Top 20 players of 2021: EliGE (19)

Strong performances against the very best teams and consistent impact in matches earns Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski his fifth consecutive placement on the top 20 players list, powered by GG.BET.

Top 20 players of 2021: Introduction

EliGE gained early Counter-Strike experience as a casual player of 1.6, but truly began sinking his teeth into the competitive side of esports with Starcraft 2, a real-time strategy game that he played for nearly three years before shifting his focus to CS:GO after the beta period, diving head-first into the title in 2013. Just 15-years-old at the time, the young talent quickly rose through the ranks in North America, playing in CEVO Professional and ESEA Premier on Justus Pro with Peter "ptr" Gurney before later making the move to ELEVATE, joining David "Xp3" Garrido and William "RUSH" Wierzba.

Alongside the pair, EliGE placed 3-4th at his first international event, Clutchcon 2015, beating Tarik "tarik" Celik's CLG in the quarter-finals before losing to Cloud9. Just two months later, he made the move to the team where he has spent the rest of his career to date, replacing Keith "NAF" Markovic on Liquid. Though results didn't pour in immediately, the experience competing in a top team proved crucial as EliGE's growth as an individual was exponential, with him attending his first Major, DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca, just seven months later.

EliGE made it to the semi-final of his second-ever Major at MLG Columbus in April 2016

A group stage exit at that tournament gave way to a semi-final run in EliGE's next Major appearance, MLG Columbus, playing next to Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev in a Liquid lineup that had their tournament run end in heartbreak following a historic series against Luminosity, the eventual champions.

The Brazilian team continued to play spoiler to Liquid at ESL One Cologne 2016 just three months later, where they made a run to the grand final off the back off stellar form from s1mple, and where EliGE began to showcase his own star potential with a 1.15 rating over 11 maps, something which he built on the following year after the Ukrainian AWPer's departure from the lineup.

2017 marked EliGE's first appearance in the top 20 player ranking, coming in at No.12 after he was a consistent force for Liquid alongside Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken throughout the year, helping lead the way to runner-up finishes at ESG Tour Mykonos and ESL One New York.

Liquid were the runner-ups at ESL One New York 2017

The team's results continued to improve in 2018 following the addition of NAF, and it was the trio of North Americans who combined to grant the team their first international titles, winning cs_summit 2 and SuperNova CS:GO Malta over Cloud9 and NRG, respectively. Epitacio "TACO" de Melo rounding out the roster also proved key in helping the team secure the latter title as well as additional runner-up finishes at ESL Pro League Season 7 and Season 8 Finals, ECS Season 5 Finals, ELEAGUE Premier, ESL New York, and IEM Chicago, with EliGE once again earn a spot among the top 20, ending 2018 as the 15th best player in the world.

Despite establishing themselves as the clear number two team in the world, only faltering to an era-defining Astralis, Liquid went into 2019 determined to overcome the Danish team and take home Big Event titles. It was Jake "Stewie2K" Yip joining the roster in place of TACO that set off an explosive year for the team, during which they took home seven trophies, won the Intel Grand Slam in a record-setting 63 days, became the No.1 team in the world, and managed five additional grand final appearances. EliGE was once again a pivotal force in Liquid's run, netting himself three tournament MVPs while averaging a 1.21 rating and 1.30 Impact rating, having his best individual year to be crowned the 4th best player of 2019.

Despite suffering a dip in form toward the end of the previous year, Liquid still entered 2020 as firm contenders. EliGE continued to showcase strong individual form, even in the team's 5-6th place elimination at IEM Katowice, and carried that momentum into a win in Liquid's first online event of the year, ESL Pro League Season 11 North America, but things turned sour fast once the online era truly got underway.

EliGE's individual ability continued to shine, but it wasn't enough to keep a sinking Liquid ship afloat as they were continually ousted from domestic events by FURIA, Evil Geniuses, and 100 Thieves, the team's competitive mindset affected heavily by the move to solely online play. Changes in the August off-season brought about the addition of Michael "Grim" Wince and departure of Nick "nitr0" Cannella, EliGE's long-time teammate of five years, as well as a change in coaching staff as Eric "adreN" Hoag was replaced by Jason "moses" O'Toole. Tournament victories still continued to elude the team for the remainder of the year, though, despite reliable impact from EliGE, who scored his fourth consecutive appearance in the top 20 players list, this time coming in at No.8.

