shox: "The choice to put myself on the bench was inevitable in my eyes"

The French rifler opened up about his decision to be benched from Liquid's main roster and his six months with the team.

Heading into the new year, Liquid were one of the teams that experienced a major roster shake-up, with only Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski and Keith "NAF" Markovic being retained from the 2021 iteration of the lineup. Following the move, the North American organization welcomed Nick "nitr0" Cannella, Josh "oSee" Ohm, and Richard "shox" Papillon in hopes of changing their fortunes in 2022.

The team's performance being a step up from the previous year is debatable, however, as Liquid have fallen short of their goals and often bowed out of tournaments without being much of a threat to the elite teams. Eventually, change was needed and it came in the form of benching coach Eric "adreN" Hoag and rifler shox from the main roster.

Liquid bench shox and adreN

The Frenchman revealed through a linked statement posted on his official twitter account, which can be accessed in both French and English, his views on the half-year he spent in Liquid, the reasons for his decision to be placed on the bench, and the future of his career.

shox is taking some time off to recover from burnout as he ponders his future

Prior to joining the team, shox revealed his excitement to work with Liquid due to two reasons: the 'sport' and 'human' aspects. He praised his soon-to-be teammates such as nitr0 for his leadership and the potential oSee would bring to the team. shox also stated that his objective was to share his many years of experience playing the game with his new squad.

"My main goal was to bring back the maximum of experience that I have accumulated over the years," shox said, "Europe being ahead in CS compared to the US, I wanted to help them catch up and become as competitive as possible in the current meta."

"On the human side, it was agreed that I would be in the US for two specific periods of 3 months and 2 months in 2022. I discussed this with my wife, and we thought that it could be beneficial as a life experience, for me, for her, for the little one too, for us. Discovering a new culture, new ways of thinking, a new way of living can only be enriching to us and we were ready to embark on this 'American Dream'."

Things quickly took a hard turn when multiple issues regarding various tournaments caused the team to travel to Europe more often than expected, which greatly impacted shox and his family's aspirations of being together in the United States more often. With Liquid constantly on the move, the 30-year-old oftentimes found himself without a place to call home.

"As a consequence, I find myself having my life in France but having the life and agenda of an American player which immediately makes things very very complicated. I'm always on the move, I have no time to relax and recover from this overloaded CS schedule," shox explained.

"Not having a home in the US, I was either in a hotel during these periods or at the manager (Steve)'s house that I thank from the bottom of my heart because knowing my situation, he did everything to make my trip as pleasant as possible, many thanks for his accommodation."

The aim now is to join another team and start a new chapter, shox says

With regards to how the team was performing, shox shared some positives such as their ESL Pro League campaign, where they ended in 5-8th place, but he also mentioned how Liquid's form began to dip on American soil due to the vast differences in their training at home and in Europe. "I could see our level regressing when we were there because the American training is far from the quality we can have in Europe, so all the work we had done was gradually decreasing.

"I continued to give what I could give until the end, even though I felt like I was getting very tired with all the ups and downs but I couldn't do anything else, so I gritted my teeth and made it to the end. At the end of the Major, I had a burnout, I had to go home as soon as possible. That's why I wasn't present in Antwerp for the finals and I apologize for all the fans who were waiting for my presence."

shox also spoke about how to revert the toll taken from his time without a solid grounding for him and his family. "The human aspect that requires a balance in my life that I have not had for 6 months, the choice to put myself on the bench was inevitable in my eyes," he said.

"Since the major I have been doing everything to take care of myself in order to get better as quickly as possible such as getting a mental coach, family resources, sports, psychological escape," shox said, exclaiming that he felt a 'tremendous need' for such things. "I can already start to feel the benefits and I intend to continue in this direction in order to be fulfilled in my life but also to be ready at 200% for my next chapter with a new team."

He ended by expressing gratitude to both his teammates and those he worked with inside the Liquid organization, as well as stating that he's open to a new chapter in his career elsewhere.

