Gambit dismantle G2 to set up IEM Summer grand final against OG

The Russian team have ensured their fifth consecutive grand final appearance after a one-sided affair against G2.

Gambit have advanced to the IEM Summer grand final following a swift 2-0 win over G2 in the semi-finals, setting up the first-ever encounter against OG in the best-of-five title decider of the $250,000 event. The Nemanja "nexa" Isaković-led side have been eliminated in joint-third place as they could not live up to high expectations following a convincing display in the group stage, suffering their fourth consecutive loss to the CIS-based squad since February.

The favorites got their first official taste of Ancient in the semi-final series and showcased a high level on the newest map with a terrifying performance on the CT side. Gambit clearly put in the work to be ready to play the map in case G2 decided to pick it, which Abay "Hobbit" Khasenov confirmed in the post-match interview.

"Big respect and thanks to our analyst and coach, they expected [G2 to pick Ancient]," the Kazakhstani star said, adding that the team did their homework when it came to analyzing how G2 played the map in their group stage affair against FunPlus Phoenix. "I would say it was 60% of anti-strat and 40% of our game."

Gambit's grand final streak continues

Gambit got off to a flying start in the series after opting for Vertigo, their most successful map as of late, securing a comfortable victory on the opener on the back of a near-flawless Terrorist side. G2 looked out of their depth against the slow-paced style of the CIS squad, putting together only two solitary rounds in the first half as they couldn't keep up with Gambit's mid-round calls.

The French-Balkan team kept their spirits high and slowly chipped away at the massive deficit after the second pistol round went their way, but they were ultimately too far behind and their opponents clinched the last few rounds necessary to pick up the series lead.

G2 hoped to catch Gambit unprepared on Ancient, which Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov's squad had had yet to play in official matches, but it was just the opposite that ended up being the case. The world's No. 1 team looked more than capable in their debut on the newest addition to the map pool and left their adversaries in the dust after yet another dominant display, this time starting on the defense. G2 didn't give themselves much space to work with after claiming just two rounds in the first half once again, and after some early struggles in the second Gambit went on to clinch a convincing win to make their way to the grand final.

Man, this is just really sad. I was rooting for G2 to finally win an event :( Regardless, it's unbelievably insane what Gambit is doing. It's their 8th Grand Final of 2021, and 5th Tier1 GrandFinal IN A ROW. That's next level. No disrespect, but I really really want IEM Cologne to not get shifted to online at the last moment.

Yeah would be so cool to see IEM Cologne on LAN even though it would only be studio environment but still I can really see some teams falling and some teams rising from that
2021-06-12 23:16
I don't understand how people could think G2 was going to win, seems so stupid to me, and I'm a G2 fan they just lack that actual power to win tournaments, they just lack the structure and the mentality to win big events

they have the old Na Optic style. they do either terrible or great in these really chaotic situations they force themselves, and honestly for lack of a nice way to say it their teamwork is absolute shit. it feels like an individual game for NiKo and hunter, with the rest left to dry

The closest thing to "great" I've seen from international G2 is that IEM Katowice run where they got butt fucked by NaVi in the grand final, and even then I felt it was a bit of a fluke with the stupidest of wins against FNATIC. Other than that i think it's been just pathetic close wins against teams much worse than them, and when they face a real team like old astralis or current Gambit they just seem stupid. Yes, their teamwork is literally just flashing for NiKo and Hunter and hoping they get a 3k to win a round, it's depressing

when I mean great, I mean a map to map basis. If they 16-0d Gambit then got 16-0d twice in return this series I wouldn't even have been surprised. They aren't a bad team in terms of skill and it keeps them competitive, but past that it's so inconsistent, they can't make these deep runs without it looking like luck

They can't even beat the top teams with a strong 2-0 score, it's sad because I love to see them play lol

IEM Summer has been pretty bad in terms of their bracket draw. If the groups got seeded differently I don't think they make playoffs
2021-06-13 17:56
Spot on man,I like some of their players but don't know where "G2's are favourites to win the title" are even coming from either
2021-06-13 11:40
Sorry, but this isnt about teamwork. This one is all in the stupid Ancient pick. Basically you're saying to Gambit that you know you're inferior and need a fking coin toss to win, instead of playing real cs in Inferno or Nuke, idk.

they got thrashed on BOTH maps Vitality arguably could've won their series 2-0, it was just a back and forth with G2 literally only looking good as fraggers. I can throw better flashes then them and I haven't touched CS in a week. They almost got 2-0d then 2-1d by FPX, and they literally had Maden carry them through the first map. They almost got beat by some dude from Africa single-handedly. They looked good against ES, the team that in all their EU outings sit 14-21 in maps against CIS and EU teams. That's just IEM Summer. I can go all the way back to last years Katowice on how they've been a consistent shitshow designed around NiKo and Hunter, when until recently Hunter wasn't even performing. Also you're logic is like the same thing as when Astralis started picking Vertigo "play one of the maps every team plays instead of looking for tactical advantages in a teamplay based game"
2021-06-13 17:55
No, g2 is a choker team. Those 3 balkans are specialize in choking. And with 2 ordinary french player they will go nowhere. Kicking major champion lilke kennys is a blunder of the decade tho

kennyS was given a lot of space to play and the only thing he was able to do was missing easy shots against players peeking him dry, no flashes or anything, just straight peeks and kennyS missed a lot of them at least doesn't slow the team and creates space for them also, if kennyS sucked with the awp, imagine him without an awp, he was horrible. I don't understand how could kennys miss so many rifle sprays with the amount of time he has played the game kennys playstyle is just so outdated it's sad
