23:25 Day one concludes with only 16 teams left standing

The final round of the first day has come to an end, leaving only the strongest alive as the herd of over 700 teams was thinned out to less than 20. Mos of the strongest contenders made it through, however, with top 30 heavyweights BIG, fnatic, OG, K23, HEET, GamerLegion, Movistar Riders and Dignitas all still alive and fighting for the four spots at the RMR tournaments.

nexa's OG made it to the final games

The Round-of-16 match-ups, which will kick off Wednesday at 16:00 , are the following:

Europe OG vs. Germany cowana
Spain Movistar Riders vs. Russia Spirit
Russia K23 vs. Ukraine B8
France HEET vs. Bulgaria SKADE
Germany BIG vs. Poland Wisla Krakow
Sweden Dignitas vs. Europe BenchedHeroes
Europe fnatic vs. Denmark Los Reyes
Russia AVE vs. Sweden GamerLegion

22:45 fnatic, BIG, Movistar Riders move on through RO64

In the penultimate round of the first day of the qualifier, the stakes continue to raise as more big names are knocked out and others stay in the running. The biggest upsets in this round include Nexus eliminating ECSTATIC and FORZE losing to Russian lineup UNPLUGG3D, while Endpoint met their fate at the hands of BIG.

Other notable names Apeks, the newly signed Falcons, and Spirit all win their games as well, setting up some big matches in the final round of the day:

Bulgaria SKADE vs France Falcons
Germany BIG vs Europe Apeks
Europe fnatic vs Romania Nexus

20:35 SAW, 1WIN, Finest fall in RO128

As the team count continues to shrink, more and more notable names begin to meet, with Tricked taking down SAW, K23 defeating regional rivals 1WIN, and ECSTATIC beating Enterprise. Both SKADE and Bulgarian compatriots WinX move on to the round of 64 after victories over 4glory and the new LDLC, respectively.

The biggest favorites continue to march forward, as fnatic, BIG, HEET, and Sprout all move on to the next round. A Swedish mix headed up by Robin "flusha" Rönnquist and Jesper "JW" Wecksell, HeLlSlAyErZ, remain in contention and are next set to face off against HitMasters.

19:06 Eternal Fire eliminated in RO256 by OG

As the round of 256 nears its end, many notable squads have matched up with each other, with most of the big favorites advancing onwards. Notable results from before this round include the elimination of Aleksi "allu" Jalli's team temp by the hands of Ukrainian squad IKIGAI, cowana taking down MAD Lions, and SAW defeating the new-look Sangal.

The round of 256 itself has featured many notable matchups with some upsets for bigger teams: EC Brugge fell to Swedish mix e4e while NLG took down 777. OG remains strong, having beaten Eternal Fire to move on to the round of 128, while Movistar Riders, Spirit, BIG, and fnatic follow suit.

16:12 Bracket set, first matches going live

The first Europe RMR open qualifier's round of 1024 is underway with the bracket set and the top seeded teams given a BYE into the round of 512. Find all of the match-ups here.

15:55 Brollan to miss RMR open qualifiers

After removing Owen "smooya" Butterfield from the active roster and bringing up Iulian "regali" Harjău to take over AWPing duties, fnatic have now announced they will be without Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin for the coming RMR qualifiers and will instead field a second academy player, Peppe "Peppzor" Borak, as a stand-in.

15:50 First Europe RMR open qualifier set to start

Teams from all over Europe, including the CIS region, are set to face off against each other in the first PGL Major Antwerp 2022 Europe RMR open qualifier, which is taking place across two days on February 22-23 with four spots at the European Regional Major Ranking tournaments up for grabs.

All matches, starting at 16:00 both days, will be best-of-ones with the exception of the best-of-three quarter-finals, which are the qualifying matches.

The whole bracket will be played out for seeding purposes even after the four semi-finalists who punch their ticket to the Europe RMR are known, including a third-place decider.

The full team list for the first RMR qualifier is here.

