Cloud9 on the brink of EPL playoffs after demolishing Movistar Riders

With a winless ESL Pro League campaign so far, Movistar Riders face elimination.

Cloud9 secured their third victory of ESL Pro League Season 16's group stage with a comfortable 2-0 win over Movistar Riders, winning Inferno (16-7) and Vertigo (16-4). Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov and Timofey "interz" Yakushin were Cloud9's star duo in the series, posting 43 and 41 kills respectively.

The CIS squad is now near certain to qualify for the playoffs, as the only combination in which they don't secure a top three spot today is if FURIA beat Liquid 2-1 as well as Eternal Fire overcome Evil Geniuses.

Sitting on a 0-3 record following the loss, Movistar Riders are facing elimination, with the Spanish squad relying on several other results to go their way, as well as needing to win their two remaining matches against Evil Geniuses and Eternal Fire for a chance to make playoffs.

interz was the top performer in the series

Cloud9 got off to a hot start on Inferno, with interz winning a 1vs3 clutch in the second round to give his team a platform for a dominant half. The CIS squad won six in a row before Movistar Riders got on the board with two close rounds. With Cloud9 winning the next, an 11-4 scoreline was the best Movistar Riders could muster, due to the Spaniards never establishing their economy.

A pistol round win for Movistar Riders looked to start a comeback for the Spaniards, but it was not to be. Cloud9 looked comfortable on their CT side as soon as they got a full buy, winning the five rounds they required to win the map. interz provided an unlikely source of firepower on the map, as he put up 27 kills and 109 ADR to move the series on to Vertigo.

Vertigo began with Movistar Riders winning the pistol round and taking the lead in the game. Cloud9 won the force buy straight away, equalizing the scores at 1-1 and then running away with the map with 14 straight rounds, absolutely dominating their opponents on their way to a massive lead at halftime. Movistar Riders came closest to getting another round on the board in the ninth, when sh1ro and Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov denied them by converting a 2vs4 post-plant situation.

Closing out the game was a mere formality for Cloud9, with a pistol win for Movistar Riders prolonging the game for a few more rounds. Cloud9 were quick to put a stop to that, securing a 16-4 victory as soon as their economy allowed it.

Everyone knows the ranking is wrong right now due to roster changes and the fact that c9 hasn’t played in ages. The ranking isn’t representative of a power ranking by the people at hltv, rather a representation of recent results, which have been a lot better for movi than c9. The whole #5 business is irrelevant.

I am sorry if this was already being discussed, if not, could Striker ask nafany/hobbit why they pick t side on enemy pick so often next time when he will be interviewing them, no other team does this. I get that they're good, but CTs still dominate the game and that mirage against imperial still haunts me. Thanks

+1, this is a great question I also would like to see answered.

Nafany was asked I believe after first game. He said that groove picks maps and sides and they didn't want to give away some of their CT strats.

I see, thanks. I'm now concerned about their CT pistol rounds, they've won only one across 6 maps. I dont expect them winning so many t rounds against big names like g2, vitality, faze, navi so winning pistols on ct after first half will be extremely important, i hope they'll work on that part. They used to be so crisp with those USP-S

From my memory their pistol rounds have been bad for ages. Groove mentioned this in one of older Gambit vlog. Their force buys seem a bit better as they used to give up 3 rounds in a row very easily. Small sample though.

Nafany said in an interview that they are saving starts lol and the Groove does the selections. youtube.com/watch?v=kHJQ2nj9nJo