YEKINDAR to stand in for Liquid at IEM Cologne

Since then, Liquid have announced the necessary changes to their roster ahead of their next Big Event, IEM Cologne, welcoming Damian "daps" Steele as the team's new coach in place of the benched adreN, and Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis temporarily standing in for the North American side as their fifth man for the upcoming million-dollar tournament in Germany.

+1 also this statement is something a washed player says to help them sleep: "My main goal was to bring back the maximum of experience that I have accumulated over the years," The team he was on literally had a core who won a grand slam and made an era alongside Astralis lol something he can only dream of achieving. if anything he probably learned more from them than he tried to impart.

2022-06-27 15:05

most people wouldnt disagree with me, what makes a player legendary is their achievements, and what they have given to the community, sure hobbit has won a major but c9 isn't a 'legendary' roster, at least yet, I know they are young and have years ahead of them and probably will win at least two majors but that is not the case as of now so no, they aren't legendary. I am not even saying that you need to be a boomer to be considered legendary, NA's most decorated hero Twistzz is young but is considered a legend by many, same with ropz. Then there are boomer legends who just did so much for the community like Get_Right, n0thing. When I think of current C9 there's not much, I can't remember iconic graffiti worthy plays, or an iconic moment where crowd cheered for them. Compare this C9 to Boston C9, and tell me these guys are more fun than them.

yeah no shit. this roster is new, and all the mentions players above have been playing t1 competitive for years. and being a new team dosent make them boring. so if ur saying only legendary players are interesting to watch i disagree with you and i think most people will as well.

y'all don't realise how this situation couldn't have a good outcome even if Liquid and Shox tried their best. The CSGO scene has transferred over to the EU and NA and SA teams are forced to adapt. Shox being the old respectable pro he is has a life, wife and children in France which he can't just leave behind whereas young NA talent might find this threshold less intimidating. Props to Shox and Liquid for trying to make it work and im sad it didn't work out in the end. Bodyy is not gonna move from HEET he built the team and they just qualified for ESL PRO LEAGUE so there chemistry is really good. Kioshima is never to be seen again on the csgo pro scene. NBK- and Amanek could have a good impact on T1 teams having them as a duo or smth if they build a team it would be with young guns from LDLC OL or the new GEN One . KennyS is a hard one I dont know what he really wants to do he's just living his streamer life and he likes it soo not sure if he will ever comeback. Shox Is complicated because he doesn't have his fraging ability anymore (more of a brain guy these days ) and as he stated he probably needs time to rest . 2022-06-24 17:18
Good thing he have his priorities in order: family comes first. If the family part is fine with a balance between work and recrational time then the performance will follow to a degree where the time spent with family/work will show an impact. This is where the younger players with no kids have an "advantage" counting in if they have no other mental issues since they can just pour in massive amounts of time in the game compared to a parent with a goal of having a somewhat close relationship with his child.

I would be so freaking exhausted and pissed at the same time, I wouldnt be able to focus on my game. Poor shox, hoping the best for him, he doesn't deserve the shit people throw at him.

It wasn't his job to suffer from jetlag so many times and to live from one hotel to another for 6 months, it's not sustainable. Relocating was a good idea and it was planned. Everything went to shit and it surely had an impact on his performance. Nothing crazy really. On the other hand yes, it made 0 sense to sign him.

Yes sure, all your points are valid (that's why I said that on the one hand you are right) but he didn't perform after all which is only thing that matters
2022-06-24 19:27
+1 first decent comment here. I think you really have to weigh in of not seeing your family for so long, it just breaks you up. Yes he performed shit but if you are not focused in the head you aren't focused on the game as well

Not only that, but when you have to relocate there are so many things to do especially when you're not single and even more when you have kids. A lot of formalities. And when you went through that shit, you realize it was all for nothing, I bet he must have been pissed haha. I would have been at least :D

Yea or he will stay in the US and go to a team or retire and live his life there, wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter to be honest.

