daps returns to Counter-Strike as Evil Geniuses head coach

The 27-year-old has transitioned back to CS:GO as coach.

Evil Geniuses have announced Damian "daps" Steele as their new head coach on Tuesday, marking the Canadian's return to Counter-Strike eight months after he switched to VALORANT. daps steps into the spot left vacant by Wilton "zews" Prado's departure from the team at the start of June.

"Excited to start my coaching journey with the boys, happy to be back in CS", daps wrote on Twitter as he reunited with his former teammates Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte and Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov.

daps will be coaching stanislaw and co.

As the in-game leader of NRG for over two years, daps built the foundation of the current Evil Geniuses team. With the core of Ethan "Ethan" Arnold, Brehze, and CeRq, he went on to win two international titles and peak at No. 4 in the world ranking. daps was replaced by Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz ahead of the StarLadder Major, with the whole team moving from NRG to Evil Geniuses shortly after the event.

daps spent the following year in Cloud9 and Gen.G, two teams that currently aren't fielding a roster in CS:GO, before trying his luck in VALORANT. Following eight months away from Counter-Strike, the Canadian returns to the game he competed in for eight years.

From the coach slot, daps will be aiming to rejuvenate an Evil Geniuses side that placed last in four of their last five events, but showed potential by making playoffs at IEM Summer 2021. daps will have his coaching debut for Evil Geniuses at the IEM Cologne Play-In on July 6-7.

Evil Geniuses are now:

United States Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte
Bulgaria Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov
Canada Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz
United States Owen "oBo" Schlatter
Poland Michał "MICHU" Müller

when does his ban end again? In his case id stick with Valorant until atleast the next contract expiration after that depending on his standing in the scene. He isn't guaranteed a top spot in CS so sticking with Valorant is the safer option since he's much fresher in the minds and is gonna be able to climb the scene sooner

Perfect plan tbh If I were daps I'd never joined a team that kicked me out in the first place... Moreover, coincidence or not, stanislow took over daps' position not 1 time(NRG) or 2 times(coL) but 3 times if we count Splyce. So... This is a good opportunity for daps to finally dethrone snakeslaw

Most people who follow CS understand that Daps is a good leader. I'm sure there are a number of teams that would value his input, but my guess is he didn't want to give up playing in some capacity.

1 Month as a free agent before deciding to try luck in Valorant it's not an opinion. EU/CIS teams don't rate US/CAD players. Not even when NA won a major. The only exceptions that come to mind would be Elige, Brehze and maybe Osee. And hen you have an oBo, he "fucks up" and has to wait months until EG searches a new player... Daps never got a chance to actually join a T1-T2 EU team... So this was one of his limied options to "comeback" to CS.
2021-06-21 23:42

Aside from the fact that you're pretty much full of shit, 1 month isn't that long, and most of the top teams have reasonably solid coaches at the moment. There's no reason for him not to join a team with players he's familiar with, but perpetuating the NA SUCKS meme by speaking for top players (as if you know any of their opinions) is ridiculous at best. Your argument might've held water if there wasn't a clear history of NA/EU mixes for years, and that's not taking into account how many NA players ended up in EU mixes in the past year alone...
2021-06-22 02:22
1 reply
If you really think Daps didn't get picked as a player or coach by an EU/CIS team because of your sorry excuses, you're actually delusional. A month is enough to get 0 offers and make the decision to move to Valorant... "clear history of NA/EU mixes for years" Don't come with this bullshit. How many of those mixes were pushed by EU-based teams? I only recall Rogue, which was more focused on NA than EU (With Hiko that's other proof of what I said about NA players). "How many NA players ended up in EU mixes in the past year" like which ones? The 2 in the NA based org CoL? Or the 2 in the NA based org C9? Please...

Yeah I heard him too say that, he also couldn't hide his smirk smiley face when asked about retuning back to CS tho. Just a matter of time, Valorant is just not the same. It's a goofy game, and Riot doesn't know much about balancing a shooter, just look at the leaks.. Already 2 new agents planned to come soon, with their dumb abilities everytime they get worse too (hello OW flashbacks xD).. massive patches changing everything every 2-3 months.. CS is CS. It will be the same game forever and I hope it is always like that.

Yeah this is where I disagree the new agent looks pretty broken but he will probably be nerfed pretty fast. CS being the same game for 20+ years is really what hurts it for me. besides one new map or gun that has a very small impact on the meta it is just the same thing the whole time. It gets boring to be honest. Valorant has some op things but the fact that it is a fresh game and has new stuff to be excited about is a huge plus for me. CS currently is stagnating and dropping off in playerbase because it never changes and is the same thing all the time. Valve needs to do something before it is too late.

I’d honestly liken Daps more to NBK The exact same cycle of build a team that starts of at a run jumping to a top 30 team in a few weeks before your results slip and the team axes you for a better player Except I think NBKs issue might be more getting lazy on the training than just not being that good

daps formed the good EG line up with tarik and ethan, they came from the really bottom and rise up to the top 10, when they were having their best results was when daps got replaced for stan. Stan did a good job in the beginning, but then they plummeted, ethan decided to be unprofessional, started playing really bad, and now they are where they are, they got a bit better with michu and obo, but honestly they are still playing so bad.

2021-06-21 18:33

To be honest, not too confident with Tarik replacing stanislaw however kicking stanislaw is kind of the best option. The only reason as to why I don't like Tarik as an IGL is because it's not 2018 anymore. It's not like you can use some pug strats and frag out in today's CS since everything is more structured now.
2021-06-21 18:50
1 reply
and the main reason daps was kicked, it is because tarik wanted to play loose style. Daps and Tarik were clashing about the structure. Tarik as an IGL is a bit overrated. The teams was already built when he decided to igl and stewie gave a lot of imput. He was a good support player thought, pretty versatile.
2021-06-22 02:01
Stan was just NAs choice of an axeman when teams decided they were past being nice to daps for building their team for them after his form dropped I don’t think recall them having a non professional feud in the way there was between Shazam and Dazed

not a thing it will never be -stan +daps stan will still igl. Daps will fix few things what will happen is basically daps knows he won't be able to frag as player but still has knowledge. Stan on the other hand is mediocre IGL/Rifler just like CadiaN was everyone was hating on cadian i see nothing but positives in this change.

This is interesting to say the least, given the whole history of Daps getting replaced by Stan every time. I still believe that they need to get a better IGL cause Stan isn't cutting anymore tbh, too low fragging power. Maybe get Alex? Not the fan of him either but, not many options.

But you can see some flashy moments of stanislaw. Maybe, if he focus more on his individual performance, he could be decent. Honestly, except MSL or Alex, I don't see anyone else.

Did you see a lot of improvment when imapet was coaching 100T ? If stan and daps can work together, EG can be a decent team. They already upset few EU teams. Some matches were pretty close.

garbage CS player realises he can't just switch to Valorant and be the best so he goes crawling back to CS as a 'coach' so he can stay relevant.

no, more like he liked CS:GO better, It was obvious from the start that he couldn't keep up with the best

wow, bring up the superlatives, make your post stand out. Use extreme words to describe something non-extreme.. Let's not care what a word actually means, and just use them as positive or negative words. Language is devolving atm, not evolving. He is not even "garbage" in it's "slang" sense, no pro is garbage, or used to be pro's are garbage. PS. You already live in the "idiocracy" I see :D Genius movie, but came out a decade to early.

Great to see him in a role he might not be kicked from as soon as the team seems to be on the right path.
