Virtus.pro criticize ESL ban; allow team to participate in EPL under neutral name

The organization made a firm stance against ESL's ban but decided not to forbid their players from taking part in the upcoming season of ESL Pro League.

On Wednesday, ESL made a stance against Russia's invasion into Ukraine as the organizer unveiled its decision to forbid organizations with ties to the Russian government and those under alleged or confirmed EU sanctions related to the conflict from participating in the upcoming ESL Pro League Season 15.

The players representing said organizations would be allowed to participate under a neutral name, without representing their country and organization or their team's sponsors.

Namely, the TO identified Virtus.pro and Gambit as the two organizations affected out of the 24 teams set to take part in the league. The former's ultimate ownership reportedly tracks to Sogaz Insurance group, which is being sanctioned by the EU, while the latter is owned by Russian telecoms network MTS and by extension Vladimir Yevtushenkov, a Russian billionaire believed to have close ties to the Kremlin.

Virtus.pro allow players to take part in EPL

Virtus.pro has now made a statement addressing ESL's decision, claiming that the organization is "not connected to the government" and that there are no "rational reasons to suspend us from playing from tournaments apart from prejudice and pressure from the outside."

But despite calling the decision "a prime example of cancel culture," the Russian organization decided not to forbid their players from playing in the tournament.

"... we won't respond to this aggression with aggression of our own by forbidding our players to play in this tournament," the statement says. "They spend lots of time to become pro players, and unlike some tournament operators, we are not ready to invalidate someone else's efforts."

"If they decide to play at the tournament, we will support their decision."

ESL Pro League bans "organizations with ties to Russian government" from upcoming season *

Although it seems the decision now lies in the team's hands, it is unclear whether they will participate in ESL Pro League Season 15 or not, and the team has yet to comment on the situation.

Current sanctions placed on Russian airlines around Europe make it difficult for anyone to travel from Russia, and Virtus.pro field at least two players affected, Dzhami "Jame" Ali and Evgenii "FL1T" Lebedev, who are believed to have returned to their home country following the conclusion of IEM Katowice.

ESL Pro League Season 15 will take place at a studio location in Germany. Virtus.pro have been placed in Group B, which is set to kick off on Wednesday, March 16.

It’s russian based orgs, russians can technically still play (like m0nesy for example) cause he is part of G2. I know entropiq isnt part of BLAST, but theoretically if they somehow qualified they would be allowed to play even with 4 russians cause their org is czech. So dont say all ruskis cant play cause that technically isnt true, but i do agree that ESL has appproached this much better than BLAST

Vp statement was big statement and they wanted to say its wrong to ban Russian teams. It is problem in other sports like NHL it has been large speculate that Russian players will not be draft eligible. And if that happen it will ruin so many innocent Russian players career. Point is this is discrimination and racism. I know it is for good things BUT we live in 2022 I believe there is another more ethnic solution. And my biggest hope is that war will not ruin any Russian player career or any organisation legacy

They will not pay salary since the players won't be able to represent the org or their sponsors. When the players aren't playing for the team, the org doesn't get anything from the players. The reason any org exists and has a team is to get sponsors and make money

If Na'Vi did, it's their own decision they have right to take as a private company. As for Ukrainians getting kicked from RU-owned ladders - I don't really think they'd care, they have bigger problems now, don't you think? Russia is the aggressor here, don't play an enlightened centrist stating both sides are bad.

