G2 part ways with maLeK *

The 35-year-old coach will be in search of other opportunities after a three-year tenure with the organisation.

* Update: G2's analyst, Jan "⁠Swani⁠" Müller, will be taking over the position of the team's head coach for the time being.

G2 have parted ways with Damien "⁠maLeK⁠" Marcel, the organisation announced on Tuesday. The French coach has been a part of G2 for three years, and notably coached previous rosters to first-place finishes in Champions Cup Finals and Good Game League in 2019.

However, Big Event trophies have eluded the organisation throughout maLeK's tenure, with the team having a number of their high-profile event appearances put to a halt at the final hurdle, including runner-up finishes at ESL Pro League Season 9, IEM Katowice 2020, and IEM Cologne 2021.

maLeK has been a part of G2 since November 2018

Despite recovering from lackluster online form upon returning to LAN at PGL Major Stockholm, where G2 had a resurgence off the back of a stellar showing from Nikola "⁠NiKo⁠" Kovač, the team still found themselves unable to net a trophy win, falling to a masterclass performance from Oleksandr "⁠s1mple⁠" Kostyliev and Natus Vincere in the grand final.

maLeK's removal was planned prior to the team's appearance in Stockholm, a change which now leaves G2 without a coach heading into the post-Major shuffle.

According to a report from 1pv.fr, G2 are considering Luka "⁠emi⁠" Vuković as a replacement for maLeK. The Serbian has most recently represented FunPlus Phoenix, but has history playing with or coaching all three of Nemanja "⁠nexa⁠" Isaković, Nemanja "⁠huNter-⁠" Kovač, and NiKo. The same outlet noted that G2 are looking to change "one or two players for 2022", with an AWPer and an IGL on the shopping list.

Hm Malek should they really? 2nd place with the current lineup was sweet. Only thing that could be a potential was to get zywoo or get kennyS back in the active rooster. instead of either jacks/amanek/nexa. Amanek showed great stage resistance. as did the others but somehow he stood out to me. Its like impossible to make a cut in this rooster. with the form they showed I guess it shouldnt have to be but they need another besides niko God form, if they want to win the big thropies. But the coach, they probably will get XQTZZX or whats his name.

Says they are looking for an AWP and an IGL. Wouldn’t that mean -AmaNEk/JaCkz and -nexa? I could see AmaNEk being kept, he’s a great support player, even if he isn’t the best at any of the roles. Without nexa IGL, I don’t understand where he fits in, except the friend of NiKo and huNter.

It is maybe for the story-telling (market-wise) or they still negotiated with players. It was expected in some ways, but Amanek' and Jackz' values are underated. Sure, they can get good balkan players, like Maden or Poizon, but who's gonna play the bitch roles like Amanek and Jackz did. Will Niko and Hunter give space for the awper ? I really doubt so. Also, Malek < Kassad/Emi/Letn. All three are big question marks. I don't see any good in FPX/Contact/Extremum projects. Finally, it is a sad week for the french scene. It's bullshit that orgs/players in eSports don't want to put in the hard work to make things work and fix issues and instead quickly jump to making roster changes as the only instant solution.

Kassad is the best coach available, they can still get Emi, but as secondary coach or analyst maybe. If they're looking to build a Balkan super-team the AWPer at high level has to be Poizon, but I think there is no better Balkan IGL than Nexa, they would have to look elsewhere, to either AleksiB or Tabsen. Gla1ve won't be it because he recently re-signed to Astralis, ALEX recently joined Fnatic. One more option would be CadiaN as IGL and AWP combined and either keeping Jackz or Amanek or adding Styko as a hard-support. Whatever they do, I don't see them surpassing Na'Vi, the only thing they can gain is more consistency in their second place results.

I want to correct myself: CerQ is also an option for G2, he has been a little inconsistent as of late, but that's probably demotivation due to being on a bad team. He was insane a few years ago, and EG has nothing in CS, so CerQ should be cheap.

Maden is not good enough for tier 1, but if they're willing to spend the big bucks, Ropz would be a great entry, that's what he played as all the way at the start. But a support would be a better pick-up, which could also be Ropz, or Frozen, or Styko, either way they'd get a Mouz player, hahah.

I agree, but they're the only possible clear upgrades to Nexa as IGL. I was going to say AleksiB wouldn't want to play a big ego again, but NiKo really improved in that regard. AleksiB would get a better team and maybe better salary too, but I'm not sure he'd want to join. Tabsen is more of a German-hardliner, so he's not leaving BIG, but he would be good. But do you have another option? Which IGL: who's not old (like Karrigan or Apex) AND who didn't sign in the last half year (like Gla1ve or ALEX) AND knows English (unlike Nafany or Jame) AND is better than Nexa (unlike Hampus or Doto) is an option for G2? It's AleksiB, Tabsen, Cadian. That's it. Side-note, Cadian got top 4 in the major, he probably doesn't immediately want to leave the best all-Danish team. So they probably won't get him either. Between those three I feel like AleksiB is actually the most likely.

In a good system he'd be good, Complexity was a shitshow once oBo left. Not his fault the team was ass and constantly rotating out players, he's a good AWPer. He literally had to play entry/AWP because Blame, JKS, and Cold refused to entry

I agree with the second part of being entry but at the same time he refused to watch demos with the team and that affected their whole 'system'. On T side you can argue he was doing fine job but nothing can defend his CT sides where as an awper he cant have regular negative ratings and so often dying so unnecessary

I didnt know he refused to watch VOD's tbh, that's unacceptable. Was this near the end of his run with Complexity? I can see him saying fuck it if he knew he was leaving and not caring anymore (either way that's not acceptable). I agree he made some bad plays on CT too, unnecessary pushing is my biggest pet peeve. My logic is in a structured team like G2 he wouldn't feel the need to get aggressive and try to make hero plays because the Kovacs would be the ones doing that

That is Niko logic. That is why he thought NEO and Adren would be good IGL for Faze or why he thinks about himself that he is a better IGL than GobB and Karrigan. He also thought he can play AWP when they kicked kennyS. Delusional will never win a Major or any other important tournament when there is nobody who set him rules.

So, considering G2 removes a few players now, I believe the best idea would be to rebuild around Niko and Hunter. They need an AWPer, in place of amanek, if Nexa becomes a dissatisfactory IGL, they need an IGL. They need a replacement for Jackz, for a better support player, unless Nexa goes for IGL+support.
