Valve launches $1 million Workshop contest

Skin designers have until late October to submit their weapon finishes in the theme of 'Dreams & Nightmares'.

Valve have launched a $1 million Workshop contest, in which the CS:GO developers are looking for the ten best original dream or nightmare-themed weapon finishes. The competition is set to begin on July 22, and artwork can be submitted until October 21.

The company has encouraged skin designers to either adapt existing works or create entirely new art in their submissions. The winners, chosen by November 21, will be awarded $100,000 each and have their artwork shipped in the game in the form of a new case called Dreams & Nightmares.

The developers have selected 17 specific weapons for the case, which are listed here. To help explain the process of selection of the skins that make it into a CS:GO case, Valve have a style guide for weapon finishes available, in which they go over key factors that determine the tiers of skins and whether they end up getting accepted, such as their salience, or recognizability.

How is it a scam? Valve could have just done nothing but at least this way someone is getting paid a lot of money for having their artwork and passion on full display and enjoyed by millions.. The notoriety alone would be worth it IMO.

I think (this my be wrong) that valve takes 50% from key sells, and other 50% is dived by creators, so out of 17 (usually) creators each gets ~0.065€ and considering that people open millions and millions of cases, creators might earn over half a million EACH (if people open 10m cases, one creator would get ~647058€).
2021-07-21 21:41
1 reply
I don't think its 50% to the creators - anymore anyway? I know it used to be that. Even so though there's been some creators that have come out saying they make 6 figures a year from cs skins now. This is just a scam covered in cotton candy to make valve look good

Valve retains its license to the winning entries as User Generated Content under the Steam Subscriber Agreement, and payment of the prize money will be complete compensation in lieu of any payment under Workshop Supplemental Terms. This is the whole payment. No % after this
2021-07-22 00:08
Lol source to back that up? Or you just another reddit parrot and just making stuff up. The rough estimates said they made on average 40kis
2021-07-22 06:02
Source: trust me bro
2021-07-22 19:42
It's good they give back, sure, but Valve profit from it more than the creators. Their market system is not designed to protect the customer, it's to earn them money. Their cut on skin sales, like their cut on game sales, is very high. The amount of cash prize money going to teams at a major pales in comparison to what they earn, they could increase the pot a solid bit more and still come out ahead every single time.

"their money making practices are explicitly anti-consumer and intentionally anti-competitive you fucking retard." Oh tell us more about these terrible practices ... in 3 days once you get unbanned ofc LMAO BTW the term "anticonsumer" is a corpo PR babble, which nobody with half a brain uses to make a point.
2021-07-21 23:21

I've literally never been banned, and saying things that are already open discussion between publishers and the media isn't some huge offense. Hell, I've said this before on this site multiple times. But using Google would more than explain it. They're notorious for these issues, from their cut on title sales, to marketplace practices, to refusal to defend their customers over scammers as well as their refusal to support publishers on platforms that compete with their own. EDIT: yeah you're right, anti-consumer practices are "PR babble" and not a term used for litigation. You know, the thing used when you're sued over improper behavior, like, oh Valve have been. Gosh, I'm glad HLTV dude #4659732895 is here to tell me I'm stupid.

Saying "fucking retard" is easy ban. Since you still didn´t understand that a term "anti-consumer" is a nonsencial corbo PR gibberish, I have no idea what are you arguing for. And if you think that their cut on sales is "anti-competitive" than that´s just another LOL. 0% would be anticompetitive, wouldn´t it .... LMFAO. EDIT: "Used of litigation" LMFAOXddddd Stop it, stop it!! xDDDDD Literally ANYTHING can be "used for litigation" ...doesn´t mean nothing. I can use "you ass looks fucking disgusting" as a part of a litigation. You seem again clueless about basic argumentation, wouldn´t dive into actual legal concepts if I were you.

Considering player numbers are higher now than just about any time (excluding last year where COVID was keeping people inside, hence more players), saying it's dying is silly... Compare player numbers now to 2018/2019.

