FunPlus Phoenix discontinue CS:GO division

The Chinese organization has pulled investment in CS:GO after housing a team for just under a year.

FunPlus Phoenix have announced their departure from CS:GO, citing "limitations and difficulties during remote management" as a reason for the change. The organization has housed a Counter-Strike roster since January 2021, when it acquired the former GODSENT lineup of Jesse "zehN" Linjala, Martin "STYKO" Styk, Pavle "Maden" Bošković, Asger "Farlig" Jensen, and coach Jonatan "Devilwalk" Lundberg.

The team had limited success in the last eleven months, winning a Snow Sweet Snow event near the start of the year and qualifying for IEM Summer, but failing to muster any notable achievements or tournament placements in their larger event appearances.

They also failed to qualify for PGL Major Stockholm after ending up in 14th place on the Europe Regional Major Ranking leaderboard, going out of IEM Fall early in the group stage and placing in ninth in Flashpoint 3.

FPX will no longer house a team in CS:GO

The Chinese organization first made an attempt to enter CS:GO in March 2020 as a partner team in Flashpoint with the signing of Heroic, a venture that later fell through when Patrick "es3tag" Hansen agreed to join Astralis ahead of the expiry of his contract.

With Flashpoint unable to host any offline events since, and the organization not being a Louvre Agreement team, opportunities to compete in larger international events have been slim.

"All our members now are available to explore more options in CS:GO esports," FPX said in their statement. "We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors."

Although the statement is unclear on whether the players are now free agents or still under contract, it is possible that a member may already be on the way out.

A report from Draft5 on Thursday indicates that Astralis may be exploring the possibility of acquiring Farlig to bolster their roster following their exit from PGL Major Stockholm, although with Philip "Lucky" Ewald only joining the team in August, a replacement this soon would come as a surprise.

FunPlus Phoenix had the following lineup:

Finland Jesse "zehN" Linjala
Slovakia Martin "STYKO" Styk
Montenegro Pavle "Maden" Bošković
Denmark Asger "Farlig" Jensen
Serbia Luka "emi" Vuković

It's clear considering the meltdown that happened in their league of legends divison as well that there are either going to be huge changes or FPX is withdrawing from esports in general (unlikely but you never know)

A lot of betting sites had them at the lowest or second lowest odds behind damwon, so the fact that they lost to the third seed of both eu and na and got dead last in the ''group of death'' is disastrous. They also let go of doinb and nuguri, their two arguably best performing players. Tian as well said on stream the team is most likely disbanding, meaning the entire roster is gone

Of course Chinese org trying to pull a major qualification for sticker money and immediately decides to quit after limited success, honestly although it would’ve been better than any other small org the players probably should’ve seen this coming. ChrisJ probably did.

You're likely correct. Fpx has for the most part just settled for whatever they could get that was cheap. Lost interest in Heroic got a meh European team (which wasn't even a full roster when signed just 4 +coach ) The first request that squad wanted was a proper igl with firepower. ChrisJ was picked but was too expensive so they got a cheaper version in emi Their fps projects (VAL/CS) both showed promise but it just seems the org has both no interest and no idea what it should do in this area. Just sorta filling a check and outsourcing this project to some random European they barely heard or cared. When they treat their divisions like this it's no wonder even their crown jewel, LOL, is shitting the bed.

Well you say that, but FPX has got some notable placings in most of their tournaments since their worlds win. No major wins or anything but certainly holding their own in their split. But I'd be skeptical of any Chinese org in CS if they decided to invest in a foreign team. It's just how they do business, and the signs are there when they only pick up 1 general manager to completely run the show. It's unfortunate cause this team definitely had some promise, but they seemed to get worse and worse after every tournament. Hopefully they stick together and find a new org, or at least hopefully a three man core finds a new team.
2021-11-05 11:38
2 replies
As much as I like most of the players historically alone and as team (in particular some of the NoChance lineups) they should not stick together. Historically players only leave their domestic region when either the level of play is weak or there are no worthwhile spots available. This was true for most player in this team at the time. Farlig has a variety of teams back in Denmark that could use a awp and if rumours are believed Astralis are one of them. Styko + Sinners makes sence, would be an upgrade and he already has a deep relation with Oskar from mouseports zehN should replace jemi in Havu as they wanted to get rid of him for quite a while and even got desperate to the point of using a coach (that's how bad jemi was playing) As for maden either a return to the local scene, yet another international project or perhaps joining a team like G2 (Balkan superteam) EMI is the most underwhelming member so I expect his playing career at a decent level to end here. Either he keeps playing as a Berry-like player to nurture talent in the Balkans or he goes back to coaching both being valid options.