The teams that will not be competing in the open qualifier due to already being placed in the Europe RMRs because of their top 16 finishes in the PGL Stockholm Major are:

not that good. I suppose it's still very early days. Still best finnish team, but that's not much of an achievement. Yesterday they did okay, beat everyone they should have, but lost to ave, atleast not some random mix

I hope so, but I think he is still contracted to the org behind Gorillaz, and I doubt HAVU will even consider paying a buyout. So it's possible but not gonna happen very soon.

Yes, it was obvious, but my point was that Mantuu was for a long time a pretty meh AWPer, and Woxic (while on Mouz) was a contender for best AWPer in the world.

Yeah, Mantuu is good (not the best, but good), but a few years ago he wasn't doing much of note, while Woxic was considered potentially the best AWPer in the world for some time. You would never expect the Alternate Attax AWPer (top 38 team at peak) to beat the Mousesports AWPer (top 2 team at peak).

Why are Savage and Endpoint not included in the significant matches when B8 is? I don't understand how they select teams to follow up on.

Ah, thank you for clarifying.

How does this structure even work? Eternal Fire lose 1 bo1 and eliminated? lol
2022-02-22 19:29

Teams that don't make it to top 4 can try again in the next few open qualifiers. It's a bit dumb that if you have one bad map you're out, but that's the only way to manage that huge bracket.
2022-02-22 19:32

ah yeah i think it's dumb if a top 30 team gets eliminated by a top 10 team in one bo1 and rank 100 teams making it farther than them
2022-02-22 19:35
1 reply
Well, the top 4 will be only good teams though, it's not easy to make it through a bracket like this. Not necessarily the best, but they'll come through the next qualifier. Eternal Fire and MAD Lions are out, Endpoint will be out after they go up against BIG, but the top 4 will probably just be OG and BIG and two of the other top 30 teams listed above. That's how the qualifiers always work. The dark horses only get through in the third or fourth qualifier.

should never have a single elimination bracket in bo1 imo but i can understand as #128 said that it might be the only way to manage such a large bracket with so many teams in it

you want double elimination bo3 for a qualifier with 700+ teams?

IMO is also shorthand for “in my opinion.” What that means is that IMO can simply mean someone is offering their perspective or opinion. However, although IMO is an acronym or abbreviation, it's also considered a slang word that isn't widely used in professional writing.

What is the logic behind the bracket match-ups? EF - OG in 128 but nonamers can still go further without facing with top50 teams.
2022-02-22 19:33
7 replies
It's random, only notable teams get an exception and are matched up versus no opponent in the first round. In theory you could have OG vs BIG in round two (256), the bracket is just so large that it makes things like that unlikely.

But it's so bullshit. Instead of this one, they should've to use HLTV ranking. Why they are so afraid to use HLTV ranking, I couldn't understand?
2022-02-22 19:55
3 replies
2/3 of those teams aren't even on HLTV, plus HLTV is just a journalistic organisation, it has nothing to do with the game or events.

I think you are so underestimating hltv since for all of the players It's the first place to look to understand which place they're in. And also CSGO itself uses hltv in the game. Therefore, my solution is: - First, they can decide on top teams by using hltv ranking. - - Then, put them in a comfortable place. - Then, match them orderly by using other teams' faceit level (eg. level 1 team -lowest faceit level team match up with top hltv ranking team in the first round, etc.). - When they achieve the tier 10 teams, they'll randomly match with the remaining teams. As a consequence of this system, we will not see something like NEWCOMERS vs HEET in 64 and ended 1-16.
2022-02-22 20:37

HLTV is a great tool, very reliable, but it's independent from the actual game or events. We can value the HLTV ranking as much as we like, that doesn't make it official. And the system works well enough to get the good teams that would achieve anything at the major into the closed qualifier.
2022-02-22 20:52
Not true. You can see that they seeded some of the teams, but not all of them. OG, BIG, Fnatic, K23 each lead their bracket and will not meet before the qualifying matches.
