s1mple on new goals: "I'd be happy with a few more Majors and one more Grand Slam"

The PGL Major Stockholm MVP doesn't plan to slow down any time soon.

Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev joined the HLTV Confirmed podcast for the first time to share his thoughts and experiences in a long-form interview. The Ukrainian talked about Natus Vincere's Major run, the rivalry with Gambit, his teammates, and what his aim is after finally lifting a Major trophy.

"Maybe NAVI won't have four Majors, because it is hard to win four Majors in a row," s1mple said through a laugh. "But I'd be happy with a few more Majors and one more Intel Grand Slam. [To become] the first team to win two Grand Slams."

Regular host Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill followed up by asking about what drives the player with 17 MVP awards, and now a Major trophy, to still work so hard. "What else to do? (laughs) I enjoy it. A big motivation is LANs coming back, audience, people, the crowd."

s1mple described Perfecto as a "genius"

Talking about the historic, undefeated run to the PGL Major title, s1mple says he was constantly aware of previous Majors, and how easy it is to lose them.

"It felt like we deserved it the most. Everyone was saying it was NAVI's Major, but when you play, you are always ready that the enemy team can do big damage and you can easily lose - because it is only one game. And you don't want to f*ck up this one game because you don't know when the next opportunity is going to be."

s1mple also spoke about his teammates, shedding light on the two newest additions to Natus Vincere in particular: Valeriy "b1t" Vakhovskiy and Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy.

"B1T has so much confidence because of the system B1ad3 and NAVI made," he explained, adding that the 18-year-old takes criticism well, is calm, focused, and motivated. "As I said, he is a prodigy. It is hard to find players like him."

A lot of praise went Perfecto's way as well. "I think Perfecto is a genius. Our sports psychologist always says he is a genius. He is reading clutch situations really good." s1mple compared him with Spencer "Hiko" Martin in the clutch, explaining that both players gave him new ideas of how to play late-round scenarios. "Perfecto is very smart, outside of the game as well."

It is time for m0nesy to play for a better team, s1mple thinks

An unavoidable topic was NAVI Junior's star AWPer Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov. While s1mple admits that he doesn't know the youngster too well, he agrees that the 16-year-old has shown a lot of potential and could be ready for the next step.

"I'd recommend him to ask for a one-year loan move because in the future he will definitely deserve to play for NAVI’s main team, You never know what will happen in the future. Maybe someone will decide to finish his career or something like that.

"He needs to get some more experience against better teams. In his place, I'd go somewhere for a year to play and see what happens."

s1mple says that m0NESY's English could be better, and that is where a loan would help. SPUNJ questioned whether his organization would be willing to offer the services of their emerging star to another team, but s1mple was confident that NAVI would say yes as they "always help the players."

The topic of Natus Vincere's biggest rival was also touched upon in the two hour show, with s1mple being confident that Gambit are still their biggest challengers. He puts down the one-sided Major semi-final to lack of experience and Natus Vincere understanding their opponents' playstyle after facing off so many times this year. "I feel like with a bit more experience on stage they will definitely play better, like in Cologne where there was no crowd."

s1mple spoke about his rumored break after winning a Major, once again clarifying that he will surely play out at least the rest of 2021, before addressing a touchy subject for many Counter-Strike fans.

"Not right now," said about a potential switch to VALORANT. It could happen, but only "when I understand that I did a lot in this game. When I achieved a lot, and I'm slowly losing fun."

"I want to achieve a lot for this organization. I want to give space to young players so that [after I quit] other organizations cannot catch up on NAVI for three years."

Winning major is team's achievement so after 7 years his team is so good & he got trophy. Astralis had synergy & all players are in form. There was no need to carry 1 player always. So, Astralis won 4 majors. Let's see NAVI's consistency. Anyway, I happy for s1mple. He is really good player. How difficult to stay with one organization for 5 years & win a major. He has spirit & he really love CSGO. He is real one of the best dedicated player.

