a skilled team, but not top to bottom like 2019 Liquid. When NAF is your third best player you have an insane team. SK were successful primarily through great team work.
2021-06-03 03:21
1 reply
SK/LG, in 2016, had 4 of their 5 players in the Top 20. Hell, in 2017 they had 3 of their 5 players in the Top 20 (1, 3 and 6). Do you know how many players Liquid had in the Top 20 in 2019? 3. nitr0 and Stewie2K were decent, but not earth shattering (neither have ever been in a Top 20, whereas Cold, FalleN and fer have all been placed higher than NAF, Twistzz and EliGE in back-to-back years). In fact, in 2019, Liquid's players were actually ranked lower than SK's in 2017, despite having more overall success (4, 7, and 9). Every top team is successful through both skill and teamwork. Some more than others, but the only team to have more players in the Top20 in a year than SK/LG was Astralis (with literally all of them). I'm getting sort of off into the weeds, but the fact remains: your criticism of adreN is equally applicable to Zews, as neither have guided Liquid to a major. SK/LG won 2 majors 5 years ago, to say that's more of an accomplishment than, say, the Grand Slam is sort of pointless, because both coaches had the opportunity to push the team to greatness, and only one of them mostly succeeded.

IDK about a massive upgrade but this move does make sense. Apparently zews was the only coach that lasted for a while with fallen so this move would benefit fallen and the team. Adren was never the energetic one so having someone like zews when the team is shutting down could be an upgrade. And we still have adren as the tactical mastermind.

If all players have good rating they can establish an era. Look at prime SK, Astralis, current Gambit. Konstantin Pikiner is good example of great coach. He taught Gambit guys how to frag and made five mad fraggers from mediocre players. Now you can see how Gambit is rekting everyone =)

lmao dude players usually get signed to teams BECAUSE of their ability to frag, the coach job is to come up with new strats, watch replays, analize teams that his team is goin to play against and find their weakness and stuff that they usually like to do.

I really think the "difference of opinion" here is about -stan. Really possible that he wanted Stan out and someone on the org didn't. And we don't know exactly how much of the recent performances lays down on zews or Stan. But the fact is the mid round calls and the performance on the servers by Stan were shit on recent times

Yes, but a coaching job is not defined by what he provides on the server, pretty opposite. His job is to watch demos, work strats and anti strats, study adversaries tendencies and etc. working with the IGL to provide information for better decision making, and that's why we can't be sure what was stan's fault and what was zews's fault. Coaches being a second IGL on the server is an online era thing.

From his interviews, he always looked to be a big advocate of Stanislaw and held his IGLing in high regards. Perhaps the org pushed for replacing Stan but he didn't want to agree with it so he left?