half the hltv folks haven't touched grass or achieved anything substantial in life they'll keep making fun of peopls'e failures and ultimately, this is also a reflection of real life you can't quite help it

comeback mentally refreshed, shoxie. Dont touch pc for some time, take a trip to somewhere and spend time together with your family, good luck man
2022-06-24 18:21
come on shoxie
2022-06-24 18:22
poor shoxie was traumatized by NA :( i hope he gets better on a side note, i enjoyed the writing which considering this is hltv was quite surprising. gj mitsxha

Now it would be good for him to just chill in a Tier 2-3 French/Belgium line up, still get paid, less though, but will have less events and pretty much just wrap up the career as regardless if he says he's gonna invest 200% of himself into the next team, its not gonna make him better unless he drastically re-evaluates his future and what he really wants. If he wants to still be delivering results then he needs to put aside him family, yes, his family, kids, wife, etc no matter how rough that might sound, and concentrate on CS much more than on the family as if it was 10 years ago, but if he's not ready to do that then do not expect him to play better than how he played in Liquid regardless of what he says and wishes unless, like i said above, he plays for some tier 2-3 team and attends lesser caliber events or doesn't attend events at all and just plays onlince cups, then ya, he'll still top frag here and there, but that's where his career would end. Either way all the best, he's had a great career anyway, and even if he gets an offer from Tier 1 somehow, its best to decline it since he seems to really be talking bout his family and how he misses them and such more than about CS. Its life, its age, so ya, hope you make the right decision shoxie :) All the best. gg

What an idiot. Living in America was literally 99% of the premise for playing in Liquid. He just wasted everyone's time kekw

NA teams constantly fighting an uphill battle, no wonder the scene is struggling so badly...

They have the issue cuz money is their reason to play it. In Europe you would find many players on the server even without a chance for a salary

Thats not true at all. Moses made some good tweets about how hard it is to be an NA player when the entire scene is on a different continent.

I really wish him the best. I understand why he wanted to get some time of and spent it with your wife and kid, seeing them just for 1 month in 6 months is shit. Its sad that it didn't work out the way you wanted it to be, but I really hope you come back one day as coach or anist.
2022-06-25 01:21
Unsurprising let’s summarize: - has to play in NA, bad for his skill - has to play international team instead of French what he is used to - constantly on the plane, no real home - he said in interview nitr0 is kinda bad as IGL - he had to play different role So many things went wrong.

Respect to shox for being such a likable, down to earth cs go player

makes you wonder won't yekindar have the same fate as shox if he ends up getting signed by liquid?

Yekinder has no wife and kid to go to as far I know. He is young so more adaptable but we will see
2022-06-25 13:57
With a wife and kid, this decision to join Liquid was always short sighted and doomed. Not the mention the fact that from a CS perspective it made little sense either. Entirely expected and achieved nothing but no doubt a few juicy paychecks If shox is so keen on passing on his experience, then stay home and improve the grass roots french scene, spearhead a new french super team or something. But for god's sake, put your wife and kid first man

He wanted to do something different for once and experience something else then the French scene, so going to US to widen your view and learn some things isn't that unlogical. But yea, if we being honest it didn't turn out the way it was meant to be, maybe if he had good home base he could have done better but we may never know this for sure

That's some fckin courage shox showed up here. Some of hltv youngsters can't really understand that, it's really sad. I Hope he'll grow up from that experience and he will recover safely. Summer is nice in France, let's Hope he gets his fuel back, ready to pwn with another great team.
2022-06-25 14:54
Liquid sucks They did the same to S1mple. Imagen pick elige above GOAT. just a NA thing.

14 hours / 1 week cant be accepted
2022-06-25 18:38
TL will win cologne now with yekindar
2022-06-25 20:48
not being in eu It surely affected him but he is just not meant for tier 1 play anymore in my opinion. He's one of the goats but the age eventually gets the best of everyone unfortunately
2022-06-26 01:28
elige is the problem.
