IEM Rio Major qualifier details announced; registration open

The first set of qualifiers kick off on August 15.

The qualifier dates and registration links for the IEM RIo Major have been announced by ESL, taking place across seven regions and encompassing 18 open qualifiers and four closed qualifiers to determine the path to the November Major.

In Europe, four open qualifiers will be held to determine a total of twenty teams that will advance to the region's Regional Major Ranking event, where they will join the European teams from PGL Major Antwerp's Legends Stage to battle for spots in Rio. All matches will be best-of-one single-elimination with the exception of the qualifying round, which will be best-of-three.

The dates for the IEM Rio qualifiers have been announced

The same format will be followed in North America, where two teams from each of the three open qualifiers will earn spots at the Americas RMR. The South American equivalent meanwhile will grant a total of seven spots: the first two open qualifiers will see two teams each qualify, and the third and final one will grant three spots, with the complete field joining Liquid, FURIA, and Imperial at the RMR.

The qualifiers in Asia, Oceania, China, and the Middle East will follow a different format, with each region having two open qualifiers lead into a four-team double-elimination closed qualifier. The winners from each region will advance to one larger Asia RMR, with two teams making it through to Rio.

I did, and yes while the main team probably would beat nxt by some margin it still doesn’t make them a good team. Nxt have more potential as a team. Dexter has made it far like two or three times in 1.5 years and haven’t been able to get momentum. Thats a sign that your team lacks tactical competence since they cant react to teams actually putting time to watch their demos. Nxt on the other hand have been a stable t2 team with siuhy. The reason for why they are so low in the rankings is because they did barely play an official after jdc left but are looking right on track again with a great win over forze and who only narrowly lost to fnatic. Yes the main team is better now but I won’t count it as anything before they show a couple of good results and improvement in a row when the season starts.

well only one EG squad out of the 3 will be allowed to compete in the open qualifiers btw. Even if the others compete and make it to the main stage, all but 1 will have to pull out of the closed qualifier. With the speculation however, EG is about to get EU imports for their main roster soon so i guess they will be the one competing and also making it. Other 5 teams can be GG, ATK, Complexity, BnB and some random. EG.PA however can definitely make it to closed qualifier if they were to compete , not sure about Carpe Diem

nah mate they will definitely make it. NA Tier 2 scene is sadly miles behind T2 EU and the rumored EG imports are good enough to do well for the Major qualification imo.

Gaules streamed Imperial games for last major qualis and their first two games were like this - 100k people watching a bunch of friends playing the most famous names in the country, great stuff. Imperial was even saved from a WO by one of them, Fallen sent them some shirts as a thank you for their fair play.

I have the feeling that this event will be a big flop, since no BR teams will reach playoffs and the crowd will be far from what people are expecting... I hope I'm wrong
2022-07-23 00:22
10 replies
Very difficult for that to happen because Brazilians are already aware of how bad the BR scene is currently, so if any Brazilian team don't reach the Playoffs it won't be a disappointment. Not to mention that we never know when in history there will be a Major in Brazil again, the people who go, will be paying for a unique experience.

I think you missed the previous international events held in Brazil: Pro League S4 Finals (São Paulo) - 2016 ESL One Belo Horizonte - 2018 BLAST São Paulo - 2019 Dreamhack Open Rio - 2019 With the exception of the first, where SK reached the grand finals, the crowds sucked and the arenas were far from packed. Yeah now it will be a major, but FURIA and Imperial fooled the world by playing very well on last major, so everybody is expecting a massive and loud crowd, something that I feel that will happen more on the group stage (since Imperial will probably qualify for it, at least).
2022-07-23 00:51

In 2019 we had hoped that the BR scene would return to the peak of 2016-2017, today those who follow CS in Brazil already know that our level is so horrible to the point of celebrating winning a Qualify as if it were a title... events from 3 years ago as an example doesn't make any sense, not to mention that none of these is a Major, which by itself the Hype is triple

Remembering events from 3 years ago makes total sense because BR crowd is heavily based on how FalleN team is on the moment of the event (if they qualify, to begin with). If you follow closely the numbers of Gaules stream you know that just by the fact of FalleN playing, he gets 3x more viewers than FURIA vs FaZe for example. So, since Imperial sucked so hard post-major, I have bad hopes. Another factor is that fnx will not play, so even less hype for the team, although the team level will raise with chelo or whoever replaces him.

????? Most of the people picked them 0-3 on the play-in, they not only didn't went 0-3 but they advanced to the next stage destroying ForZe on the last match of the event! On the Major itself, people again picked them 0-3 massively... and what happened? They reached 2-2 beating the #4 team of the world at the time (Cloud9)! They were ONE bo3 from achieving playoffs. If you don't think their run was magical you are insane. The enrie world praised them for their performance, nobody expected them to go so far.

It's a great way to develop Asian CS, since only TyLoo/IHC/Rare Atom would fight for the spots, probably. This way, the non-Chinese teams will be way more motivated and will for sure evolve a lot fighting for those spots.

Yea like it makes sense and all but events like these are crucial for the region and their future. If you have 8 teams getting the opportunity to play in Europe or wherever the rmr is held with all similar skills they just gain so much more experience and improve so much more, the rmr is the only event where that can happen. Take a look at the old minor system they had 8 teams and some actually won games instead of going 0-3

China receiving its own qualifier is such bs. Mongolia has better teams than china but has to qualify with "the rest of asia". If thats how Valve wants to do the asian qualifiiers they should at least make sure chinese teams do not participate in the asia, mea and oceania qualifiers.