You don't think he can do that? I mean, I don't think he will win 4 majors like Astralis but I think winning 2 or maybe even 3 is realistic. The guy is only 24 and NaVi is one of the youngest teams around. It all depends on the covid situation though. I think he would have 2 majors by now if Covid wasn't a thing.

I think they can win the rest of the tournaments this year, for now teams are pretty fucked up.The real shit will begin next year when everyone will slowly get back in business. And if they do win all the tournaments this year in the same form they had in the last months they will make history.Even if they have only 1 major.NaVi is already a legendary org / team, so...
2021-11-17 09:50
The parallels between this Navi and old Astralis are readily apparent if you just look closely. It's certainly reasonable for them to win another major, and possibly another grand slam, if their level doesn't dip. 4 majors is kind of a tall ask, but some of that is less about their level and more about the amount of time needed to do it.
2021-11-16 22:19
8 replies
Yea to much can change in the time it's needed to win 4 majors, especially if they stay at 1 a year, for us to speculate to much. They will obviously be title favorites for the foreseeable future but this is also new age CS. Navi are obviously the best (just like Astralis were) but unlike when Astralis first started the teams in the top 10 are better now. Not necessarily in the skill department but just in playing the game. Not only has the game evolved where more people are smarter in game (which help of coaches and other departments with-in their ORG) but players are making more money now which has really allowed them to say "THIS IS MY JOB". Part of why PGL was so good, imo, was the crazy talent of teams outside the top10. Wasn't just all aim no brain kind of stuff... truly some great teamwork from lower level teams.
2021-11-17 00:25
2 replies
Yup. Pretty much agreed. I will say I don't think teams are tremendously smarter, but Astralis definitely forced all the other teams to play much more team-based. I think old Astralis could still contend with current Navi, but they're very similar teams in terms of roles and function. Astralis were always more tactical than Navi, but I think Navi's current skill level is higher.
2021-11-17 02:43
1 reply
For sure. Astralis was just ahead of their time so they would easily mesh in this ERA. Even a team like BIG, although not on the level of those Astralis/Navi, was a bit ahead of their time with their killer use of utility. Suppose I worded it wrong though as what I was trying to say is that the amount of teams are significantly more in terms of playing more polished CS so even though NAVI is clearly number 1 right now there are, imo, more teams that can realistically beat them in a bo3 compared to the Astralis era. That's in no way to say I think NAVI are beatable though. They can very well still win a grand slam.
2021-11-17 02:51
The point is that 2022 all teams will be better organized, Astralis, Vitality, G2. You have to be very deluded to think that Navi will win another grandslam, something that not even Astralis did, and another major.
2021-11-17 01:10
4 replies
Astralis not winning a 2nd Grand Slam is because they had a very strong Liquid team behind them, so Liquid filled the gap for the brief point where they fell off at the start of 2019. Currently Navi have no clear top 2 team behind them beating everyone else, but losing to them. Even in 2022 it's silly to think new rosters are going to be better composed than a team that's been together as long as the current Navi has. Whether they win the grand slam again or not doesn't really matter, but at the moment no other team is as well balanced as Navi. It would be naive to believe they are incapable of winning it a second time at the level they're at. Thinking they can't win another major is especially silly, so long as the team sticks together. If s1mple takes a break, or they cut someone/lose someone it's a different story.

When Liquid started 2019 and won the Grand Slam it was after beating Astralis for the first time. Astralis fell off pretty notably until the major, and then came right back to their former status. It's not about them playing less, really, just sort of circumstances.

