Video: Pros weigh up importance of Majors vs. Intel Grand Slam

The Intel Grand Slam is a marker of how dominant a team can be in a given period, and the prize pool is an immense $1,000,000 — but how important is it compared to winning a Major? We spoke to some professional players at IEM Cologne to find out.

Winning a Major has always been lauded as the crowning achievement in the books of every CS:GO player, a dream that starts from their careers' infancies and remains with them until retirement or fulfillment. For the majority of our game's lifespan, no tournament has quite reached the individual acclaim that taking home a Major title brings — although nowadays, IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne often occupy the step just below.

In 2017, an achievement that could rival that of winning a Major finally emerged as ESL and Intel announced the Grand Slam, a $1,000,000 prize that would be awarded to teams that could win four out of ten $200,000 ESL or DreamHack events. The title also went hand in hand with marking when a team was completely dominating the scene, something that was proven by the first three winners — Astralis, Liquid, and Natus Vincere.

rain says winning Majors is more important than taking home the Intel Grand Slam

Ahead of season 4, a new ruleset was announced, making the achievement marginally more difficult to attain, but not by a substantial amount. Ever since, the race for the season 4 crown has been on, with FaZe currently sitting on three wins as they look to secure the $1,000,000 prize at ESL Pro League Season 16 or the IEM Rio Major later this year.

Although the European combine already took home their first Major crown at PGL Major Antwerp, Håvard "rain" Nygaard still gave the Valve-sponsored event the edge over the Grand Slam, stating that the Intel title was "something that comes if you're good enough" whereas the Major is a "special feeling." To see what other pros thought, including the likes of Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke, Robert "Patsi" Isyanov, David "frozen" Čerňanský, Andrei "arT" Piovezan, check out the video above, or head on over to our YouTube channel for other interviews, episodes of HLTV Confirmed, news recaps, and more.

I think they should move from two majors a year to one single one. First place takes a mill. Like with Stockholm, but that was due to Covid… A major needs more money… a way bigger purpose to those true3 teams that actually qualify. Would mean much much more and their ahit would be worth more. We deserve a 2mill major

I agree that one major a year would make it far more important, although I don't think anyone watches any of the big tourneys for the prize money (as mauisnake said on twitter a few weeks ago) and I agree this reason is on the bottom of my list

I think the timeline of its introduction to the scene is very important. Major were so hyped during the time of its introduction in the CS esports and helped CS establish a lot in the eSports scene. Grand slam was introduced so late when the scene had already established and Majors were so hype and most prestigious events already that no one really gave shit about grand slam (atleast not more than the major)
2022-08-01 05:44

No i did not swap anything. It's less unlikely to fluke a final when you only have to win 2 maps (aka BO3) than when you have to win 3 maps (aka BO5) Major final should be BO5, not BO3, to make it almost certain than the better team wins the most important (or what should be the most important tourney) tourney of the year.
2022-08-01 15:27
Rain gets it, but that you've people that thinks otherwise just shows how little love CS gets from Valve. We're always gonna be GabeN unwanted child and he's just forced to put up with us, CS Majors would be a lot bigger if Valve puts a little effort into it and it's not just about the prize money.
2022-07-31 19:36
The issue with the prestige is you could win a grand slam at something like IEM Dallas, which just sounds extremely unimpressive. You could be Liquid and never win a Major, but win a Grand Slam, and no one would consider it that important. The main thing about (current) Majors is they will always have the largest mix of top teams. They're simply the biggest tournament, competition-wise, that you can win. It's not really about the money. People consider FaZe's major just as big an achievement as Navi's, despite it being half the money won.

Major probably feels better to win as it revolves around a specific place and storylines if that makes sense, and thus more memorable, but a grand slam is a bigger achievement for sure.

Igs is miles harder to achieve but it simply doesn't have the prestige (nor will it ever) that any Major has. With the Major you have a ton of things to look forward to such as stickers, pick'ems, souvenirs, etc. They are well established as the 'ultimate' tournaments in csgo and the audience gets to feel engaged with it. Meanwhile, the igs, while fantastic to earn and an achievement that should be respected for its difficulty, sinply doesn't have that same connection to the audience nor could it ever unless valve favoured ESL over other TOs. Doesn't help that it kind of came late to be established, so not many people even know about it
2022-08-01 05:55
Major is the highest achievement for player but IGS is harder to get win a Major = left a legacy in form of Valve's products win IGS = well respected in CSGO scene as an era/history

The Major is the real deal. In the other tournaments teams can come from invitations and partnerships, but the Major is an actual global tournament where everyone can compete. The Grand Slam is a consolidation of the most dominant team at prestige level in that season