I just have a sweet spot for international rosters I guess, and ngl I did actually want FPX stickers xd They needed a better IGL than emi if they ever wanted to go further than tier 2-3 that’s for sure.
2021-11-05 18:24
It's absolutely hilarious how stupid some of the top oriental orgs are. From piss poor management to laying off entire rosters because they didn't go deeper into the tournament despite a promising performance and being eliminated by one of the favourites in a close game, nope, doesn't matter. They need new and better players, those guys are finished.
2021-11-05 11:48
pretty sure the whole org is dissolving, lol team as well

Too bad g2 is doing good in the major, if they continued being shit they would of probably picked up maden and maybe even styko. The way some of the international teams are looking (mouz, faze, OG) and the incoming post major shuffle they should find a home in no time

New danish lineup: Magisk Dupreeh Bubzkji Es3tag Farlig (Zonic coach if he wants too) Havu: -Jemi +Zehn OG: -niko +Styko Maden waits for other roster changes, but he’s good enough to find a new home. Mouz should think of getting someone. Get farlig in place of acor, Torszki is set in NXT, no need to break the momentum of that team.
2021-11-05 08:27
Sinners should Pick Styko and bench Beastik, He struggle a lot with aim lately.
2021-11-05 08:27
3 replies
Yeah, beastik kinda isn't in his best shape right now, but it is important to know that he does the IGL job. And according to the players, he does it good. Also, do not forget that he used to play a star player role in former teams (he used to be recognized as one of the best uprising players on the scene around first V4 Future Festival), one that now stands on NEOFRAG's shoulders. Although such a sharp aimer as STYKO would be really nice improvement, I'm not exactly sure about STYKO's willingness to call. STYKO is indeed very smart and he probably has capabilities for doing the job, but it would be a restart for the team, as they are currently settled on beastik's calling system, which really took some time to sharpen. If STYKO was to replace someone, it would be ZEDKO. I don't say that Jindra isn't good, but he shares the support role, one that STYKO is very familiar with and I would definitely say that STYKO > ZEDKO although ZEDKO still has tremendous qualities. As much as I love Seba (beastik) and his personality, his head together with ZEDKO's may really be first on the chopping block, as there is still one very good caller on Czech scene, stationed in Sinners' rival. You know who I mean. TLDR: If Sinners do some changes, it will be -ZEDKO +STYKO. They will definitely not destroy the work they have been working on the whole year by removing beastik and installing STYKO, who is not a dedicated IGL. Rather than that is possible, that leckr would step into beastik's role, but as I say, I still not believe they would have throw all that time spent on beastik's improvement in IGL role away.

I think that Styko was IGL in FPX when chrisJ was there
2021-11-06 16:19
1 reply
Well, chrisJ was there for few matches and it was actually chris, who was calling. That's why they wanted to pick him up. Because chris used to call when mouz didn't have other callers. Remember that oskar, STYKO, chrisJ core changing the two remaining players I can easily name 4: loWel, dennis, sunny, ropz. And chris was always calling. And that's the reason why they were on a lookout for him and that's the reason why they have signed emi after the chrisJ option have fallen through.

2021-11-05 15:45

Faze will go for higher options if they want to stay in CS. They want stars. OG is a very consistent org, they only do lineup changes if they absolutely think it is necessary. Ence made great development in such a short time and non oi the FPX players is an upgrade. G2 nope, they play with Jackzs cuz they like hom so much that isn't only about csgo skills. and mouz? maybe but depends on the cost and what are the current player wants to do. And actually, only G2 is a team that you can consider as rea tier 1 team. But that is a SUBJECTIV question where Tier1/2 begins. That is a bit random. A final contender is a good sign for tier 1 level.

Astralis should get him instead of nicoodoz anyway. Can't tell how nicoodoz would fit into astralis and he's doing splendid where he is (if it ain't broke don't fix it). Farlig needs the fresh start, and definitely has the potential. It'd be the smarter move for the Danish scene as a whole, if not astralis themselves

i would agree blindly if Flames economy and org. was consolidated. Flames strategy is to bring players to our attention and then sell, sell, sell. I actually hope you are right. I hope that flames will keep their roster together and go for more consistent results. they do have a lineup now that can compete with the best in the world. but also...nicoodoz is their absolut best salesobject right now. and money talks, unfortunately.

None of them are going to valorant, fpx is most likely gonna disband their valo divison as well. By now there are quite a few orgs and players who either switched back to cs or outright disbaned/retired from valo. The grass is always greener on the other site, take an actual look at valo and its not locking all that great over their either

Understandable decision, this team could've been solid Tier 3 team farming up events such as those Snow Sweet Snow cups, but not more than that I feel like. The firepower was simply not there, as a team they had some kind of structure, but it wasn't Tier 1 team when it came to strats or structure anyway. Overall, the players are not bad, maybe outside of emi who seems really unstable, and I think they can achieve more split rather than together. GL moving further guys.