2021-07-21 21:31
I know this is your conspiracy theory, but almost every skins in CSGO cases nowadays are from workshop artists, and Valve credits them everytime and they get a share of the revenue from the skins (or at least a good pay, not sure how it works). They would never copy designs on there to release as their own, they usually use existing valve made patterns to make their own skins and change the colour, but those are mainly in collections, not cases

2021-07-22 12:25

It's kinda hard to find info on that, but apparently skin creators get a cut from each key bought to open the case they are featured in. I don't know if artists with higher end skins make more but I'm guessing they all make a similar amount of money, otherwise everyone would try to make really fancy skins. Here are some links to articles that gave me a bit more info about how it works, but Valve is quite secretive about this. mashable.com/article/counter-strike-skin.. dotesports.com/counter-strike/news/valve.. As for the inspiration, I wouldn't think they'd inspire themselves too much of other's designs, usually when they make collection skins they reuse other Valve made texture from other collections and go with a theme for the higher end skins like they did with the 3 broken fang collections, I'm sure they got some good artists themselves (but yeah I know it's just a theory of yours in the end, I don't mean to put you down but I just think it'd be extremely unlikely)

they already add community maps. and the people who have gotten skins accepted in collections earn way more than 100k dollars per skin, which is what they will pay here

Oh great the 2-3 shitty maps that have been added during Operations for the last 2 years got some money which only lasts for a few months before it stops generating revenue and gets removed Im sure the other hundreds of maps creators with maps equal or better to them are so happy about it Skin revenue is permanent so long as the skin market is up, maps do not have this Maps not made by Valve are dropped in favour of worse ones that are made in Valve, even if they are updated continuously and are eventually pulled from even MM servers

yes i know, but new maps can keep the scene alive.. also a competition gives the map makers a reason to make maps. Ofcourse the revenue from skins is much higher but i believe a map competition organized by Valve itself can keep the game alive :D

csgo community is very conservative, every time valve create new map or change old, community begin crying and shitting on them so why would they spend it on maps? skins=money, maps=hate
2021-07-21 21:33
I dont get why people shit on valve for making this. They are literally giving back a shit ton of money to the community and tbh it really helps people who have been doing it for a while. People will hate on anything and will shit without a proper reason :(

"People will hate on anything and will shit without a proper reason :(" Exactly, people like just to be outraged at something. This comment from Reddit sums it up: "You’re honestly fucking complaining that artists are ONLY getting six figures for a single skin? You honestly find a problem with that? No, you don’t. You’re just finding something to bitch about. Something to be a contrarian over. Most artists don’t make $100,000 A YEAR for the skins they make. It’s an incredible deal."

One of the rare occasions of a smart hltv and a smart reddit comment, sadly especially rare in the cs community. Its almost sad how ppl just wanna be mad and cry about anything. Its almost unbearable for me, I dont wanna know how bad it has to be for the cs dev team or devs of other games, constantly having to listen to worthless opinions thrown around by teens or ppl who never even finished high school.
2021-07-22 16:09
The problem isn't that they're hosting the contest. It's that they're doing it to stop sharing profits with skin artists/designers. It's 100k flat for the winners instead of consistent revenue sharing. Would this lump sum be more than what the previous deal was? Of course not.
2021-07-22 11:19
2 replies
Source? Dude trust me. Most artists could have and can only dream about making 100k, yes some select few might lose money compared to the usual method, but the overwhelming majority will get a significant raise in terms of their payment for making skins.
2021-07-22 16:14

I don't need a source to identify the main idea of capitalism: companies exist to make money. Valve isn't a charity. They don't think in terms of "good deals for artists". They solely consider profit. Regardless, you're advocating for the change. You need to prove that the change is a benefit to the people it impacts. Feel free to make as many arrogant and dismissive replies further in the thread, the truth is still that you are being a cuck for a multibillion dollar company.

