FURIA enlist co-owner André Akkari as coach for IEM Rio Major

The team will have their professional poker player co-owner backing them up during their home Major.

FURIA will have neither of their regular coaches standing behind them in their IEM Rio Major campaign, and will instead field co-owner André Akkari in the hope his presence will benefit the team in tense situations during matches.

The information was first reported by Dust2.com.br, who reached out to ESL to confirm that the change had taken place in time for the roster deadline, as well as to FURIA for comment on the reason for the swap.

Akkari said the decision for him to join the team for the Major was made by head coach Nicholas "guerri" Nogueira, who hopes that the co-owner can help in high-pressure situations. Akkari is a seasoned poker professional, having won a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2011, and co-founded FURIA in 2017 alongside CEO Jaime Pádua and fellow investor Cris Guedes.

André Akkari will coach FURIA in Rio

By stepping in for the Major, Akkari will take the place of assistant coach Marcos "tacitus" Castilho, who stood behind FURIA at the previous two PGL Majors and their respective RMRs, as well in Stockholm for the IEM Rio Americas RMR.

FURIA's head coach guerri is not eligible to stand behind the team at Valve-sponsored events due to his ban for the coaching bug, which was imposed by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) in late 2020.

guerri received concessions toward his ban due to fully cooperating with the esport watchdog's investigation and offering evidence of his innocence, resulting in a reduced ban length for ESIC member events. However, Valve refused to apply those concessions to their own bans, and as a result guerri remains unable to participate in Valve Majors until the end of 2023.

Akkari stated on Twitter that FURIA made every effort to resolve the situation with Valve, enlisting lawyers in hopes that they could argue their case and have guerri's ban lifted in time for the Major. The effort proved to be in vain however, and instead Akkari himself will be behind the squad during their campaign, while both guerri and tacitus will back up the team off the server with pre-match and analytical help.

FURIA's roster on the server for the IEM Rio Major is:

Brazil Andrei "arT" Piovezan
Brazil Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato
Brazil Yuri "yuurih" Santos
Brazil André "drop" Abreu
Brazil Rafael "saffee" Costa

Could just mostly be that they feel the co owner will be better for mentality, since most of the analyst's work is done outside the server and hey might not be the best coach FaZe had their team manager as coach instead of innersh1ne and won antwerp

Analysts may know more but most people already have game plan going in and it’s better to get a hype man coach for a team like furia. A very momentum based team
2022-10-15 03:24
they actually had innersh1ne at Stockholm, so in their case it was trial and error i suppose
2022-10-15 03:51
faze said that it was better to have the analyst close to the coach offline so they could fully focus on preparaing for the upcoming matches

bro, I literally live from poker and I can assure you do not understand what you are talking about. Luck would be at max 20%, poker sucess comes from making loads of good decisions in a decent amount of time, so it is always designed for the long run. Then, luck will no longer impact, don't bs about stuff you don't know.
2022-10-15 16:59

no matter what you do for living, poker will always be related to gambling. even if luck is 20% or 0% relevant. you will find a poker table in the same room as a slot machine. they are really linked in the eyes of the public.

Now you are just changing subject, I'm not talking about public perception (btw, your public perception, as you can not speak for the whole) but about facts, and the fact is that it is a heavily skill game, otherwise there would not be pro players and the same people winning over and over the big tournaments

well, you are the one who started disagreeing with the "art is gonna start gambling [...], thanks akkari" joke. Saying that it is not gamble. I just stated that poker evolves, at least partially, luck (as you agreed) like pistols in cs, that's why my joke worked in first place. And in #108 I was justifying why the joke worked. In short, you're mad at a joke and came here trying to deconstruct it. Congrats.
