FaZe end Movistar Riders' dream run; set up grand final against NAVI

Finn "karrigan" Andersen's men took the series in two maps to secure a spot in the best-of-five title decider.

FaZe are through to the grand final of IEM Cologne after putting an end to Movistar Riders' Cinderella run, an elevated level of form from the Spaniards that saw them win ESL Challenger Valencia before coming into Cologne guns blazing, beating MIBR, G2, Vitality, and Liquid en route to a 3-4th place finish. The Riders can go home from the loss with their heads held high, demonstrating impressive ability to compete at a top level as they close out the first half of the season.

FaZe, meanwhile, have continued their dominant run through the tournament in Germany, clinching a win on Ancient after a glorious 1vs3 clutch shut down a comeback effort from the Riders before easing through Nuke to take the series. With their victory, karrigan's troops have set up the dream grand final ahead of the tournament break, taking on Natus Vincere in a best-of-five to determine who will head into the off-season holding the crown as the best team in the world.

Additional glory is also on line as FaZe could become the first team to win all three of IEM Katowice, a Major, and IEM Cologne in the same year, but Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev and company could well play spoiler to those hopes as they trounced the European side in their last meeting at the BLAST Premier Spring Final. We'll find out whether they can do so again at 16:00 on Sunday as the teams go head-to-head in front of a sold out crowd in the LANXESS Arena.

FaZe and NAVI will face off in the dream end to the season

As play got underway in the second semi-final of the day, the Spaniards started off on their pick of Ancient, but you would have been hard pressed to guess as much, the offensive start to the infamously CT-sided map doing Alejandro "alex" Masanet's side no favors in the first half. A pistol round win courtesy of double kills from karrigan and Helvijs "broky" Saukants gave FaZe the early edge, a subsequent conversion against Movistar Riders' eco adding another round to the tally for a 2-0 start.

A pair of double kills from David "dav1g" Granado Bermudo helped his side answer back as they won three in a row to briefly take the lead, but it wasn't long before FaZe seized firm control in what became a dominant first half. There were just three rounds on the T side from that point onward that Movistar Riders managed to get more than two kills, one where they were up in a 5vs2 situation only to fall to the double AWP of broky and Robin "ropz" Kool, and another where they scored two opening kills with pistols before losing another 5vs3 advantage to the European combine.

It was only at the end of the half that one of those rounds were finally converted to grant the Riders their fourth, ending a half that was particularly dismal for Alvaro "SunPayus" Garcia, who had just one kill to his name. The swap to the defense for the Spaniards only raised the pressure as FaZe quickly won the second pistol round and scaled up to a 14-4 lead, but alex's side seemed to cope with it well, thanks in part to an inspired performance from dav1g.

Seven rounds straight followed for Movistar Riders, and a comeback began to look like a distinct possibility before FaZe finally made it to match point. It seemed like the Rides could keep the effort up though as they won the ensuing round, but it was the magnificent Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken that put a halt to that, securing a brilliant 1vs3 clutch to take the map over the line.

Nuke was a less intense affair, although Movistar Riders managed to put up a decent fight early on. A 4-1 lead on the map gave way to a strong T side effort from FaZe, the duo of Håvard "rain" Nygaard and ropz combining to win seven of the next nine rounds, eventually trailing by just one round by the break. After the sides swapped over though, it was utter dominance from FaZe, an almost complete lockout on the CT side seeing them drop just one round en route to a 16-9 finish.

They played soo well through this tournament is sad that they lost this way, my man Sunpayus didn't delivered as everyone expected in ancient and that costed the map, maybe in Mirage they could have won but I doubt it, this was pretty much doomed from the start, except if they overperformed massively or Faze played worse than usual

It will be at least 4 maps imo and sorry electronic is promising but BO5 is really something else and he never called it before and karrigan has much more experience in this regard, so imo Faze will win np.
2022-07-16 21:55
Idk what's wrong with you, this is what everyone wants to see a great BO5 finals and you guys are simply ruining the experience by saying stuff like this

check #32 I don't think I said something wrong, it is fact electronic never called BO5 before and karrigan has much more experience in this regard. Electronic looks as very decent IGL so far, but depth of your playbook required for BO5 is something else and I honestly don't think electronic has it atm. I am sure it will be amazing series, but this might be the difference maker.... .....also name checks out

I sincerely think that if you play at a level that these guys are playing at for years, I don't think NaVi needs to micromanage that much. Elec should be good at finding the weaker points in the defense and working on that, even on a BO5. They've got on par or higher fragging ability on NaVi. FaZe have been doing really good too tho, I don't see it is clear cut in advance or that either one would have a real upper hand. If NaVi are firing on all cylinders, I think FaZe will have a hard time.

I am sorry, but what does Elec experirience as IGL has to do with payboom for BO5? Its Blades job to get a game plan for BO5, Elec just needs to execute it. And up untill now my man Denis does it smoothly. Not to mention that he outcalled Karrigan last time and Karrigan cant read Elec as he could read Boombl4
2022-07-17 00:59
Also see the fact he has been one of the smartest in game and has called before with boombl4 during his early days What fact are you talking about. Your fact is nothing but assumption from his roles and not his style and the way he plays the game . hltv.org/news/34205/electronic-i-always-.. And wtf is name checks out, I didn't even say anything about faze or NAVi winning I am just happy to watch them play in the finals NAVI HAS 8 MATCH WIN STREAK WITH ELEC CALLING LOL I feel sorry for your parents. Flair and name check out btw

2022-07-16 21:53
Faze can take it if ropz plays tomorrow like he did on nuke today. The crowd will be on Faze's side, but otherwise I think Navi will have the edge. Navi and Faze are clearly head and shoulders above everyone else, but otherwise the top20 is wide open. Literally anyone can beat anyone. Doesn't even make sense to talk about tiers any more - the competition at the top is so intense. Huge kudos to MRS - they proved that they really are a top10 or even top5 team.

That's such a good point. Honestly right now people argue if it's FaZe Era or NaVi Era, but with these two so far ahead you could argue that it's a FaZe and NaVi Era where the top two teams are just miles ahead of the competition. Regardless of the result tomorrow I think this is far from the last NaVi vs FaZe grand final.

I mean what possibly more could you ask for? -Both teams hold their picks -Teams trade picks -Final Map goes 30 rounds with an INSANE play to push one team over the line. Dude if every BO5 was this good I would absolutely love them.

In terms of picks and map wins I think it went broadly as expected: - Faze is clearly the best team on inferno and nuke right now; - Faze is solid on mirage while Navi struggled on it vs Astralis yesterday; - Navi is insane on d2 while Faze is poorly on it; - Faze is not great on ancient, but they did not want to pick nuke as they knew it would be left over anyway and picking it would give Navi the CT-side start. My prediction was that it would go to five maps but that Faze would close it out fairly comfortably IF ropz plays nuke like he did yesterday against MRS - that did not happen. I am surprised ancient went the distance - I thought Navi would win that comfortably, but it's also clear that this map has a lot of problems right now. I don't think it's particularly fun to watch given how lopsided the halves are. Vertigo is a far superior map, but Navi clearly does not play it.
2022-07-18 00:11

I agree so much with this. Ancient's problems with viewership and playing are awful. No map should be THAT much CT sided. Old Nuke had the same problem. Thankfully Art & FURIA (+Krieg Meta) kinda changed the landscape a bit and made T sides much more enjoyable. Ancient needs a major rework or a replacement ASAP.
