Movistar Riders continue good run of form with victory over G2 at IEM Cologne
The Spaniards keep pushing the envelope with an opening victory in IEM Cologne’s group of death.
Movistar Riders continue to turn heads after winning ESL Challenger Valencia against Outsiders and clearing the IEM Cologne Play-In with two victories over MIBR and Vitality, this time with an opening group stage victory against G2 in Cologne.
The Spaniards are now through to the group of death’s upper bracket quarter-final on Friday at 19:30 , where they will play for a spot in the playoffs against the victor of ENCE vs. Vitality. On the other hand G2 are now in a precarious spot, as they will play the loser of the aforementioned series for survival in the tournament.

The series kicked off on Movistar Riders’ Vertigo, but it was G2 who got ahead after winning the first pistol round on the CT side. The lead didn’t last as it was the Spaniards who set the pace early to take a 3-7 lead. G2 brought it back to within one, but a big three-kill round by David "dav1g" Granado Bermudo on a pistol buy secured the lead at the half for his team, who went on to take the final round of the half to go up by two.
Alvaro "SunPayus" Garcia, who had a Dzhami "Jame" Ali-like performance with only four deaths in the first half after picking up the AWP, continued to bring down the hammer on the CT side as the Riders took a five round lead, 13-8.
Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač did everything in his hands to get his team back in the game with a strong performance as G2 got to within one despite Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov not showing up, but once again dav1g became the hero for the Riders with a four-kill round to get Riders up 14-12, which the Spaniards were able to build upon to close their pick out 16-12.
m0NESY downed three CTs in the first pistol round on Inferno to cleanse the palate after his underwhelming display on Vertigo as G2 took the early lead, but Movistar Riders struck right back with rifles in play with SunPayus once again leading the way for his team in a 9-6 half.
G2 won the second round buy despite letting the pistol round go in their attempt to bring things even, but Alejandro "mopoz" Fernández-Quejo Cano came alive for the Riders as the Spaniards powered to a commanding 14-8 lead before Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and company could retaliate. That spare round did not ease the pressure, however, and Galder "bladE" Barcena’s men cruised to a 16-9 victory to secure a spot in the Group A upper bracket quarter-final.
