ESIC forwards evidence to Valve related to potential betting fraud in Project X, Akuma matches

The esports watchdog revealed that the Project X CEO bet on matches played by his team, as well as a CIS RMR game the same core of players competed in under the Akuma tag.

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) have received evidence that Oleksandr Shyshko, the CEO of Project X, has an active CS:GO betting account and has placed "numerous bets on highly suspicious Project X matches". The betting took place at a time when most of the current Akuma roster was playing under the Project X organization, which disbanded and ceased operations in March.

ESIC adds that Shyshko also made an accurate pre-match bet on the outcome of Virtus.pro - Akuma in EPIC League CIS 2021, a game at the center of cheating allegations aimed at the team led by Sergey "Sergiz" Atamanchuk. ESIC has forwarded the evidence received to Valve, and recommends ESIC-member Tournament Organizers to not include Akuma, a team made up of more than three current Akuma members, or any team associated with Oleksandr Shyshko in their competitions until an investigation is concluded.

ESIC forwarded evidence of potential betting fraud to Valve

The evidence was acquired through the Suspicious Betting Alert Network (SBAN), with ESIC determining that there was a "reasonable basis to believe that potential match-fixing and/or betting fraud behaviour was perpetrated". As the tournaments in which the actions happened are not ESIC members, ESIC referred the matter to Valve for consideration.

"While ESIC has not undertaken a full investigation into the detail, extent, and validity of any particular instances of match-fixing behaviour and the perpetrators of such behaviour – information on hand would indicate that this is a matter worth investigating further," the commissioner of ESIC, Ian Smith, explained in a statement.

"If ESIC did have jurisdiction, we would have opened a full investigation based on what we already know. ESIC has therefore referred the evidence available to us to Valve for further consideration," Smith adds.

In the announcement, ESIC clarifies that it has "not sanctioned, nor does it currently plan to sanction any individual associated with its referral," as they do not have the authority to conduct a full investigation. Unless otherwise instructed by Valve, their actions will be limited to "the referral of evidence, recommendations to members, and this statement".

Akuma, an orgless, all-Ukrainian squad featuring AWPer Dmitriy "SENSEi" Shvorak, came into the spotlight in May. At the first CIS Regional Major Ranking (RMR) event of 2021, as the 12th highest seed at the tournament, Akuma made it to the playoffs and secured 2-0 victories over Natus Vincere and Virtus.pro, placing third overall. Shortly after, clips from the tournament broadcast started to surface, pointing out suspicious eye movement and suggesting that players are gaining info from a second device.

Notable CIS players and community members, including Natus Vincere coach Andrey "B1ad3" Gorodenskiy, soon made their accusations public, after which fourteen of the sixteen teams that participated in EPIC League CIS released an open letter calling on Valve to investigate Akuma. The group suspects that the team "received live [match] data from third parties on external devices" in order to gain an unfair advantage, putting the competitive integrity and the results at the Major-qualifying event under question.

While another investigation involving Akuma adds more fuel to the public outrage against the Ukrainian team, ESIC's findings have not verified the suspicions regarding them having access to live match data in the games played in the CIS RMR tournament.

There have been cheating scandals in the past and CS is still here, it hasn't nothing to do with Valorant... Funnily enough, there are also rumours stating that Valorant will die and I'm sure there are cheaters in Valorant just like with all online games.

its invasive, always on and riot games is a china based corporation and recently i heard that they will be recording voice comms. after all these cons do u get the benefit of a good anti cheat? idk the game is still very young to have smurfs and cheater problems but i think anti cheat based on analysing behaviour patterns would be better than riotguard

Fair enough. Kind of reminds me of the old AC's we used to download back in 1.6 but they weren't as reliable as Riots, that is if Riot's AC is effective.

Ive been playing the game since beta and from what i remember ive seen 1 or 2 cheaters that werent even ridiculously blatant (though i have seen a few of those in videos from people like shroud), in comparison to CS where i played seriously for 1 year and found a few more than 10, some being extremely blatant
2021-06-13 19:49
In theory it’s good. Doesn’t take long to actually find a cheat for valorant. Not harder than csgo.

