PGL Major Antwerp opening matchups and schedule revealed

With less than a week to go before the first stage of the PGL Major begins, the organizers confirmed the opening matchups and announced the full schedule.

The first stage of the PGL Major Antwerp is set to kick off on Monday, May 9, where the Challengers and Contenders are set to clash for eight spots in the next stage while the eight Legends await their turn after coming out on top of the Regional Major Ranking tournaments.

Four days of action await us in the first Swiss stage featuring fan favorites like G2, Vitality, and Liquid along with several other household names, Astralis and ENCE to name a couple, and underdogs aplenty, with the likes of 9z and IHC looking to make their name in their first-ever Major appearances.

The opening matches have been revealed, and they will see a couple of highlight bouts kick off the action already, with Vitality vs. Complexity and G2 vs. Liquid up first in round one on the main stream in the two most closely-contested matchups of the bunch. Later on on the main broadcast, Astralis will face off against IHC and MIBR take on Outsiders.

Over on the B stream, Bad News Eagles will hope to continue their Cinderella run as they lock horns with Eternal Fire first, before forZe and Renegades clash. In the latter part of the day, Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo's Imperial will play Spirit and ENCE, one of the biggest favorites to go through on the back of recent successes, will face 9z.

First match opponents are irrelevant. I am happy liquid got G2, it would only get easier if they lose, if they win they have a high chance of facing some weak 1-0 opponents.

I'm not really worried about the first round. It's all of the rounds. Some people have to go through a crazy gauntlet of top teams and others get extra easy paths. It's a badly designed system.
2022-05-04 05:17

yeah. This bucholz system focusses on the perfromance of a team in the particular tournament. No regard to their seeding over the year

One bo1 loss = forced to play against the best EU teams. Doesn’t matter that they dominated the rest of the rmr
2022-05-03 20:34
1 reply
Yep, that Is why seed is important. 00Nation lost to Case in the open qualifier and because of that they got 4 difficult matches in the RMR and were eliminated. If you want a good seed in a important champion, you can't afford to lose even a single BO1 against a team that you are favourite.
2022-05-03 21:04
liquid vs g2 is fair. g2 is one of the highest seeds to they play one of the lowest seeds
2022-05-03 20:00
It's based on the results of the last major. For example, GODSENT and Sharks (both Americas teams) went out 0-3 in Stockholm, so for this major, Americas teams get the bottom 2 seeds.

Ahaha Why is everyone talking like BNE is good? They just got here by beating stupid teams like sinners and Asg. EF on the other hand; beat good teams like fnatic,OG, dignitas and fought tough teams. (They played very cowardly in the Faze game but then they got over their fears) I don't think people are too stupid to see that.

And of course Asstralul getting the easiest opponent in the entire stage. I'm sure every fucking matchmaking of the tournament asstralul is participating in is rigged in their favour either because they're the most accomplished org in cs or they are paying organizers shit ton of money to rigg them the easiest opponent. Cant wait till they get match against a real opponent and get their arse dominated

Ence tier 2 team, you must be joking right? They played 2 finals in a row, I don't think you know how seeding goes, it's logical that we are gonna play a litlle easier match in first round, that's how is supposed to be, and don't talk about HEET, because as long as I know Entropiq lose on RMR against Anonymo, BNE, and of course that's same HEET(0-2)

9z and Liquid (Americas #6 and #5) have the worst seeds, then it comes APAC #2 and #1). Because EUB had one less Legend than EUA their challenger have better seed than EUA of same position. Astralis is fourth best seed, while IHC is the fourth worst seed.

The seeding is correct. At last Major, Americas #5 and Americas #6 were eliminated 0-3 and both Asia and Oceania were eliminated 1-3. It's fair for them to get a better seed this major.

I think that basing on months ago, with different teams, just to try to make things fair... will almost always end up in shitty seeds. The ideal world would be: using qualified teams last months reaults in order to decide the seeds, not old results from teams that don't even have a lineup anymore (for example)
2022-05-03 19:49
4 replies
Nope, this ideal world doesn't exist because the individual results impact the whole region. If the region goes well, they will have better seeds and more spots for the next major. Americas right now have 6 spots for the Major, because in Stockholm we had at least 3 teams in Legends stage. And using your example, Imperial and MIBR only have good seeds because of the result of Liquid and EG in Stockholm that don't even have the same lineup anymore. Also, in this major, If 3 American Challengers qualify for the Legend stage, our 6 spots will become 7 spots for the next major. So the results matter a lot for the next major and not only for seeds.

I do not play csgo anymore and I meant the seeding for future matchups. So the matchups for 1-0, 2-0, 0-1, etc.

It's the major, not a tier 3 tournament. Why are bo1's still a thing? To weed out the bad teams? That's what the RMR is for.

All matches bo3 would take forever, it gets boring, makes us (most of us) feels tired as fuck. I love bo1, it makes every single action and round much more important, a mistake and you throw your match away. Bo3 gives so many room to errors, mistakes, and even allows teams to give up a whole map.
2022-05-04 00:24

bo1's are trash at determining the best teams and that's what the major should be about. Even the best teams make mistakes but guess what, in a bo1 it matters much more than in a bo3, but that's awful because it means the worse team will upset far more often. On a bo3 basis the level of play and mistakes will be evened out, and is thus much better for determining the best teams. I dont give a shit if you find it boring to watch the best teams in the world, at the biggest tournament in the world in a bo3. Maybe you should find another game to watch then.

