Cloud9 end FaZe's Grand Slam hopes at EPL

Finn "karrigan" Andersen's men will not claim the Intel Grand Slam in Malta.

Cloud9 became the second team to secure a spot in the semi-finals of ESL Pro League Season 16 after defeating FaZe 2-1. Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov's men barely conceded Inferno (13-16) before coming back on Ancient (16-9) and Mirage (16-11) to repeat their victory over the Europeans at IEM Dallas.

The loss means FaZe's Intel Grand Slam charge in Malta has come to an end. The European squad advanced from Group B with a 4-1 record and reached the quarter-final after an unconvincing win against Complexity before falling to the Russians. FaZe now has five tournaments left to claim the $1,000,000 award, and if they succeed to advance from the upcoming RMR, their next opportunity to claim the IGS will be at the IEM Rio Major 2022.

Ax1Le was the star of the show across the series with a 1.54 rating

Cloud9 opened up the series by taking the opening pistol round on Inferno over FaZe to claim an early 4-0 lead. The Russians' advantage was slowly eroded following three successful holds of the A bombsite which also got the CT economy in shape for the rest of the half. Helvijs "broky" Saukants was a solid performer for the defenders with a 1.59 rating and 100% KAST while helping the Europeans edge the half 8-7 ahead.

The match remained equally as close after switching sides as neither side maintained the lead for long stretches of time. Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov came alive on the CT side while Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov carried his solid performance from the first half, with the duo propelling Cloud9 to a 13-12 advantage. FaZe responded with four consecutive hits on the B site which allowed them to steal the lead and close the map with a 16-13 scoreline.

Cloud9 were fantastic on their pick of Ancient. Despite failing to build on their pistol round victory, the Russian squad exploited FaZe's B site defense to claim an eight-round winning streak. broky struggled across the first half, only registering one frag and a 0.46 CT rating as the Europeans salvaged a 6-9 scoreline going into halftime.

FaZe were unable to get themselves back in the game despite taking the second pistol round. Cloud9's force buy on the seventeenth round shut down the European offense on the B site, stealing the momentum away from the Ts. The Russian squad only dropped one more round before evening out the series with a 16-9 victory to take their seventh consecutive LAN win on Ancient.

Cloud9 continued to surprise FaZe with a few aggressive rounds on the T side of Mirage. Several hits from the Russian offense on the A bombsite put the karrigan's team at a 4-9 disadvantage, but a short resurgence late in the half allowed them to go into the second half only trailing 6-9 behind.

sh1ro came alive after switching to the CT side, but it was Ax1Le to shine the brightest once again. The 20-year-old rifler registered a 1.99 rating on the CT side to power Cloud9 to a 16-11 victory, eliminating FaZe from the event.

even though the win was deserved because C9 was better, it's a bit of a stretch to say they are looking solid on LAN, there is still a massive difference between a studio and idk how many people at Cologne or Katowice for example. Dallas was a start, and this is a good sign for sure, not quite there yet but they are young and still have a lot of time

Sure is, but much of the prestige from lan comes from being able to perform in front of a huge crowd and the pressure that adds. Playing on lan in front of your friends and 20 other people isn't comparable at all

I always thought 2021 Navi was better. Just think, this year Navi (with boombl4) hasn’t really played that well compared to last years second half, and they still managed to stay top 2 and reach finals… And every time Navi played faze in finals at least 1 Navi player was playing very badly (S1mple in cologne in a few maps for example). 2022 Faze is amazingly good but I’m convinced 2021 Navi would beat them.

honestly, there is no point in trying to compare because we will simply never know who was better, both teams have their pros and cons for whos better. Faze arguably a tougher opposition, navi was practically unbeatable every tournament and the list goes on for both of them. lets just agree that both teams are insane and leave it at that, we can enjoy CS without kicking teams down

How?vita was literally doing 1v9 with zywoo and g2 2v8 with niko and hunter, liquid where playing with washed fallen as an igl and stewie2k who was washed as well. C9 and heroic still getting used to lan by the time. Astralis core being broke and faze stuck with washed olof and rain who also wasn't performing in his peak like he is doing right now it was definitely a low level competition for navi overall in second half of 2021.

Navi themselves worse than 2021 due to loss of boombla. Vitality same thing in 2022 before adding spinx, G2 with nexa > G2 with alexsiB, liquid same things before trying Yekindar, C9 better and heroic better in 2021 than 2022. Astralis same shit in 2022, they're even worse than in 2021. Only faze and ence improved, and movistar came up on top for a short time. All the other teams were worse

c9 and heroic actually become better this yr especially c9 who had difficulty to win anything in lan last yr they won iem dallas this yr. G2 aleksib vs g2 nexa is 50/50 i would say, faze become 10x better this yr and defeated navi in every single tournament even with boomb14. Only vitality become terrible after roaster change.

Aleksib still helped g2 to get into kato finals, blast semis and even in dallas quater finals considering the fact m0nesy was bad in first half and jackz with .95 ratings was a burden as well. And c9 last yr didn't won anything after lan started they only remain dominate till the time it was online.

Online was for 2 years, other teams had lot of time to cope up. It's just an excuse for teams who couldn't win anything. The main thing lacking in online era was motivation and if you don't have motivation to win, you don't deserve it.