I'm not enlightened in any way, just a bit brighter than an average If EU wants to take a hit on Russia - they should just cancel out the oil and gas contracts but apparently that's too much so they would just show a pure xenophobia by banning EVEN the paraathletes from Paralympics, sorry but it doesn't go lower than that. What the world is doing rn - only plays into Putin's agenda of the "russophobia"

This is not playing hard on Putin in anyway You think making civilians life more dificult will bother putin when he actively already makes life shit for its cytizens? This a low blow by EU and the world when there are many ways to hit thos rich and authoritarian oligarchs Like for example instead of freezing assets just plain arrest them. Or instead of banning orgs from cs go events or olympic games ban all Russia exports. But nah that would hurt us just as much as them and we cant have that. Better throw soft blows and hope mad population solves this problem for us

No, they need to get rid of Putin. Set up a real democracy and then they will be an amazing place with amazing people. Right now they have spend decades just letting their dictator grab more and more power, the result being what we see now - an insane war on a democratic neighbor and ever more draconian levels of control inside their borders. Russian media aren't even allowed to report facts about the was, they can not even refer to it as a war and if they do then editors go to jail or likely worse, they end up falling out of windows or go missing. If Russians do nothing then they are essentially supporting Putin, that is just slow death.

Just kick Putin out and establish democracy 4Head You sound like a very immature kid throwing a tantrum. Watch this: youtube.com/watch?v=f0N91Bck0w4&ab_chann.. Now, how about you go protest in the streets and demand your country and all the Western governments to pass legislation vowing not to trade with Russia and import no Russian oil and gas. Because the current sanctions are a joke. We'll see how successful you are in this endeavour. And if you're successful, you can then have the moral high ground to berate Russians for not getting rid of Putin. Because right now the western governments are supporting Putin more than Russians ever could because 40% of Russia's economy is oil and gas exports.
2022-03-05 01:15

How is it even relevant what I have done? You are the one living in a nation where your cowardly dictator, has send your military to attack and neighbor that wasn't even threatening . What I see here is Russians saying doing something is to hard, but none of them have any response when it is brought up doing nothing will mean things only get worse. And then there are those that try and deflect, as if talking about something else somehow makes the war on Ukraine disappear. Fact is, as a Russian you can not make go away - the best you can do is to organize and get rid of Putin.

It's insane to think you can have a serious competitive sport when you restrict certain players based on nationality or organization they play under. Especially when the same tournament organizers then talk about how esports is some equal plain where everyone can make their mark. Based VP. Won't be watching anything but the major b/c all these results will be skewed due to not having potent CIS competition. Even if they are there under a different name, they will be demotivated, and these results will be as useless as online play. Even more funny is that everyone hated these guys for so long but once they pander, you will all jump off a bridge for them. Pathetic.

I am curious cause USA did not have war for A LONG time (at least in their eyes cause you gotta be in war every few years), when that happens, will ESL cut this? Will ESL cut NA teams with that? Cause I doubt it. I personally do not find it alright for ANY military to be a sponsor of anything. Not because this is USA, I'd have same reaction if it was a Luxemburg's army. For USA's sponsorship it's actually their attempt at appealing more to common people with new recruiting techniques. This sponsorship if I'm not mistaken is from their recruiting budget. They thought good guys vs bad guys game, sounds like military and like someone would think they could do that for real when they watch it. there's word "terrorists" in the game, very own USA's invention. It must suck for Ynk to see that and get reminded of it, I don't like being reminded of it either. But most of all I do not think it's right and it's hypocritical to have that as a sponsor to say the least. If anyone would bring that up it's Thorin cause he is a madlad greater than espors who would tank the dislikes made by brainwashed bots just say things that are right. I doubt anyone else got any balls to do it, and ESL is fine with advertising a war crime machine so it's not about what's right - it's about the money.

Yeah, that's true, no military should sponsor anything. However, to go and ban teams with (alleged) ties to the Russian government like ESL or teams that are russian I guess like blast, but then allow literal government strongarms like the american military (the worst offender when it comes to dodginess in terms of their history) to DIRECTLY sponsor an event. I literally think it could be part of that sponsorship that would cause a conflict of interest here. It allows for political pressure to seep through and overlap the core competiton, which is something ALL competiton suffers from now, even esports sadly. Thorin absoluitely will not truly criticize it, and frankly any political take he has is usually dogshit anyway. His esports takes are pretty good but he beat around the bush on this topic altogether. Also btw, if America isnt directly fighting someone at any given time, they are giving money to people fighting (think Israel, cant w8 for 10yr for mentioning this), and it usually the offending party that they sponsor. ALL money from America is blood money. Relating this to CS. I do not believe anyone should be taking these tournaments seriously, as the strongest region of last year has been effectively wiped out from tier1 competition, (and even pinnacle cups ffs). Anyone out there trying to gaslight and say "b-but this is greater than c-counter strike" should just go off HLTV and stop watching esports and go do something actually impactful. that narrative is trash.
2022-03-06 03:52