2021-07-21 22:16
Dude I love Valve, Steam is a fantastic product, doesnt mean I cant criticize them whenever they do something goofy or dumb. In this case it's goofy. Its been clear for a long time the dev team for CS is very small, maybe a bit larger now valorant is stealing players, but they don't have enough in house to devote to making art they outsource it to the community and you can bet your ass they're going to take more than just the top 10 for future cases, change a couple things and call it theirs. A few artists will get paid for their efforts so that's not a bad thing

Ok so I read it. Seems like there will be 10 winning skins where the creator get 100k$ for each, and one artist can win with more than one entry. Not a bad idea. Not only will it likely attract a lot of creativity and attention, it will also make Valve more than their money back if the skins get popular.

Well I don't think people will get more hype just because of the prize pool. Even the prize pool is 500k all the team fans will still be watching and if you are not a fan, 10 million dollar still won't make you watch the tournament. If you look at how valve marketing their tournaments vs Riot or Epic games, you will see clearly the difference. Not even mentioning Valve only sees Dota as their only kid.

U're wrong here, dota 2 has fewer player base than csgo but the International 2019 final was watched by almost 2m people.

More in the prize pool will attract more viewers as well as make orgs fund more into csgo teams that again will raise the viewership

Actually, I do have an information. You're wrong again, monkey LUL Creators get money of each key that is sold to someone and people make way more than 40K for each skin, you can ask someone who makes them. Oh wait, you can't, because you don't know anybody LUL. No one will tell you exact numbers on the internet, because it's TOS you dolby.

>So far, the total payments made to individuals for the creation of in-game items sold in Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have passed $57 million. This money was earned by over 1,500 contributors spread out across 75 countries. Learn to read. Keywords: total, across dota2,tf2,csgo, 1500 individuals, payment across entire life span. 60m/1500= 40k on avg Valve paying 100k Go cry now

You asked for data, I gave you data. If that's your take, fine, I get it. 100k granted isn't a bad thing after all, some could get less than that, that's how average works. The thing is, with the commition % they also had a chance to earn more and that was removed in this contest.

You are still assuming a lot while having zero factual information to base that upon: 1. You don't know what the cut% were so you have no idea if they ever pulled significantly more than 100k. It could be that on average creators made 100k and hence why valve went with it. It could be the other way around too so you can't just paint valve one way or the other 2. If this is for an operation case then remember that creators make a lot less for operation case because of short life span. 3. There's no guarantee that the case would do good. so if you're gonna operate on the hypothetical that there's a chance that the case does good and creators could have potentially made more then see it from other angle too that case could do bad and the creators are still guaranteed to make good money regardless of that. It's guaranteed money regardless of performance.
2021-07-22 22:46
That's from 2015. People are STILL getting money RIGHT NOW from cases that were made back then. It's way above 100 grand.
2021-07-23 19:30
I mean they could also do with rewarding some of the others for their dedication as they saw fit too but I guess this is a pretty cool incentive either way

I'm surprised they haven't done this 100 times already. Can't wait for there to be some stupid weird drama on a simple contest.

Tip for a nightmare skin: On a black background there is a shiny model which is watching straight into the ground like spinbotters does.

how about a 1 Million Anti Cheat Code Contest ... fucking Skin Shit ... all this bullshit about Skins with this retarted Generation is pure Cancer!
2021-07-22 09:13
It's clear where Valves priorities lie when they are willing to drop $1M on a skin contest while the player experience in MM is horrific.
2021-07-22 09:46
This is only volvo sponsored tournament s0mple can win
2021-07-22 10:25
I wonder if Valve will share their profits from the designs? This contest could be a way to stop paying out artists.
2021-07-22 10:52
Big prize money great, but is "create a new cool skin" the best Valve could come up with? How sad..... Looks like all talents have left Valve already and all they can do nowadays is to milk a money cow and print their own money until it is dry.

2021-07-22 14:03
Yes ofc Valve is probably waiting community to come up with their own anti-cheat like when community created cs as a hl mod or dota was created as a warcraft mod

They should do a contest for maps too. Maybe we won't have a poor map pool like now...