Liquid's final event of 2020, IEM Global Challenge, also saw Twistzz's time on the team come to an end, with Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo taking his place as the new year got underway. The Brazilian veteran was brought on to take up AWP duties, a role that the team had been juggling between NAF and Stewie2K since nitr0's departure, as well as to eventually take up the reigns as in-game leader, although initially it was a shared effort between EliGE and Stewie2K as FalleN worked to integrate into Liquid's system.

"The goal was to tie everything together with FalleN at the helm of the team. FalleN filled everything that we needed at the time to complete the roster, which was an experienced IGL, an AWPer, and a really positive personality to bring us to the next level. We were struggling at the end of 2020 and we felt like we needed to check atleast one of the boxes off (IGL or AWP), and having FalleN come into the team to fulfill both of those roles was the perfect piece. FalleN wasn't immediately going to be IGLing, but I think that we thought it would end up happening when he got comfortable in the team."

FalleN seemed like the perfect fit for Liquid at the start of 2021

The BLAST Global Final kicked off as a slow start to the year for EliGE individually as he recorded a 1.07 rating and 1.10 impact rating, although Liquid managed respectable victories over Natus Vincere and Evil Geniuses before bowing out in fourth place. EliGE continued to experience a dip in form at the BLAST Spring Groups, with Liquid getting sent to the Showdown after being battered by FaZe in two best-of-threes — early retribution from Twistzz.

Things turned around at the first Elite event of the year, IEM Katowice, where EliGE looked revitalized as Liquid kicked off their run in the Play-In stage, beating MIBR and OG to secure a berth to the main event. There, EliGE was the driving force in a flawless group stage as Liquid were able to exact revenge over FaZe in their opening match before beating Vitality and Natus Vincere to advance directly to the semi-finals of the playoff stage. However, after a nearly week-long break between the group stage and their semi-final against Virtus.pro, Liquid reentered the server unable to showcase the same level, and they fell flat against the CIS side to end their tournament run in 3-4th place.

"We had a really good start to the year with those events, especially Katowice where we beat a lot of good teams and made it to the semis. I remember our cohesion against NAVI where it felt really good and our teamplay was on point for us during those games. I think that we came in swinging and our confidence was at a high point since we were at the very beginning and having a good start beating really strong teams.

"I would say the beginning of the year at Katowice was the best part of 2021 for me since it was the tournament where everything felt the most cohesive and it was one of the better tournaments we had for the year."

Liquid had a solid run of form in IEM Katowice, besting NAVI to advance to the semi-final

Still, EliGE's performance in the group stage and consistency throughout the tournament (1.18 rating, 1.25 impact rating, 83.6 ADR) was enough to earn him his first Exceptionally Valuable Player (EVP) mention of the year, form that he carried through into ESL Pro League Season 13 the following month. Again, EliGE was Liquid's highest-rated player as they secured a spot in the playoffs of the event after ending their group with a 4-1 record, dropping only a single series to Astralis, but they were unable to pull off a deep tournament run as they were felled by G2 in the first round of playoffs, exiting in 9-12th.

A return home for DreamHack Open March North America offered Liquid a prime opportunity to boost their confidence after a rather up-and-down start to the year, but it proved to be anything but that as the team crashed out of the domestic competition in 3-4th place, falling to paiN despite an outstanding tournament from EliGE where he notched a 1.34 rating, 1.40 impact rating, and 98.6 ADR over 7 maps in the tournament. An early elimination from the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown added insult to injury as Liquid were left sitting on the sidelines from BLAST's culminatory event for the first half of the year, but they were given brief solace following a first place finish at cs_summit 8, North America's first Regional Major Ranking event of the year, in what would go on to be the only title the team would take home in 2021.

EliGE's hot form cooled off at one of the most crucial moments as the first half of the year drew to a close, the long-awaited return to LAN at IEM Cologne going awry for a Liquid who previously spoke of their struggles online and one that had been eagerly awaiting offline play once again. An opening loss to NIP had Liquid sitting in the lower bracket of Group A before they knew it, and despite a win over MOUZ, the North American side proved unable to push through to the playoffs, faltering in their ensuing series to BIG as EliGE was left with a dismal 0.97 rating, one of only three events in which he averaged below 1.00 this year. It also became evident that there were problems within the Liquid camp, with in-game leadership duties trading off between Stewie2K and FalleN and the return of adreN to the coaching role unable to help resolve the problem.