Of course it is harder - cheaters actually get HW banned in Valorant, which is a biiiiiiiig-biiiiig difference, coz what is the your penalty in CS? You make another account... :D

Exactly. How hard is it? People do everything, even buys new games for hundreds of dollars to continue cheating. And then teh question comes: "But how many is actually willing to HW spoof? Not many..." Yeah okay sure.
2021-06-10 09:24
1 reply
Pretty much. It's a deterrent for some people, but the ones who do it actively to ruin other people's enjoyment are clearly willing to take the extra steps. Some of that behavior is straight up anti-social impulse control. It's not that every cheater is some terrible person, but some of these people, and I've met them in real life, are honestly awful and cheating is the least of the shit they do to the people around them.
2021-06-10 16:50
There are hwid spoofer softwares, some are even free so technically a copy of cs will cost more
2021-06-09 17:04
You can avoid hw bans but ofc its better to have those than not having them.

Not really. If people want to cheat they'll just cheat. People happily pay hundreds of dollars to continue cheating. Banning HW will make no difference since the HW spoofers are even free these days. Your analogy is also bad.

Any point in paying so much money to cheat in a game? NO ONE said that there are 0 cheaters in Valorant, but when you compare that to any other titles especially CS:GO it DOES INDEED look like there are 0 cheaters. Cheers!
2021-06-10 20:11
Yet there are like hundreds of times more cheaters in CS:GO than in Valorant. If my analogy is bad, what would you call your whole argument? Idiotic? Out of touch with reality? Mock me all you want, cheaters in CS:GO are VASTLY more common.

And I've also watched (and even been in) games with a cheater getting banned mid game. HW spoofers are free and it is easy to cheat in valorant. As easy as in any other game, really. The only game that kind of is "hard" to cheat on is overwatch because there you get HW AND need to pay for a new copy. And people still cheat the fuck out of OW.

It doesn't take a genius to see that some things were way too suspicious. Regardless, even if they are innocent, the following things are a bare minimum requirement for every event in the future: proprietary anti-cheat, team speak recording, player surroundings recording, at least 2 min -delay stream, etc.

Not really, every CHAOS clip could be explained and supported by the fact there was an actual anti-cheat during the game, on the other hand the Akuma situation is kinda flipped. You should not search for evidence to ban them but for a proof they didn't cheat since it's so obvious from the clips and all the facts like no teamspeak recording or no AC.
2021-06-09 16:20

Every hack expecialist would see that Chaos are cheating... Everyone talks about Anti-cheat like he is a good anti-cheat, and clips of aimlocks and wallbang on pixels that isn't bangables aren't explained by a bad anti-cheat that bans 1 cheater betwen 1000. Also, how speculation can be a proof of they are obvious cheating? We are on same boat, with the same proofs, but nobody belive us and now are doing the same thing... hipocrisy or preconcep of us?

No you clown. It is way harder to prove the use of cheating software on someone's pc than to prove the use of GOTV or a third party service with no match delay for info. The fact that you don't get that is just embarrassing.

It's harder but they don't even tried... thats the question, and I sure that if they catch Chaos, others teams like Akuma will be more afraid to do that... I not saying that Akuma is clear, only asking why no ones moves a hand to investigade when that occurs with us... just critize us for want justice, and now the whole world stops because maybe Akuma cheats against Navi... thats why i talk about hipocrisy
2021-06-09 18:23
1 reply
How would they "catch" Chaos? It is impossible to prove that cheating software was on a user's PC at the time of a match unless the anti-cheat or an admin detects it live. It doesn't matter how "hard" they could have tried. The Akuma thing is becoming more and more provable with this evidence and it doesn't require super-invasive or illegal actions on a user's home or PC.

There is evidence of betting fraud on Akuma's side of things but the investigation statement never mentioned other teams being involved, it's assumed as such if match-fixing is taking place.