This definitely is a conflict of interest and I do not think there's a two way about it. Why would US air force continue to sponsor ESL if they don't do same sanctions like USA politicians are enforcing on Russia? US air force is an army directly controlled by politics of the country. And I try to ignore political here to focus on esport side of things where esport integrity is being compromised by conflict of political interests. Because fat money is on the line for ESL. SO I think this would be down Thorin's line but I am not sure if he did burn the bridge with ESL cause whoever points this one out is burning that bridge af. But yeah, USA has no industry of their own apart from weapons and war industry. Not to mention that ESL sponsorship money is likely illegal in NYC state cause USA army is not to give any money from recruiting budget to promote them selves on gaming platforms such as twitch. That was pushed when drama came about with USA soldiers recruiting on stream and banning people talking about war. This year is likely fucked because of this tho, at least in CSGO sense. Best teams are out, other best teams include newly made teams with limited playbook. No matter who wins what, rankings will be irrelevant 100% this year. Which is sad cause a lot of people saw this year as potentially greatest so far with all the moves that happened.

Of course it could affect the course of war only if you look at the bigger picture. If you ban all Russians athletes from every competitions (affecting sponsors, scaring away investors and viewership), if you prevent all Russians companies from making business, if you forbid all Russians citizens to travel freely in the rest of world, Putin's leadership could be put in question by Russian Oligarchs and turn the public opinion against him. Economic sanctions is a tool of war. Interesting book to read on this topic blog.yalebooks.com/2022/02/24/the-histor..

Yeah but that's kinda the point of propaganda and news - to outrage people. Last few days entire world is bombarded with lines carefully tailored to outrage the reader. West is overplaying it, Ukraine is calling for WW3, Russia is downplaying it..... And only way to not get effected by that and try to swim in between all that crap like a fish is to know some history. This has happened before, this will happen again. This is nothing new, not one bit of it is new. It took YEARS for this to boil to the point of invasion of Ukraine. Why was no one outraged before? Obviously cause propaganda did not tell them to do so, in last 8 years this could have happened at any point and it would be as true as it is now. Putin calls it special operation cause he claims he wants to wipe Nato influence out of there so we should probably honor that, after all, we honor when USA says they are bombarding terrorists so let's give them same treatment, sounds fair? Yes, but not to outraged propaganda bot who is mad because USA did a good job to follow what Nazis did and dehumanized groups. Putin did not do that so this war is between people, USA only killed animals. At least in your average propaganda fed bot's eyes. Conflict when USA bombarded Yugoslavia to take part of our land and create their puppet country Kosovo - you can trace events that lead to that almost 100 years ago from days when my country was a Kingdom and decision by our King Aleksandar got the ball rolling for it. You see what I'm aiming at? You can call it butterfly effect I guess in some historical way but politics play vital part in every war and are 100% responsible for it. In this case I really feel bad for people Ukraine who are dying cause their corrupted politicians thought they could play a game they obviously couldn't. Same politicians who now call for WW3 and call for civilians to grab guns and get killed in process..... Makes me so sad for the people.

Who told you that the Russian people are unhappy with Putin? Your TV? I will tell you, as a resident of this country, one thing that you may be surprised by. There were fewer real supporters of the pre-war operation than there are now. The war with Ukraine was inevitable. To understand this, you need to analyze the situation more deeply. The media feeds the way politicians need it. Us by the way, too. You won't deny that there are no independent media left now, will you? Therefore, in order to sort out all this shit, you will have to climb into the well yourself, and what they give you from it on a plate is no longer the same.