"The main issues were getting everyone on the same page and also our flip flopping with the IGL role. There were reasons for it at the time, but it definitely was silly and it wasn't logically being handed over each time. We started off with Stewie IGLing when FalleN first came in so he could focus on AWPing and we eventually transitioned, but Stewie was doing a good job so we kept at that for a while. Then, we started having some problems and since FalleN already was an IGL and he could always lead if needed, he stepped into it. I think at that point when we swapped it that first time we needed to keep at it and not do what we did because it ended up being really silly."

Stewie2K and FalleN trading in-game leadership duties back and forth caused issues in Liquid

The player break and return to online play for ESL Pro League Season 14 offered signs of life for Liquid, who once again had a solid group stage as they lost only a single series, falling to Gambit but picking up victories over NIP and FURIA in the process. This time, they managed to take a win in their opening round of playoffs and were on the cusp of advancing to the semi-finals but ultimately fell to Heroic after a tense best-of-three that ended with a soul-crushing 1vs5 clutch from Ismail "refrezh" Ali to force overtime, with Heroic taking the map and series over the line. Despite the loss, EliGE netted himself his second EVP after another standout event, averaging a 1.14 rating across 17 maps while mustering a 1.22 impact rating and 83.4 ADR.

The ensuing months were a grind for Liquid as they missed out on securing a spot at the BLAST Fall Final via the Groups, travelled back to North America for IEM Fall to qualify for PGL Major Stockholm, and then once again returned to Europe to play in the BLAST Fall Showdown, beating 9z, Virtus.pro, and MAD Lions to earn a berth to the LAN final in Copenhagen.

"It [the period after the tournament break] wasn't the absolute worst but, I think the loss to Astralis [in BLAST Fall Groups] was really rough because it made us get knocked out of BLAST and have to go to the Showdown. As soon as that happened, our reset time in the US got cut a lot shorter, so right after we finished our RMR games we had to go to the Showdown the day after. We played well at the Showdown and were able to qualify for BLAST [Fall Final], but now we were going to have quite a long stretch before the Major I believe since it made the most sense to be bootcamping in EU the whole rest of the way up until the Major.

"I think that we went into the Major thinking that it could be possible we are firing on all cylinders, but it would have to be one of those tournaments where everything clicks for it to be possible, which ended up not happening unfortunately."

Sure enough, the stars didn't align for Liquid in Stockholm as they were eliminated in 12-14th during the Swiss Legends stage, only scoring a single win over ENCE and suffering losses to Entropiq, FURIA, and FaZe. Mere weeks after the event, reports and interviews began pointing towards turmoil in the Liquid camp, and it became clear a majority of the players would depart the roster by the end of the year, with only EliGE confirmed to stay on at the time. 5-6th and 7-8th finishes at the Fall Final and IEM Winter, respectively, knocked two final nails in the Liquid coffin, but their final send off at the BLAST World Final was more respectable as they beat Natus Vincere and Astralis before faltering in a rematch against s1mple's side, bringing about an end to the roster's time together with a fourth place finish.

"I am a type of player that likes to have a good game plan of how I want to play and react to certain things and with the way that it was the last couple of events, it wasn't going to be possible. I played to the best of my abilities for those events and focused on my mental game, but I definitely think individually it was hard for me to perform. The meta is always changing and people are coming up with new solutions for how you were playing weeks ago, so if you aren't keeping up with those adaptations then you are going to be left behind.

"It [the amount of time spent in Europe] has been the biggest problem for me personally and something I knew was going to be difficult when I saw the schedule at the end of 2020. I knew that I needed something to help me deal with it, but nothing ever came to fruition and it was weighing on me a lot the entire year not knowing what to do about it. It made it harder for me to deal with problems that ended up coming up and overall affected my mentality. It was the main factor that made me as a player and teammate dip below the standard that is set for me and, thankfully, it won't be a factor anymore and I can focus on being the best that I can be inside and outside the game now.

"Personal goals for me in 2022 are to become the best teammate I possibly can and work on all of the problems that I had in 2021. It will definitely be a process that will take some time, but it is something that I am well aware of and will be constantly trying to work on. I want to start the year off strong and I am going to make sure I devote as much time as possible to developing myself further inside and outside the game."

The match against NAVI at the BLAST World Final marked this Liquid roster's final game together

Why was EliGE the 19th best player of 2021?

