Evil Geniuses take down Movistar Riders to claim second win in EPL

Sanzhar "neaLaN" Iskhakov's men keep their playoff hopes alive with a victory over the Spaniards.

Evil Geniuses secured their second win at ESL Pro League Season 16 after defeating Movistar Riders 2-0. The Spanish squad struggled to make an impact on the T side of Overpass (9-16) before fading away on their pick of Nuke (8-16). The North American squad can still secure a top 3 finish in Group C but will need several results to go their way across the last two days of play.

This is the fourth consecutive defeat for Alejandro "alex" Masanet's men at this edition of EPL who are already eliminated from playoff contention and now sit at the bottom of Group D with only one map against Liquid to their name. The last match for Movistar Riders will see them lineup up against Eternal Fire, the other struggling team in the group.

autimatic was the star of the show with a 1.60 rating across the series

The action between Movistar Riders and Evil Geniuses got started on the latter's map pick of Overpass. Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte opened up the match with a 4k on the pistol round which gave the North Americans the early advantage on the T side. The 24-year-old started off well, but it was Timothy "autimatic" Ta to shine the most for Evil Geniuses as the American rifler registered a 1.52 rating during the first half.

Movistar Riders came back from a 3-7 disadvantage thanks to their ability to defend the A bombsite, with Raúl "DeathZz" Jordán Nieto performing well around the mid area. The Spanish squad salvaged a 7-8 scoreline going into the break.

Evil Geniuses's breakthrough came early in the second half after alex's men took the second pistol round, but failed to build on that success. The North American Deagles halted the Spaniards around the toilets position to kickstart a period of defensive dominance for neaLaN's men. Evil Geniuses squad only dropped one more round on their way to a 16-9 victory.

Things only got worse for Movistar Riders as they struggled to make an impact on the T side of Nuke. Evil Geniuses were comfortable on their opponents' map pick, and the North American CT aggression initially worked wonders, with neaLaN's men cruising to a 9-1 lead. Facing elimination, the Spanish squad managed to stabilize and take five consecutive rounds to reduce the deficit to 6-9.

Evil Geniuses claimed the second pistol round courtesy of a crucial triple-kill by Brehze, kickstarting a short streak that put the North Americans on the brink of victory with a 13-6 scoreline. autimatic was on fire, and together with Brehze and Jadan "HexT" Postma, powered his squad to a 16-8 victory to take the series.

I think we can all thank Sunpayus for killing off a team and 4 people's careers while also going to a team that isn't going to win anything. Thank you Sunpayus

ENCE is probably paying him more, so why would he not take the offer? As much as people want to stay with a team, they also have to look out for themselves and make wise financial decisions. He also needs to make money because being a CSGO pro is his job right now.

Tournament prize money in Tier 1 isn't a motivating factor for players , they already get paid alot as per their salaries and sticker money so there was little for Sunpayus to stay regional .

ENCE most likely has a higher base salary than Movistar Riders does. Tournament winnings are more like a bonus whereas the base salary is kind of what matters more, at least in the beginning of a CSGO pro's career, or any pro gamer for that matter.

flukepayus lol. He is the one who got lucky, stealing paychecks in ence for 6-12 months even though EVERYONE KNOWS HE IS A FLUKE

Bro lmao, that movistar was a fluke it was just that deathz and dav1g were overperforming, they were never truly going to win anything big

I agree. I think he's a good replacement for Sunpayus and that he needs time to adjust, as well as the rest of the team. Movistar Riders have always been a "surprise package" team in the sense that they are inconsistent. They could always beat top 10 teams in 1 event, but then they'll get rofl stomped the next event they attend (or play online).

nah, it's more in the mental side of things, i'm sure they'll be good again in 2023, maybe not as good as they were between march and the player break, but i believe they can be pretty solid again

I hope so. I have faith that they'll be good again. It'd be nice to see more diversity in terms of multiple countries having good teams as opposed to only a handful of countries being able to field good teams. Though I have to say, Spain was a lot better at CS 1.6 than they have been in CSGO since its initial release 10 years ago. The same is true for a lot of other countries though, such as China, South Korea, and so forth.

A lot of NA orgs with money don't know how to spend it lol. Cloud9 and Complexity with their jokes of rosters for their "Colossus" and "Juggernaut" projects respectively. Now, EG joined the party with their "Blueprint" project. What a shame that while NA has some decent talent, they choose to muddy the waters with shit rosters and not supporting the Tier 2 scene with more online and LAN events, even if the prizepools aren't as big as they used to be a few years ago.

This is one of the biggest reasons as to why NA has become a joke after CS 1.6 and CS: Source. They were first to jump onboard the CSGO ship, but then EU, CIS, Asia, and AU/NZ caught up. It just boggles my mind as to how one region can have so many resources, yet everything is just managed poorly and they squander their own hopes of being able to compete with the rest of the world. I personally find it a bit tough to be an NA fan when a feasible goal is within arm's length and 9 times out of 10, they throw it away (the NA teams).

It's because video games still aren't as mainstream in the US as they are in EU. People don't see the money in it when MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, etc are still so much bigger. Bars aren't gonna make money putting on a match of noodle-thin armed CSGO players screaming like nerdgins. I still cringe when I see the cheesy entrances of these professional dweebs. Only EU cares because they have futbol and nothing else. Muricans demand physicality in their sports.

That's true regarding the differences between EU and NA. I don't think video games will become that mainstream in NA though, like - ever. At least not for a few more years.

Tbf the initial coL roster had real potential, was “cheap” to establishment and were extremely consistent. oBo leaving the roster completely ruined them, but I wouldnt consider the initial coL a failure at the level C9 was.

Complexity is going to get destroyed in playoffs. I think they got lucky and that other teams like Astralis and ENCE played worse than they should have. If EG somehow make playoffs, I think the same thing will happen for them too.

Imagine an NA org that knows how to spend their money to acquire a competent roster. Oh wait, that ship sailed back in 2018 with Cloud9's ELEAGUE Boston Major winning roster. I mean, Liquid have always had a relatively competent roster, but they haven't won much in the past year or so, so there's that I guess.

Even when liquid was prime in 2019 they still lacked when it came down to their roster, that's why they never won against astralis, they had a lot of talented riflers but no awper to combat device
