s1mple: "Only when we are playing great CS I can show what I'm capable of"

We spoke to Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev after he was crowned the Most Valuable Player of BLAST Premier Fall Final.

Natus Vincere emerged victorious from BLAST Premier Fall Final after not dropping a series in the double-elimination bracket, with their tournament run culminating in a three-map victory over Vitality, who ended the CIS team's 20-game winstreak on Nuke.

s1mple ended the grand final with a 76-46 K-D

After the match, HLTV caught up with s1mple for a brief interview and to hand him his MVP medal, which he earned after ending the tournament as the highest-rated player (1.39 rating).

The Ukrainian star shared his thoughts on tying device's record for most MVPs won in a year, and described what NAVI's goals are heading into their last tournament of the year, the BLAST Premier Global Final.

This is your ninth title of year, and the fourth in a row on LAN, how are you feeling coming out of that series?

I'm feeling good, feeling well deserved. So many teams have started reshuffling, like what happened when Astralis was dominating, so we just want to try to use our chance to win more trophies while we have really good form.

Your winstreak on Nuke got ended during this grand final. What happened on that map, and does it take some of the pressure off now that you don't have to worry about holding on to that streak?

It took some pressure off after we lost it I guess, because I was mad not that we lost, but how we lost, because our game plan was wrong I think. I'm really happy that we had the chance to discuss it, to forget about this Nuke, to remove this pressure and just play our A+ or S game on Inferno.

Boombl4 has said that you need two more tournament wins to start your era. You have one here now, and then you have the BLAST Global Final coming up. Is that also what starts the NAVI era in your mind?

People I think will realize when it starts. I think we can do even more to say that we started an era, you know? Like for example, I remember how Astralis won three LAN tournaments in a row, how NAVI 2018 won three LANs, but when you've got five or six, that's when an era starts, especially LAN tournaments. So our next goal will be to win even more in a row.

Going into BLAST, what sort of preparation are you going to have, because teams are obviously preparing hard against you?

We're just going to have a break for one week as always, because we didn't have a lot of time after the Major, and we're just going to prepare like we usually do. Maybe we'll do some bootcamp again, but who knows. We'll be ready for the next BLAST Finals.

This is your 18th MVP, you've now tied device's record for most number of MVPs in a year, and you're one away from tying him for overall number of MVPs. How does that feel?

It feels good. I wanted B1T or maybe electronic to get it, but after I thought we need to break this record you know, or at least tie it. My whole team, only because of my team I played so good right now.

Only when we are playing great CS I can show what I'm capable of. Everything is thanks to my team and organization, without them I wouldn't get one... okay maybe one, but still. Just big work, all of us are doing 100% work to achieve what we achieved now.

Navi are on a really strong streak right now, they are very likely the new team to beat in terms of dominance over the whole team, though I wonder if it will last especially with a new Vitality around the corner.

Vitality will surely undergo the foreseen roster changes, which means they'll need some time to adjust and create a good game plan. In a few months we'll see what the new roster is capable of.

That's where NAVI is going to strike again while rest of the teams looking to adjust due to new roasters NAVI still has that stability and confidence maybe in the upcoming tournaments only Astralis who are going to show some resistance maybe some of Heroic too, but that's going to be it the rest wouldn't touch NAVI or make them sweat even for a little.

That's why the NAVI players said that a win at the BLAST Global Final would cement the NAVI era; after that tournament, the big shuffle will happen and only a few top teams will keep the same rosters. It is the perfect opportunity for NAVI to keep racking up wins and trophies.

Ye bro did you hear Boobl4 interveiw with Banks after the win? he said we are not done yet we are going to continue, s1mple as well he said it differently to Spunj and Maniac and Freya that means NAVI will rock for some more time that's for sure like why not take the advantage? you're the BEST team right now it's confirmed all teams fear you and do not know yet how to outplay you, go win some more tournaments while you still can it's sure not going to last forever.

Yes, I saw both interviews; it is clear that the guys don't have any intentions of slowing down, and with B1ade behind them always making sure they keep their near-perfect form, it is going to be extremely difficult for the competition to catch up.
2021-11-29 02:10

What's more difficult to beat in this NAVI team right now is the confidence they having, it's huge man, after losing brutally on Nuke, their map pick Vitality quickly received the message on Inferno they took a real beating I didn't recognize Vitality again it looked like a whole different team was playing on Inferno than the one played on Nuke like wtf that's all cuz of the meeting NAVI did after losing their map pick, they said to themselves we are the Champions, we need to prove it and they did, I liked their reaction on Inferno they brutalized Vitality it was a quick game it didn't look like a final game at all on the decider map was amazing tbh.
2021-11-29 02:17
It sure will last NAVI playing different CS a more aggressive CS and that's unexpected from other teams, they don't follow the usual rules of CS that's why no team could beat them and end their winning streak they like to control the map, win all duels, give 0 respect in eco rounds and push they make it look easy and random like you're watching some MM game not Major or anything like it, the decider map in Inferno proved that they played so aggressive in CT side while generally in CS it's known that teams in CT side they play the more passive CS, wait and hold angles, did you see electronic challenging whole Vitality in mid with AUG? pushing banana and Boobl4 controlling it every single round and that's what fked Vitality up so aggressive CS and ofcourse their aim always on point they don't fkn miss a shot always been NAVI style not to mention that NAVI was the first team ever to break Astralis and end Astralis dominance in the past while Astralis style was slow and accurate, NAVI chose the aggressive CS, playing randomly s1mple pushing mid with AWP and slaughtering entire Astralis team all alone etc not forget that NAVI coach who figured out the way Astralis play and he was the first one to defuse their gaming code after that all teams followed that way and Astralis became just an ordinary team again, but now who is going to counter NAVI style and outplay them? that's a big interrogation point.
2021-11-29 01:45
that new vitality line up looks very, very underwhelming. Lack of firepower (they're good players, but not for today's standards)

I think zywoo Dupree Magisk is a bit weaker than electronic s1mple and bit. Specifically because of bit turning into a top 5 player all of the sudden for the past 6 months. If misuuta develops into a really good player which he's shown potential to be before, and if apex keeps up recent form that might make those 2 be the little extra they need
2021-11-29 12:09
New vitality with 2 washed up danes who are not even top 30 players right now. Switching comms to english and nobody in the team didnt have any experience in international roster. They will need at least a year to get their comms right.

I been seeing s1mple playing since Liquid time never seen toxicity from him tbh maybe he is with his team that could be the case and that's understandable, but in general he is always humble, shy expressing himself maybe his confidence and the way he expresses himself makes it look that way I mean put yourself in his place when you have to deal with all that pressure, fear of losing, pressure of the fans who been waiting etc at some point when you succeed at the end it's all natural you'd look that way just because you said something for fun to amuse the spectators some takes it personal and would sees it as toxic, but deep inside we all know s1mple isn't anything like that let's face it.

They'll probably be online. There's no location for them yet and many players said they don't know if the events will be on LAN. That's a red flag, because they'd be the first ones to know. S1mple said it on the recent vlog that this Blast could've been the last LAN tournament of the year so he wanted to enjoy it. Fallen also said something similar. Idk, what is happening with covid in Europe, but this sucks.
