ALEX confirms fnatic exit, announces break from competition

The British in-game decided to not return to competitive play due to health issues.

fnatic and Alex "ALEX" McMeekin have mutually agreed to part ways, the player announced on Twitter. The 27-year-old has been a free agent since the agreement was made "a while back", but revealed that he will remain on the sidelines as he continues to recover from underlying health issues.

The Brit's departure puts an end to his stint on the inactive roster where he was put in May alongside Valentin "poizon" Vasilev to make space for new signings Nico "nicoodoz" Tamjidi and Fredrik "roeJ" Jørgensen.

ALEX will continue on a competitive break to focus on recovery

ALEX joined fnatic in August 2021 alongside ex-Cloud9 teammate William "mezii" Merriman, kickstarting the team's new era as an international roster. During 27-year-old's time with fnatic, the squad saw constant roster changes with Jack "Jackinho" Ström Mattsson, Iulian "regali" Harjău, Owen "smooya" Butterfield, and poizon all wielding the AWP over the course of his tenure as IGL.

The roster instability only worsened after the announcement that Ludvig "Brollan" Brolin was joining Ninjas in Pyjamas ahead of the RMR tournament for PGL Antwerp 2022. fnatic left the event in 12-14th place once again failing to qualify for the Major and the Brit was benched a month later.

"I decided not to join a team after fnatic due to the deterioration of stomach issues," ALEX stated on Twitter. "I’ve now decided to take a break to concentrate on getting better, instead of living with the issues."

"Since I was unable to perform my duties as a professional player and fnatic couldn’t sell me because of them we mutually agreed to part ways, they were very supportive when I told them what was happening and I thank them for that. For now, I have and will continue to take a break."

fnatic currently have the following lineup:

Denmark Fredrik "roeJ" Jørgensen
Denmark Nico "nicoodoz" Tamjidi
Sweden Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson
Netherlands Dion "FASHR" Derksen
United Kingdom William "mezii" Merriman

United Kingdom Jamie "keita" Hall (coach)

Agree ‘sort of’. However look at how many pros they are, and only a few have health issue such as this.

It's hard to say, problems could be there undiagnosed. Outside of the pro scene a few friends have developed stomach issues as of late, in their twenties, shit situation to be in stomach is extremely important.

I'd say the types of illnesses have changed and some have increased in younger people over the years such as illnesses to do with the heart etc. and yeah I see what you mean. Stomach issues maybe another one.

Just gotta start going outside at a young age, do physical activities, eat dirt and sand. Your immunity will be more stronger than g2's position in the major.

ngl, health issues are always sad to hear. but what happened at FNC at the beginning of this year was just inexcusable and poor display of IGLing.

ofc the player swaps didnt help. i watched all their games during RMR Antwerp, and it literally looked worse than random fpl games. There was no structure whatsoever. Maybe i set the bar too high, but from an IGL with his reputation, this was just extremely disappointing to witness, especially if you consider their core with mezii, ALEX and KRIMZ.

yeah, that lineup couldve and shouldve worked, it couldve been really nice with Brollan. but did you see the sm00ya clip in which he talked about the mandatory monday discord calls they made him do with ALEX? that was really weird to hear tbh

yeah that part was weird and i think both ALEX and smooya was at fault there. ALEX was too low key and smooya too stubborn. I dont think fnatic management is bad as in evil like how mouz and astralis deal with their players but they have some incompetence going on.

true, i didnt expect them to announce mezii as IGL, especially when the whole CPH lineup was available, but in the end, i really love FNC's choice for nicoo, roej and FASHR. and ofc all the best to ALEX ofc, sometimes it just doesnt work out, and you just have to move on.