But you can't win a matchfixing game vs a much stronger team without involving them. So maybe this Oleksandr knew about possible cheating tho
2021-06-09 14:52
12 replies
Not necessarily, you can match-fix without the opposing team being aware of this also. If you know your team will win or lose and then make money off of that, it isn't a gamble and therefore illegal. Let's hypothesise that the betting perpetrator knew Akuma was going to win because of the possibility of radar-hack/live-leaked footage of the match via an second monitor, this will equal easy money for the organisation and the bettor in question, the other teams do not necessarily need to be involved. ECIS leaked that Oleksandr was suspiciously betting on Akuma matches and if Oleksandr knew the outcome via Akuma's possibility of cheating, then that is match-fixing and cheating.
2021-06-09 14:59

yes, that's basically what I mean. I'm not accusing VP of participating in matchfixing, I mean, that if this guy made very accurate pre-match bets against the favourite, probably he knew that Akuma will have some advantage (unfair) to win that game. This post by ESIC proves not only matchfixing accusations, but the cheating ones too

Why are we bringing up Leaf, XEPPAA and Chaos? They were never confirmed to be cheating unlike the current ongoing investigation involving Akuma.
2021-06-09 14:47

it wasn't confirmed because there was no investigation, and it didn't have as much repercussion because I guarantee they would find something

There didn't need to be an investigation, the situation is unlike the current one.
2021-06-09 15:00
there were evidences of betting manipulation just before mibr and chaos match too
2021-06-09 17:52
You still don't understand the difference between these 2 cases? In leaf, xeppa case, there was anti-cheat in the tournament, there was voice chat/audio recordings for all players, the stream had a 3 minute delay, etc. In this tournament, there is no anti-cheat, no-delay stream, no recording of anything, etc. All this, combined with extremely suspicious behaviour, has led 14 teams to sign the open letter accusing Akuma of likely cheating, and demanding investigation.

2021-06-09 16:13
this doesn't mean they didn't cheat and that they shouldn't have been investigated at the time People just hate BR because Europeans and NA think are better than anyone and got recked by BR in 2016/2017

no, the CEO of akuma betted on them because he knew they had the live radar hack so they had 90% chance to win VP would never sign an investigation request if they were involved as well

yeah i guess, but its such a way to word it. i suppose they didnt want to say "its fixed cuz they cheated" cuz they dont have proof, but they couldve worded it differently if vp is clear of doing anything which is the likeliest thing

This is what valve does with any email. Except it comes from icefrog "Hey buddies Dota 2 need...." asap answer. But good is that ESIC recommends not to work with Akuma which means any Tier 1 TO wouldn't invite them. And funny is the next RMR is on the line will valve react until then?

i mean .. by the amount of outrage (e.g. 14/16 teams pushing for investigation of Akuma) within the pro scene and the community, they cannot NOT react ... i wasn't in the scene back then, but i believe this is (almost?) as big as the iBuyPower thing. Banning the TO from future tournaments is the least thing they should do, but then also ban fucking Akuma and their CEO for life and maybe even legal actions

People say that CEO of akuma have made 2 bets : 27.05 VP - Acuma (0:2), and 30.05 VP-Akuma (2:0) - accurate prematch bets. 100% VP are not involved, so why he can't afford himself to bet on his team winning (1st bet)??? its for sure legit, so wtf?? BUT if he made the second bet, and have forced his team to lose the match, this is called matchfixing and should be punished. But if all the players are not invloved, then CEO is not guilty, why can he be guilty because of BETTING??? WE ARE LACK OF INFORMATION ESIC OMG......
2021-06-09 15:09
2 replies
Its a similar situation as what happened in AU CS, if you are in some way affiliated with the team you are betting for or against, dont bet, as there are always a chance of an interest conflict being there. That whole situation should have served as a good lesson to the rest of the regions.
2021-06-09 15:11
Read the ESIC statement. They say he put bets on the first match. The match that was sus. So that means you bet on this match, cuz you know your team has a big advantage. And about betting. Since Australien players are banned people should know that you don't bet when you work with teams/players Even Prof and Striker said they wouldn't bet because they could have inside information.