You are so dumb to believe that someone would fall in the trap of comparing wars. Just because we think that what you Russians are doing now is terribly wrong does not mean that we agree with other wars. The last time Sweden attacked someone (Norway) was 1814 so don't call us two-faced. Russia has no mandate in attacking Ukraine, no mandate in killing civilians and should crawl back to the hole that they came from, otherwise good luck being Soviet again isolated from the rest of the world!
2022-03-08 15:48
15 replies
If you did not agree with the killings from the United States, why was there not a single sanction in their direction, and against Russia - any eatery considers it its duty to put forward sanctions? What is it, if not double-face? I understand that your brain is not capable of anything other than "stop the war you rus dumb!!!111". You are not taught to deal with problems deeper. But try it sometime, you won't die from it.
2022-03-09 09:24
I'll help you. The West doesn't give a shit about Ukraine and its inhabitants. It is more important for them that there is a reason to economically pressure Russia, which they have always wanted. And the media is doing everything to expose Russia as the only bad side. But only in fairy tales there is black and white. In life, everything is much more complicated. It's just that in the media these difficulties are erased, and only a picture for zombification is shown. We have our own picture, you have your own. And the truth is somewhere in the middle. And 1 more hint - this war was inevitable. If you are interested, read independent sources on this subject, and you will understand why.

So not only the west is against Russia's invasion, all of the world is except for some other dictators. You've been tricked again. It is convenient to divide the territory into 100 countries, and then proudly declare that most countries are against Russia. It really verbally increases the weight. You believed that too, didn't you? But I have some bad news for you. There is no majority against Russia. Let's now take a list of countries that voted against the anti-Russian resolution, or abstained (in fact, they are not against the war, and they do not want to punish Russia in any way). Can you add up their territory and population yourself? I'm sure you can handle it! And so let's go: Russia (146.2 million), Syria (17.5 million), Belarus (9.3 million), Eritrea (3.5 million), China (1.414 billion inhabitants), India (1.379 billion), Pakistan (208.6 million), Bangladesh (164.7 million), Vietnam (97.4 million), Congo (89.6 million), Iran (84.1 million), South Africa (59.6 million), Tanzania (58 million), Sudan (44.3 million), Algeria (44.2 million), Uganda (41.2 million), Iraq (40.1 million ), Angola (32.9 million), Mozambique (31.3 million), Madagascar (28.5), North Korea (25.8), Sri Lanka (21.9 million), Mali (19.7), Kazakhstan (18.9 million), Senegal (16.7 million), Zimbabwe (15.2 million), South Sudan (13.8 million), Burundi (11.9 million), Bolivia (11.6 million), Cuba (11.3 million), Tajikistan (9.5 million), Laos (7.3 million), Kyrgyzstan (6.5 million), Nicaragua (6.5 million), El Salvador (6.5 million), CAR (4.8 million), Mongolia (3.4 million), Armenia (3 million), Namibia (2.5 million) and Equatorial Guinea (1.4 million).

In many. But...anyway, What does it matter? We are now talking about the majority of those who support or do not support sanctions. Poor countries are both on our list and on your list. But I do not know if you understand, but the more Europe imposes sanctions, the worse it will be, first of all, for the inhabitants of Europe itself. You're not going to argue with that, are you? Right? Are you and your friends ready to reduce your purchasing power by at least 2 times? Europe is now very similar in mentality to Ukrainians. A typical Ukrainian is ready to set fire to his house, if only his neighbor's house would catch fire. This is not a European matter.

It is indeed a European matter. That is the whole problem, Putler does not want the Ukrainians to be more European (democratic, part of EU, Nato etc) therefor he says it is not a European problem and bombs the hell out of them. And yes, I am willing to loose money if it stops Putler from pointless killing of civilians. And no all that voted neutral are not against sanctions on Russia. Some didn't dare to vote no because they are afraid of western sanctions and some didn't vote yes because they depend on Russia. You need to analyze it by country.

