FaZe send Gambit packing in Cologne

The international team continue their impressive run at the German tournament.

World No. 1 Gambit exited IEM Cologne on Friday following a 2-1 defeat to FaZe in the first round of the single-elimination playoffs. The CIS side, who have been at the top of the world rankings for over two months, were left to rue a series of crucial errors that handed the initiative to their opponents, who used their superior LAN experience to stay out of harm's way and set up a semi-final clash with Natus Vincere on Saturday.

FaZe exhibited the necessary mental strength to respond to setbacks, including an 11-1 deficit on their map pick of Ancient - a gamble that nearly backfired. Then they almost won Overpass after coming back from five map points down in regulation and one in overtime. On Inferno, FaZe were simply a cut above their opponents, who struggled to cope with the pressure of dealing with a team that was outside the top 30 in the rankings heading into the tournament.

"They are the best team in the world, but I saw some weaknesses," Finn "karrigan" Andersen said after the match. "We also took a huge gamble in the veto, where we could pick Ancient or stay in our comfort zone. Today we had bad starts but we adapted on the fly. I'm proud of my teammates."

Gambit got off to a flying start, cruising to an 11-1 lead on Ancient, with Abay "Hobbit" Khasenov leading the charge with 16 frags and a stunning 140 ADR. FaZe were struggling for ideas and couldn't keep up in the fragging department, but they showed some resistance in the final stages of the half to keep their comeback hopes alive.

karrigan praised his team's ability to adapt on the fly after rough starts

FaZe carried that momentum into the second half and put some rounds together, forcing Gambit to call a timeout at 11-8 after they were shut down by Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken on the A site. The CIS side looked revitalised after the timeout and secured their first rounds of the half, but FaZe soon regained control of the game. karrigan's troops took advantage of their opponents' mistakes and pulled off numerous multi-kills to secure the map in dominant fashion.

Gambit again came out the brighter side on Overpass and strolled to a 7-2 lead after preventing their opponents from stringing rounds together, but they didn't really seem to have the game under control called two timeouts in a row after losing rounds. FaZe capitalised on their opponents' indecisiveness and rode the wave of momentum to bring the deficit to a solitary round before the break.

The second half brought a reinvigorated Gambit, who hit map point at 15-10 before FaZe clawed their way back into the game with some excellent calling and forced overtime, much to their opponents' frustration. The Russians kept their cool, though, and despite wasting another map point in the first overtime - which included a stellar ace by Helvijs "broky" Saukants -, managed to put the game to bed.

Gambit's players breathed a sigh of relief when Overpass finally came to a close, but the respite was brief as FaZe came back swinging on Inferno. The international team ended the first half up by three after a dominant 6-0 run, and then ran amok in the second half following a successful second-round force - courtesy of a timely effort by Twistzz - to deny the world No.1 team a shot at a second ESL Pro Tour Championship level title.

"It's going to be a very tough task," karrigan said when asked about Saturday's clash with NAVI. "We were ranked 37th and now we're in the semi-finals. Now it's two games to be the champion of Cologne. At this point, anything can happen. We have nothing to lose, as I've said all tournament."

He seems to be improving a lot. Was always shit against teams with good snipers, but he has played cerq, poizon, degster, zywoo, cadian and sh1ro and he was good in most matches. I think against spirit was the toughest match out of those.

This surely has to be the biggest upset not only in this tournament, but of this entire year! I can't believe it, I turned off twitch when Gambit were up 13-8 on Ancient, thinking the game would be hella one-sided in favor of the current #1. I gotta admit, before the game I thought Faze's run was a fluke one. Boy was I wrong! It's going to be epic tomorrow vs Navi, and even tho I cheer for the latter, but let's fucking go FaZe Clan, huge respect!

