PGL confirms Major will take place in Stockholm
The Major location was confirmed after months of uncertainty, with PGL now aiming for a full house for the playoffs in the Avicii Arena.
Update: The Major has been moved to start on October 26.
PGL has announced that the upcoming Major will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, as originally planned.
The confirmation came after the Swedish government announced last Tuesday that it would further ease pandemic-related restrictions in the country, removing the final hurdle preventing the Major from taking place as intended with indoor events allowed to run at full capacity from late September on.
The tournament organizers will begin ticket sales for the $2 million event on September 22 and aim to have a full house in the approximately 14,000-seater Avicii Arena for the playoffs stage, which will run on November 4-7.
PGL Major Stockholm will witness CS:GO's return to large-scale live events for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020. It will be the first Major tournament in over two years, with the previous, the StarLadder Major, having taken place in September 2019 in Berlin, Germany.
The Swedish tournament will kick off with the first of three stages on October 26, featuring the 16 teams holding the Challenger or the Contender status. Eight teams with the Legends status will then join the eight best teams in the second stage before the action moves on to the Avicii Arena for the playoffs.
The Regional Major Ranking will determine the 24 teams participating in PGL Major Stockholm, with Europe holding 11 slots, North America five, CIS five, and each of Asia, Oceania, and South America giving out a slot each. The standings will be completed following the conclusion of the final set of qualifying tournaments, all taking place under the IEM Fall banner between September 29-October 10. The European tournament will be the only RMR event to take place on LAN, at an as-yet-undisclosed location.