Unlike previous years, EliGE's spot in the top 20 wasn't guaranteed in 2021 nor able to be predicted in advance. However, he still had several standout events, namely EVP performances in IEM Katowice and ESL Pro League Season 14, and maintained consistency against top tier opposition, rarely having a bad map (holding a 0.85 or above rating in 89% of his maps, 9th highest). He also sported a 1.10 rating in his 40 maps versus top five teams, the 12th highest among all players, two key factors that played a part in distinguishing him from other tough competitors vying for a spot on the list.

Despite a year with a lower overall level from his norm, EliGE still managed to contribute in statistics he previously had strong impact in — dealing a lot of damage (80.6 per round, #12) and getting opening kills (0.13 per round, #11). He also stood out in a handful of other categories, mustering a 1.17 impact rating (13th highest) and contributing with one or more kills in 48.7% of his rounds (#13).

Ultimately though, the lack of strong peaks, especially at the five Elite LAN events, coupled with just a 1.04 rating in Big matches, stopped EliGE from placing any further than #19 this year, a far cry from his placements in prior years and something he's looking to change heading into 2022 with three new players by his side.

"I was really shocked when I saw that I made it [into the top 20] this year because I don't think I played up to that standard. There were a lot of things that didn't go right in 2021 and I wish that I could've done things differently and found better solutions during it. However, I can't change how it went and progression isn't always a straight line up and 2021 was one of the years for me where I took a lot of steps backwards.

"The main thing now is that I recognize my shortcomings in the year and I am going to grow from it and try to become as good as I possibly can for my team and bring us back to the top in 2022. I know the work that needs to be done with it and I have been consciously working on it in the last couple months and I will have to continuously keep working on it to make sure that I reach the goals that I want to."

Bold prediction by GG.BET

The customary addition to the Top 20 ranking returns this year as well, as we will again be asking the world's best who they see as the stars of tomorrow. To ensure the prediction is truly bold, the player selected must be 20 years old or younger and have no previous experience playing for a top 20 team.

EliGE chose 18-year-old AWPer Marshall "Minus" Sedowicz as his Bold prediction, powered by GG.BET, believing that the young talent will break out after demonstrating solid form in ESEA Premier in 2021. "I have watched a couple of his games and I think that he has potential in a couple years," EliGE said. "We don't have many AWPers in NA and he has been having some success in Premier, so I am interested to see how well he can play moving forward against higher competition."

Liquid is top 10 ish this year and ofc if someone has the best stat in Liquid its either NAF of Elige so... Btw can HLTV just use Liquid's new jersey picture instead of that 2019/2020 jersey???
2022-01-05 01:56
Before the Top20 list started, I had the same opinion. But once I saw Broky at 20, it was clear that Elige, Twistzz, NAF were all 100% on the list. Even Elige didn't see it coming :D. And HLTV pointed this out as well - "Unlike previous years, EliGE's spot in the top 20 wasn't guaranteed in 2021 nor able to be predicted in advance."

That’s true, and consistency whilst playing in many top tier events seems to be one of the most important factors for the top 20 (for Elige and broky at least).

"the lack of strong peaks, especially at the five Elite LAN events" so, blast fall final with only 5/10 top 10 teams and 3/5 top 5 teams is an elite lan? XDDDDD also according to your own stats, he has 1.09 in 37 against top 5 and not 1.10 in 40, nice article hltv.org/stats/players/8738/elige?event=..

blast groups, showdowns, kato/cologne play ins, major challengers arent supposed to count towards rating (and they not being indeed) since there were no mvp and it is shown in the article "elige 2021 tournaments stats", "clown"
2022-01-05 08:52
6 replies
are you fucking blind or trolling? look at all the stats on EliGE and broky's graphic. They are the same as those from the event filter that I linked. blast groups, showdowns, kato/cologne play ins, major challengers are all taken into consideration. The "player X 2021 tournaments stats" section only show the main events to keep it brief for the article.