Of course, the voters have their own motives. We are talking about the majority and the minority. Putin is not going to take over Europe, don't be afraid. This is suicide, because it will inevitably lead to World War 3, which no one wants. The conflict with Ukraine has been brewing since 2008, And it became absolutely inevitable after the Maidan in 2014, and everyone knew about it. A lot of politicians predicted back in the early 2000s that there would inevitably be a fire between Europe and Russia, and Ukraine would be the firewood. Do not forget that the country of Ukraine became part of the USSR with a completely different territory, much smaller, and after the collapse they were given a huge piece that did not belong to them (eastern Ukraine). And yes, let's be honest, Europe doesn't want Ukraine to be a European country either. Otherwise, why hasn't Ukraine been accepted into the European Union yet? Ukraine has been standing with an outstretched hand in front of Europe for 8 years, but this poor country will be like a burden for Europe, you understand that it is beneficial for the West that they are a layer as aggressive as possible towards Russia.

And don't tell me that they don't bomb civilians (also Russian speaking) because there are journalists there filming everything. Just that Putlers media does not show that. Please open your eyes!

Well, it's hard to communicate with you when you look at only 1 source of information. As I said, they show you what they want to show, small episodes, and not the whole situation around this episode, and the reasons for the appearance of this episode. I have already said that I look at the information from both sides of the conflict, and I see everything perfectly. Do you seriously think that the Russian military bombs houses with children just out of anger towards Ukrainians? No, aren't you serious? Casualties are inevitable among the population, and their number primarily depends on the tactics of combat by Ukrainians. They prefer to place their heavy equipment and artillery directly in residential areas, schools and hospitals are often used as shelter. There are even photo and video proofs of these facts, numerous eyewitness testimonies. In addition, Ukrainians deliberately do not let civilians out of the cities where they are fighting, because they understand perfectly well that if no one remains there except the military, they will be extinguished from the air very quickly. That is why they are fighting from residential areas, and not outside the city, where there would be no losses except for the military. It is only because Russia is trying to minimize civilian casualties that the seizure of territory has been taking so long. If desired, this operation could already be completed on February 25, simply covering Kiev, all government buildings and all military facilities with missiles. But this is not happening for the reasons I wrote to you.

So you justify Russias war with what? What right does Russia have to kill women and children? Have Ukraine attacked Russia in some way? The only wrong that they have done is to elect a govermet that does not consist of Putlers puppets. They are free in comparsion to you. You have a dictator.

Of course not. The main reasons for the invasion: 1) organizing Nazi processions and legalizing fascist symbols, creating nationalist monuments. There are also people with the ideology of Nazism in the government. Ukraine itself does not even deny this. Russian Russians had the biggest losses in the 1941-1945 war - about 25 million Russians. Ukraine decided to play with fire - you see what came of it 2) The borders of NATO continue to expand to the east. This poses a security threat to the Russian Federation. Otherwise, name at least 1 reason why NATO is expanding to the East, and why Russia is not being accepted into NATO, although Putin proposed it even under Bush.

The dilemma is that in the West, these arguments are trying, if not to notice, then to humiliate their value as much as possible. If a person does not want to figure it out himself, he will definitely believe what is being told to him in the media.

Nothing wrong in VP's statement imo. VP did not start this invasion. ESL is just the biggest hypocrites that are actively choosing to value white, christian lives over other lives. If you're wading into politics, be consistent with your bans, sanctions and rulings and whatever. Obviously, ESL won't ban NA or EU orgs but I'll be happy with them dropping US Air Force who've committed so many war crimes in Middle East.

ESL is now a Saudi Arabia company. Not sure "that (they) are actively choosing to value white, christian lives over other lives" anymore if they ever did. Money is the only things TO's are looking for, not sure they care on supporting any western values. This decision make them look respectable and it's a guarantee to keep attracting investors. Doesn't make them less hypocrites though.