I think G2 played to their absolute limit. Same with Heroic that stepped up massively against VP and almost won against G2. Maybe only Gambit played worse than they should. So yeah, I don't think you are making a good point here. Just trying to downgrade navi's achievement
2021-11-16 23:43

?? I literally just said that Na’Vi did a good job… ( oh wait that was another comment, shit man ) However i’m not trying to ‘’downgrade’’ Na’Vi’s achievement, they deserved the win… But the performance by all the other teams was 50/50, sometimes good, sometimes bad On a good day, Gambit, NIP and Heroic could’ve beaten Na’Vi or make it to finals, it’s just that none of the teams had that, G2 only got into finals because of Niko and Hunter, rest of the team did jackshit and didn’t even deserve to be in playoffs
2021-11-17 00:43
Gambit objectively played worse than vitality. Idk if u even watched any games! G2 overperformed. Nip was decent. Heroic was strong. CHF was really good. Only teams that fell off were astralis and liquid tbh.
2021-11-17 11:51
"They played like shit" because NaVi made them look foolish as they were 1 League above anyone else.. very s1mple outcome
2021-11-17 20:58
In which major did the winning team have the strongest opposition?
2021-11-18 19:12
hltv ranking shows form of the team, its not real ranking. If u think that NiP is good for # 2 spot then that is sad. I agree with the rest
2021-11-17 01:01
I was shocked to see Gambit in the same bracket as Navi, denying us of the grand final we all predicted. Do you think heroic would have given Navi a harder time than G2

Teams that went 3-0 in Swiss format were placed in different brackets. Gambit shouldn't have lost that game to Entropiq. As we know now, Gambit wasn't ready for audience yet so maybe it was for the best they didn't meet Navi in Grand final.

You know you were a good player for your team when s1mple respects you enough to discuss your skill years later. He's also not wrong, perfecto is that rare, consistent clutch player like flusha, Hiko or Xyp9x.

Astralis won only 2 majors in their era, first major was with kjaerbye, last major was in 2019, before that liquid were dominating few months, then we had mouz winning all big tourneys in the end of 2019

I mean when they pushed with pistols, I think it was the same round NiKo missed, and nexa was shooting in one player, but randomly killed another in smoke so NiKo miss kinda was evening the odds
2021-11-17 10:48
The same Niko deagle whiff round that you are referring to, was an eco/force-buy round, where Nexa got kills through the smoke. That is why the situation even reached that point. Otherwise, it would have been a regular crushing.

"bro, you look so salty for everything he said." The only one that looks too salty is you, man. I just said that he is deluding himself that 2022 onwards will be the same thing as 2021. Vitality now has dupreeh magisk and zonic, Astralis has blameF and k0nfig, wake up to reality. Had it not been for that mistake by Niko Deagle, the g2 would have beaten the major.

Let's be real CIS teams will dominate for some more time still too late to be the last Major for s1mple and NAVI in general especially now after they tasted one Major I'm sure they will not stop now after all they are the best team in the world right now and still holding it meanwhile the other teams are having some big change especially the bigger teams like Astralis, Vitality, G2 etc gonna take them quite some time to get used to new rosters meanwhile NAVI have that stability and confidence it's going to be really hard to compete against them in every tournament Majors included
2021-11-17 02:43
not gonna happen....dupreeh will become the only player is the csgo history to lift his 5th major trophy with vitality.

As it should be? Esports at the top level is as professional and result oriented as it gets. Groups of friends where everyone is "having fun" rarely win anything. Finnish CS should be the prime example.

Who talked about next year? The goals are obviously set for the remainder of his career. I think s1mple still has +5 years at top level and probably 2 years at his current peak form. Plenty of time to win stuff. Especially if in 2022 things will go back to normal and we will have 2 majors a year as per usual.

2021-11-18 14:15
I mean S1mple is the best player to ever touch CSGO no doubt, but in order to be the GOAT you need to do more than be the best in the game, look at Mohammad Ali, he is the goat of all times of boxing, but he aint the one putting down the biggest numbers, he did most for his sport. S1mple did nothing to csgo, except being toxic and a fucking p1mple face. now he win major and realise he must be more humble, but tbh it may be to late to win not just only ruski and fucking eastern european hearts in the game and outside the game. it takes more to be the GOAT.