Akuma is not an org, it's just the name of their mix Project X was an org where 4/5 players used to play just a while ago under the CEO who is mentioned here
2021-06-09 15:12
Those guys played under the banner of Project X and thats when they were banned by most of the bookies because of suspicious betting activity. It's not like accusations against current Akuma (they constantly changed name of their team just to deceive bookies) players started in this CIS RMR tournament, it just finally shed a light on them. And thank fkin god for that.

i mean it was the old ceo who was caught betting, which they currently have no relation with the Akuma players. The players themselves weren't caught betting on themselves so I don't see why the Akuma players shouldn't play in future rmr matches

In CIS rmr almost everybody accused akuma of cheating even the teams that didnt play against them...If u cant see that from the videos and povs of their players then its just sad. No anticheat no delay etc. It was the perfect time to try and cheat.

This was suppose to be a cheating case. Then they probably cant find any concrete evidence against akuma then they turned it into a "match fixing" "betting fraud" case. Match fixing might include some notable teams such as navi and vp because those are the biggest upsets. I still dont know how is betting on ur own team a betting fraud. Idk . it does not add up. I get that they are not allowed to bet on the teams that they might be affiliated with but akuma is just a random mix not an org. Meh. Night

and this idiot keep streaming on twitch with bait names of his translations like ,,im turn off my second monitor\\\ im thinking about going to valorant'' What a dumb idiot. I think that main strategy from Akuma idiots was like we dont be hide our hacks will do it most obvious way like 2-0 NAVI and VP, and everybody will just think that we are so good , cause if we really cheating we must hide it and win only importants rounds etc.

"illegally" ? what? you think they went to Shyshko's house and broke into it, to hack his laptop and check his bets? someone is always gonna talk in cases like these, because there's always at least one guy that wants to save his own ass and would throw all others under the bus.

recommends ESIC-member Tournament Organizers to not include Akuma. so we have a CIS MMR, starladder, on the 27th, if they choose to not include akuma and they turn up to be innocent or the proof arent convincing enough, they are losing the chance to qualify for the major. So valve should clarify this situation and make a decision before this rmr tournament.

Haha noob russians. Even my mom would know that if you were to do "suspicious" betting, you need an orange (scapegoat). Imagine using your own info to bet on your own team.

Most bookies didn't even allow betting on ex-project x matches because they have had so many matchfixing and ghosting issues in the past. J3kie is king of 322. This is not new info. Tbh idk why VOLVO allowed j3kie and co into the RMR to begin with. Absolute clowns.

LOL, VP involved.... ESIC WTF???? Shishko is ex-manager Akuma team. If Zeus, Kane or somebody bet on Navi and Navi win - they will banned Navi? Srsly? And that is proof?? OMG... its not even funny
2021-06-09 18:15
But the Shyshko guy is no longer their CEO, they disbanded and are orgless. So how is that betting on own team against VP? Project X betting, was wrong on him.
2021-06-09 18:26
WTF BAN AKUMA
2021-06-09 18:27
You couldn't bet in Project X matches in most bookies for so long (Bet365, betway, etc) so who cares anyway? They should check other teams that are banned in bet365 like Navi Junior or B5

This feels wrong. I read this as if they are looking for something, just any reason, to ban Akuma. I have no opinion on the allegations of them cheating or not, but it doesn't feel right to look for other reasons to ban them under pressure of the community/CIS pro scene, due to a lack of proof. I have no clue how "matchfixing" can be that much of a/the only problem in a match where you are winning as the underdog, compared to other reported cases in the past. I wouldnt even call it "fixing".
2021-06-09 21:14

It's not a reason to ban them, if ESIC did their jobs these guys would have been banned long ago. They ban only AU kids. There a lot of fixed games in CIS, NA and Europe.

There might be a lot of fixed games, but that's not my point. I don't like the Akuma witch-hunt. The matchfixing accusations seem like a backup plan to ban them, because there's no proof of them cheating in the RMR. I'm sure there's way more fixing going on in the lower tier scenes. But my comment was about the Akuma case in particular.
2021-06-13 10:32

Someone who can fix a game, can definitely cheat also. This tournament did everything they could so no evidence of someone cheating could exists. So, it's valve and esic fault that they have rigged tournaments and teams (rigged because cheats also change the outcome of a game). They don't care.

Hope they're caught.

2021-06-10 04:02