He has been my fav player since kinguin times. Watching him perform on ancient yesterday gave me pure joy. Then he kinda went back to his current form in last two maps. It seems like he has lost some confidence plus playing online was not the best scenario for him cause he always performs good on lan! Obviously lans are coming back so im pretty sure he will improve again

He used to be a consistent performer till katowice 2018. he had fever and admitted how his teammates carried him in that tournament. From there on out, he has been mr. Inconsistent :( We just see the flashes of brilliance here and there. And he has just become a one map wonder.

FaZe will likely not move into the grand final, unless Navi pull one of their famous collapsing performances, but this is still such a breath of fresh air for them. Also, Gambit losing to both G2 and FaZe definitely shows that they're not really ready to be a true #1 team. This wasn't even on a big stage... That's going to be a shock to everyone but Hobbit.

I don't know, I wouldn't be so confident about Navi's chances against FaZe! Especially considering that nearly every match between those teams in the nearest past was very close. And that was when FaZe were doing badly. Whoever wins today, it will probably come down to a third map and will be super close

GG Faze! Wish u to beat Navi! Gambit had a good experience, so now they will comeback stronger, like really. Just a bit need to work with mentality. Skills are in a very good level, just felt nervous. Not bad result for the 1st Lan overall!

The problem is that they are not recognized in the same way as ,,, NIP, FNATIC, ASTRALIS ,,,, 4 major, if you look at the history of csgo teams that have dominated, then they can do it at most 1-2 years, in the period we are in now then it is cis that dominates, but not quite yet, here we have to see that they can be on top for a long time and win some MAJOR before they can be TOTALLY DOMINATED, i have always wanted s1MPLE to win a MAJOR, he deserved it

Go home mother fuckers, go home! Let's go Olofmeister!
2021-07-17 10:04
this is, in fact, funny how many ppl shrieks here that FaZe should do that online etc. How much has changed during this pandemic. Before that, winning online tournament was completely irrelevant and only CS matters was LAN. I hope we are getting back there.
2021-07-17 10:12
1-Botzera was the problem 2- Twistzz and broky won't be able to carry forever 3- OLOF is OP 4- rain needs to be more consistent ffs 5- karrigan has top 10 worst aim in t1 rn but it's a sacrifice for his msasive brain 6- omegalul i am so happy for faze boys and hope for a great semi))
2021-07-17 10:39

Gamb0t fans malding hahahaha. Proven onliners . Cry now
2021-07-17 11:23
Faze's CT side is just too strong for some teams. It's really fun to watch how they comeback from those 11-4 deficits after playing t side first. Still, I think Navi will take it tonight, just because of S1mple, since that's what Gambit was missing, someone who could just go and kill
2021-07-17 11:37
I don't see the problem. It will be a good exp for Gambit future. FaZe wasn't better in shooting skills, wasn't better in tactics, but they looked like relaxed and confident, they often did risky mooves, while Gambit prefered to play more safe, sometimes they were too nervous, it's a matter of psychology. Gambit's time on LAN will come sooner or later, i believe in it.

yes the 4 rounds they got on ancient's T side was not about skill or tactics it's just that Karrigan had the balls to do what was necessary at that moment which was making chaos. However the overpass T side was much better, they had some good T round strats that I wasn't expecting from them. however, their strat book ran dry and they weren't showing up in the fragging department until overtime. At last, Inferno was completely anti-stratting, if you watched previous gambit matches you'd know they changed some stuff up in their CT side to avoid getting anti-stratted, however, Karrigan read it after one gun round, changed their strat on the fly and got some beautiful rounds. It's true though, gambit's over-rotation and overall nervousness played a huge part in their loss, but no one expected such good mid-game adaptation from faze either, I think most, if not all of the teams that didn't make it to playoffs would lose to gambit here. I think gambit and heroic are great teams and I believe we should give them time to adjust to the LAN environment, I think out of their 10 players, only 2 have played in front of a crowd (or maybe 3, I think refrezh played as a stand-in in one LAN for an NA team a long time ago) I won't write them off as "onliners" right now, but they have a limited time to pick themselves up and show what they are capable of, or their team will break (internally).
