Liquid knock out Astralis from PGL Major

Liquid claim their third win of the Challengers stage to secure a Legends spot, eliminating Astralis in two maps.

The first match of the day featured a once iconic CS:GO rivalry between new lineups of Astralis and Liquid, who faced off in their 2-2 pool series to decide which of the two teams would continue their campaign at the PGL Major Antwerp in the Legends stage of the tournament.

At the end of two thrilling maps, it was the Nick "nitr0" Cannella-led squad who got the better of their Danish opponents, taking Vertigo 16-14 and closing out the series on Ancient, 16-13.

Astralis' loss is yet another blow to the Danes and their fans, as their failure to qualify for the Legends stage also means that the organization has failed to place in the top 16 of a Major for the first time in history. It also marks the first time Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth will not attend the top 16 stage, while a victory for Liquid means Richard "shox" Papillon will retain his flawless record for the 17th Major in a row.

Liquid come back from 0-2 and book their place in the Legends stage

Liquid kicked things off with a bang on their map pick Vertigo, as nitr0's side broke down the Astralis defense through swift and calculated pushes into bomb site, going up 7-1 behind remarkable fragging from shox and Josh "oSee" Ohm.

It wasn't long before Astralis started to pick up the pace, completely reversing the momentum in the latter part of the half by answering nearly all of Liquid's attacks, narrowing the North American team's lead to just one entering halftime. Benjamin "blameF" Bremer was a huge factor in the Danes' first half comeback, dropping 18 kills for his team.

After swapping sides, Astralis took pistol and the two succeeding rounds to attain their first lead of the series, however nitr0's squad were not about to go down without a fight, as Liquid took the next six rounds in a row giving them a comfortable 14-10 advantage.

Despite losing, blameF racked up more kills than anyone else on Vertigo, with 40

Two rounds away from dropping the first map, the Danes clawed their way back into the game behind a crucial 1vs3 clutch in the 26th from Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander and blameF's incredible overall performance to bring both teams level again. In the end, Liquid denied Astralis the comeback thanks to a winning clutch from Keith "NAF" Markovic in the 30th, and closed out an extremely back-and-forth Vertigo, 16-14.

Ancient began with a similar theme to the first map, Liquid securing a quick 4-1 lead to put early pressure on Astralis. The Danes wouldn't allow the gap to be stretched out this time, however, taking five straight rounds behind the firepower provided by Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke and blameF. As the half came to an end, Liquid regained their advantage through exceptional coordination, converting four of the last five rounds and finding themselves up 8-7 at the switch.

Coming out of the break, Astralis took pistol and played lockdown defense against Liquid's advances onto site which allowed them to garner a 12-9 lead after six rounds in the second period. The North American side flipped the switch at the most crucial time, completely running over Astralis' defenses, including sensational clutches from the Captain himself, nitr0, en route to a 16-13 Ancient victory, and ultimately a Legends stage berth.

nope, we have seen by now that gla1ve is not able to get this team on track without zonic, they looked like trash in so many games and even fundamentals have not been there quite often. Makes me question the Astralis era in itself if you consider that gla1ve joined a top 3 team which has been drilled by karrigan before...

how so? karrigan built the Astralis team and got them to the very top, even if they choked all the time on stage. gla1ve came into a well drilled machine and didn't have to build them up from scratch like karrigan did. Now he had to do exactly that with the new team and he failed.
2022-05-12 15:11

He's got different qualities as an IGL, that does not make him worse. Karrigan has shown time and time again that he can build any roster from scratch, Gla1ve has not, but Gla1ve has proven that he can lead a good and experienced roster to consistent, important victories. He's also the most studied IGL in CS, his style of strategy may be solved unless he can reinvent himself, which I am sure he is trying and for now its not working.
2022-05-12 16:00
"into a well drilled machine" You mean Team Choke Mark?
2022-05-12 16:49
got them to the very top even if they choked bruh tf it makes no sense Karrigan got the team to a point where they were serious contenders for a trophy. He didn't get them to the very top. Very top means actually winning something, which they never did. Besides device dupreeh and xyp didn't believe in karrigan's calls hence why he was booted. Karrigan got them to the top of the scene, yes can't disagree here. But it was glaive who got them to the VERY TOP. There's a difference between TOP and VERY TOP. Discrediting glaive's achievements cause he's struggling rn is honestly the most disrespectful thing you can do

Konfig, blamef, Valde, Gla1ve... And Farlig with more experience. Most insane roster I can imagine. Not a single player that could replace anyone of them, except NiKo/Zywoo/S1mple/Ropz. But none of them will play in the same team, and BlameF is not far from NiKo/Ropz, especially not regarding consistency. Konfig has to settle in on the team, and they have to sign Valde. Then they will win the next Major. Bookmark this.

I agree for the moment but why bring a guy in who is supposed to take the AWP role and eventually develop into your star player just to take his role away from him after couple misses? Same shit with Lucky, where's the trust in the ability of these guys? All the respect for gla1ve but this behavior is just nowhere near professional (Astralis used to be rolemodels in terms of that)

I also felt that he could've developed into a rock solid awper with a little touch of device, also he was a pretty clutch player in Astralis wasn't he? At least way more than Xyp9x. Poor blameF... Imagine having a 1.44 rating, OVER 7 Maps, in other words having a better one then people like Niko or Zywoo and still not qualifying for the next stage. It's true xyp9x had a poor event, but I really hope that he will overcome this bad period and that the entire team will remain together. They deserve our respect & support.

2022-05-12 15:15
Well we've seen Astralis give warnings to players before, basically saying you have a few months to show us you can get back on track, like they did with dupreeh back in the day. This type of warning must have been given to xyp a while ago and it can only be because of the long contract they signed with him, that he is still there. He hasn't played well for a long time. This must be the straw that breaks the camels back.
2022-05-12 15:22
rating is not a really good metric to show how much is someone playing to win, a lot of his kills have 0 impact. Replacing Xyp will not do much because player who has star positions and roles is not playing to win, he's playing an off angle for duels.

He pads his impact in anti-eco where he goes forward to entry. Otherwise, if you exclude those rounds it's pretty slim. Impact of anti-eco rounds is not high on it's own, it's rather that math is flawed and he REEEEEAAAAAALLLLY abuses it as in - he really chases anti-eco kills real hard like he never chased a kill in his life. Otherwise, when it's a buy round he saves in 1v1 scenarios and plenty time to go. You can see the formula for impact your self, take one match and just exclude anti-eco rounds and see his impact then. That's even ignoring the fact that his exit multikills when he saves are worth next to nothing. It's an easy stat to manipulate and get a wrong impression.

Bro he just baited. Is always being last alive across the map in a random area while your entire team dies and basically playing aimbots to rank up kills something incredible?

Sure i always keep this opinion in mind, but we can also interpret in on the contrary: team just knows, if blamef dies first it is almost unwinnable round, and his is forced to take more space. Because if not him Astralis is just tier-2. But yeah it is annoying sometimes, it reminds me pre-Boomych Navi, when at most important maps s1mple did 35 kills and it was not enough, it is also problem in structure ofc.

Man, how I would wish for Stavn to replace xyp and dev1ce to replace Farlig, but obviously that's not gonna happen. Rn we have three relevant danish teams in Heroic, Flames and Astralis, but none of them are really contenders for anything other than disappointing or occasionally upsetting at big events. I believe the players are there for a potential danish powerhouse team with gla1ve, konf1g, blameF, Stavn and dev1ce/nicodoz
2022-05-13 08:32
I agree Xyp9x needs to either step up his game or step down. Kjaerbye comeback?