alright maybe you also can explain the first part of #117?
2022-01-05 12:20

It's an 8 team event, not a 16 team. But 5/8 teams being top 10 and out of them 3 being top 5 makes it a pretty competitive event. On top of that it was an arena event, making it even more significant. And the huge prize pool of course.
2022-01-05 14:54
3 replies
that describes casual "big event" not "elite" elite are supposed to be "most competitive events of the year" like 5/5 top5 and 8/9 top10 im not even sure iem winter was elite because there were no #1 team there maybe there is a typo in the article and they meant just "elite events", not "elite lan events", since they already confirmed in broky article that kato was elite or hltv just once again trying to be "smartassess who know some hidden truth"
2022-01-05 15:00
2 replies
> elite are supposed to be "most competitive events of the year" Since majority of this year was online, it automatically makes the 5 big international LANs Elite-tier. Fall Final should definitely be considered an Elite event since it was the only LAN event other than the Major to have a crowd, which is what defines true LAN experience. I'm not sure about Katowice though. Maybe they included it because it's been historically one of the 3 most important events of every year, along with Cologne and the Majors.
2022-01-05 15:30
The team rankings have counted online as LAN for the last couple of years. No reason why this would be different.
2022-01-05 16:38
bro, players know what rank they will be? Elige know that he will be 19 before showing who is top 19, that s not fair...
2022-01-04 20:19
Extra Salt Minus soon 👀
2022-01-04 20:26
To be fair, I don't think it is deserved, next then is NAF, like 99%, but with such rating, there must be mir than, as he has EVP for Katowice, and probably at least 1-2 for CIS RMR. And his overall rating 1,19 vs 1,14 with 173 vs 148 maps sound much better, and 1,11 vs 1,08 against top-20, though on 97 vs 108 maps. Similar can be applied to Stavn, who probably now won't end up here, with his 1,10 rating and 159 maps with 1,07 against top-20 but based on 134 maps. And with at least 2 EVP for EPL 13 and 14. TLDR - no ELiGE or NAF in top-20, or it is bad for overall rating due to many holes left for other players.

Loudmouth BR fans are so delusional. They are the most toxic fans, have some of the most disrespectful players (Who even threaten to harm others) in the scene. Gotta post at least one NA player or Americans will have a tantrum. I like Elige a lot but there isnt a single NA player deserving to be in the top 20 this year. Twistzz gets frags but doesnt win games, Elige was super inconsistent and NAF had his team dragging him down. Stewie is a nonfactor along with Grim. Every BR teams success was total flukes. The rest flocked to Valorant to stroke their egos and line their wallets.

How did Liquid beat Liquid? Must be a typo "The player break and return to online play for ESL Pro League Season 14 offered signs of life for Liquid, who once again had a solid group stage as they lost only a single series, falling to Gambit but picking up victories over NIP and Liquid in the process."

2022-01-04 22:46
why do NA players / Brazil players if they are in top 20 always pick some random no namer for "bold prediction" saying "big thing soon" like why stop being biased just pick someone that actually has potential.
2022-01-04 22:50

Because it's called a bold prediction. If he picked someone like oSee it would not be very bold at all

There is probably 25 players atleast more deserving to be on the list.
2022-01-05 01:46
When you consider that igl don't make it but have in most teams the biggest impact on the server but that lack of measure it boost bad players in that list. So you get 0/8

Just accept that he is a hell of a player.

Why would I? Both the 2020 and 2021 lists containing any BR/NA players is a joke.

Literally braindead swede. Kscerato, VINI, NAF, Elige and many more literally better than the best swedish players

Haha it just keeps getting better. VINI? Kscerato? Furia has never won anything relevant what so ever and Liquid had one period like 2 years ago with a little fluke. Keep on dreaming, neither NA or BR is relevant anymore and wont compete for titles. Still remember all the hilarious threads about kng & co deserving a Tier 1 org with supreme salary cause "they're gonna be top 1 for sure". Tier 4 at best.

Not deserved. Liquid was too bad. And hltv does the same shit as last year. Just put NA players in the list cuz marketing and statisfy NA scene

+1 I don't know how he ends up in top 20 especially since NAF was better than him. If all three of EliGE NAF and Twistzz are there it's an effing joke
2022-01-05 12:44
I think is a case of liquid org instead of na scene but ok underserved top 20 and 19 so far
2022-01-05 14:51
Congrats John Athan, well done >nothing ever came to fruition >It was the main factor that made me as a player and teammate dip below the standard set for me >thankfully, it won't be a factor anymore Can we get Elige to elaborate on this? I will add Elige is incredibly earnest to this day, and that's great to see

Just saying, it will be harder to be in the top 20 next year for elige, because the team has not still upgraded any player. I mean, they announced shox and osee so far. Shox might be better than grim but it will not be easy to fill fallen's shoes.