"Maybe you should find another game to watch then" I have been watching CS professional scene for the last 20 years just ro read this bullshit now A reminder: until 2006 EVERY SINGLE tournament was 100% bo1 and the best teams always delivered, SK had their era, top teams were consistently reaching finals. It's not like bo3 causes randomness or unfairness to the game, years of bo1 showed us that.

I guess we should never improve the ways in which we do things. You don't actually seem to be arguing my point, which is that bo3's is just a better way of determining which team is better, and that bo1's can produce inconsistent results. Did I ever say bo3 can't produce upsets? Of course not that would be ridiculous to suggest.

Lmfao BNE vs EF, meanwhile G2 vs Liquid LOL WUT??

Group stage will probably be fine soon, but some of the first matchups are weird. -Vitality and Complexity is fine, they're quite a bit apart. -Bad News Eagles and Eternal Fire are 28 and 29, two of the "bad teams" at the major, they should face better teams, not each other. -G2 and Liquid by itself would be fine, because they're not too close, but they should both face worse teams, because both of them are good enough to go 3-0 (depending on matchups). -ForZe and Renegades is the same thing as with BNE and Eternal Fire. -Astralis and IHC, now that's a good first matchup, a great team versus a team that should never have made it to the major in the first place. -Imperial and Spirit is, again, the same as BEN vs 8Fire and Fours vs Rengas. -MIBR vs Outsiders is fine. -ENCE vs 9z makes a lot of sense as well. Here, let me make the first matchups better: -ENCE vs IHC -G2 vs Renegades -Astralis vs Imperial -Outsiders vs 9z -Vitality vs Eternal Fire -Liquid vs Bad News Eagles -Complexity vs ForZe -MIBR vs Spirit

IHC who beat Tyloo 2-0 and then Renegades 2-0 in a very convincing fashion should have not made to the major at the first place?

I'm sure they are good for their region, but Asian and Oceanian teams never get far. You could leave them out and replace them with more European teams and the major would be more competitive. I like that they're there representing another region, but if the major would be all the best teams of the world instead of particular regions, then there would be less teams from outside of the European/CIS region, and probably none from outside of the North Atlantic region.

So you are saying these asian spots are wasted spots? Tyloo in their prime beat many top-tier teams.
2022-05-04 17:01
But i do think that there are too many spots for NA SA
2022-05-04 17:03
1 reply
That's not what I said at all. I'm happy each region is represented, but many regions never perform well. It's always Europe and CIS that get much further. While it's true that Tyloo has been a competitive team for a few months in 2016 and again in 2018, they have never broken into the top 10 (if I'm not mistaken), and they didn't really do well because they were good, but because Asian teams develop separately in their scene and play very differently, so it takes a while to adapt every time. In my opinion that's very entertaining to see, but it always ends the same way, with them being figured out after a few matches and then beaten every time. I agree that the Americas have too many spots, obviously they got those spots based on how well the region does in the previous major, so it's technically earned, but usually it's to some extent based on luck that American teams get further than they should based on their skills (except of course Luminosity/SK, they were good in 2016/17).

I love FalleN, one of the favorite if not the most favorite AWPers ever for me, but times passed by, these guys arent prime attraction anymore, not against Astralis (who at least managed to keep the tradition and dont change their name during all the mess they had to go through) playing at the same time

your short memory already forgot what I said and is surprised that theres only one player from my country again... the actual joke is that you trying to be a cool kid, but it just shows that that youre weak with all of those phrases like "lol you are a joke, and it must be a joke in your neighborhood and in your school too"... graduated school more than 10 years btw, respect the older too as you have tried to talk about that too, but not showing example yourself. only Furia is relevant (dont even try to bring up that paiN won against them on some online tournament), so have fun in B streams, because thats where MIBR vs Imperial will play when they will be 0-2 and grow up. enough of delusional BR HLTV kids for me today

respect is for those who deserve it... by the way, how do you talk about respect if you started all this referring to Brazil as bra71l ??? you have mental problems man... every action generates a reaction... and if you graduated from university 10 years ago your case is even worse, you're a xenophobic adult with the mentality of a 15-year-old teenager, trying to speak ill of my country but lost this debate... arrogance and the misguided sense of superiority always pays a heavy price... ("lol you're a joke, and it should be a joke in your neighborhood and your school too"... I know that sentence shook you because it's reality... but I wish you to improve as a person, a human being, and learn from your mistakes... sincerely... )

"respect is for those who deserve it" true dat, you dont deserve it if R word is the way you come at me. and you brought up respect before I did. "you have mental problems man" ok, doctor. "I know that sentence shook you because it's reality" I know BRA71L meme shook you for real if after that you were offended and had to start being an edgy kid. it was a reality, doesnt mean that I hate your country. you can keep all of your assumptions and believe your made up "reality" about me personally, I dont car, while I know how it is and never assumed anything about you personally. Im not ideal, so is everyone, can wish you the same, dont be offended by the memes too, you know very well there are worse ways to express the hate on your country, so if I wanted to do that (I didnt want and would never hate on any country) it would have been way worse. also, Im not looking to declare winners or losers in discussions as you do, so whatever, I give you a trophy if that satisfies you. good talk, peace out