They dont touch with those sanctions absolute majority of the Russian society. Why is it needed to discriminate such people as cybersportsmen who arent related to whats happening by any ways? Moreover those spots gaming, pro-gaming are making pretty much western influence on Russian young generation. Why to remove those spots?

They are related to what is happening involuntarily. Alisher Usmanov, who's close to Putin, invest $100 million in VP back in 2015. My guess is ESL want to look respectable to keep attracting investors, keeping their sponsors and their viewership. The only way for them to do that is to align with the western strategy of sanctioning every Russian orgs and companies to pressure Putin by hurting the Russian economy. In the same time, they hope to influence the public opinion, who will suffer those sanctions, to turn against Putin's leadership.

With such amazing intel department ELS has - did they look into death toll of US air force before taking their money for sponsorship? Or their calculators broke trying to sum it up?

My point is that ESL is used to recruit people, over 3500 people have been recruited in military because of ESL sponsorship and you think no one died because of it? They are all picking flowers I assume.... I am not fine with advertising ANY military force, USA, Russia, Luxemburg, Vatican, none are okay to get advertised and help their expansion while literally killing very own audience of ESL. We cannot pretend that people didn't die and won't keep on getting killed because of this very advertisement. How is any of it fine? But to answer to your a bit silly claim that it's fine to support army cause nation is No1 economically - USA is No1 only in weapon production and weapons owned per capita. Also think for number of people in prisons they lead by example. Trademarks of FREEDOM. Otherwise every single placement consistently places USA as 3-rd world country rarely making into top 10, healthcare is not in top 30, education is crippled, crime rate is hella high, life expectancy is lower than average for any actual 1-st world country, divorce rate is high, no industry apart from war industry, terrible treatment of people who have been used up by that war industry. Number of homeless people per capita is stupendously high, debt per capita is also hella high when related to average yearly income. I almost forgot, their correction system is hella trash, rate of people returning to criminal activities after prison is the highest from all supposed "1-st world countries". Economically they are in ruins but somehow still printing money. Cause of their one and only industry that keeps on giving - War. So yeah, let's not kid our selves here, look at stats ples. If anything, if your claim was true and nation is No1, shouldn't we help other nations be on par with it? Cause if someone is clearly No1 then that is not good, no matter who it is, no?

Once again i will say the world isnt build to be fair, its build to be used only to exploit economically others. US has largest Weapon Production, largest GDP in the world, Largest Exports of Weapons. Yet China if I know will has not surpassed GDP of America and certain indexes. I have not said i support Airforce but its the way these companies get money from, I mean Hugo Boss uses Uyghurs which work themselves to death etc. No one is Innocent in this world. Once again i will say theres greater evil and evil in the world all alone sometimes you ll get a chance to escape that decision, but at some Point you have to take it. Im not claiming anything, other than ESL desperately needed money and that is why they were sold to Saudis sponsored US Airforce

But weren't VP and Gambit banned cause they think it's fair to ban them? Business wise, I cannot imagine how parents are fine with children watching program that advertises sending their children to get killed. This will backfire on ESL sooner or later.

kind of ridiculous for a team that supports the invasion of another country to criticize anyone for being left out.
2022-03-05 14:51
If the team is allowed to play I don't see any issues for Russian players to get to Germany. As far as I know flights from Russia are suspended but Russian citizens are still able to enter from other destinations. So guys can just move to Turkey or Dubai for transit and fly to Germany from there

HLTV keeps deleting my comments, because I wrote that ESL is owned by Saudi Arabia (who voted in favor of Russia's war) and their totally unpolitical organisation banning Russian teams is simply hypocritical. Apparently ESL's/Saudi-Arabias pockets are deep and they pay HLTV to delete any ESL/Saudi-Arabia related criticism. But hey, as Carmac stated, the ESL won't change, lmao
