Heroic knock Spirit out of IEM Rio to secure semi-final spot

The Danes will face off against either FURIA or Natus Vincere in their next match.

Heroic bagged a 2-0 victory in their IEM Rio Major quarter-final series against Spirit after taking the Russians' map pick Vertigo 16-8 before wrapping up the match on Overpass 16-14. Each member of Heroic pulled their weight and contributed to the victory, but it was the captain Casper "cadiaN" Møller who led by example and finished as his team's top fragger with 40 kills and a 1.24 rating throughout the whole series.

Spirit's campaign at the Rio Major comes to an end in the quarter-finals as they exit the competition in 5-8th place. They had the upper hand early on both maps but their inability to capitalize on their advantage ultimately sent them packing from the Major. Igor "w0nderful" Zhdanov shined on both maps and led his team with 47 kills and a 1.25 rating but in the end his efforts weren't enough to keep Spirit in Rio.

Heroic now await the winner of the last quarter-final between FURIA and NAVI

Spirit drew first blood in the series after they turned an unfavorable 2vs5 situation into an opening pistol round win behind Pavel "s1ren" Ogloblin's quad-kill. Both sides remained neck-and-neck as the scoreline read 3-3 before Heroic won six of the next seven thanks to a series of round-defining plays by cadiaN, René "TeSeS" Madsen, and Rasmus "sjuush" Beck to increase their advantage to 9-4. Spirit constantly opted to attack the A bomb site but were shut down by Heroic's defense time and time again which led to the Danes holding a 10-5 lead at the break.

Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov's crew got the ball rolling on the CT side by taking the first two rounds, narrowing their deficit to three. From that point on, though, Heroic would prove to be too tough an adversary for the Russians as they clinched map point at 15-7 and wrapped up Vertigo 16-8 two rounds later. sjuush was a key factor to his team's success on the offensive as he let his rifle sing and dropped multi-kill after multi-kill with ease.

The Russians scored the opening pistol on Overpass and converted their advantage to a swift 3-0 behind s1ren's flawless start with an 8-0 K-D. Their early success was immediately negated by Heroic who replicated their performance on Vertigo and streaked to an 8-4 advantage on the back of Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard's server-high 14 kills. The CIS squad finally stopped the bleeding in the 13th and were looking poised to claim the following round for themselves, but a magnificent 1vs3 clutch from cadiaN shifted the momentum back to Heroic who entered halftime just six rounds away from the semi-finals.

Spirit came out of the gates swinging and won four straight to kick off the second half which brought Heroic's lead down to just one. Seven rounds later, the Russians would finally catch up to cadiaN's crew and bring the score level at 13 apiece. Even with the game's momentum now behind them, two late pushes into the upper bomb site effectively sealed Spirit's fate as Heroic clinched the series in the final round of regulation with a 16-14 victory.

As expected Heroic played really well totally deserved the win however, the Crowd is probably one of the worst and most toxic I've ever seen.

Furia certainly has got some rounds due to the crowd, but that’s part of the game, lets see how they do against Na’Vi

It's crazy how heroic are one of the more likeable teams left in the tournament. Xddddd
2022-11-11 22:20
They were just a few steps ahead. Kudos to Cadian. His calling was really impressive with Heroic constantly moving on the map, changing up the pace when it's needed and chopper still needs to learn a lot as he got outsmarted today. Maybe next year, sadly the boys didn't live up to my nickname, but it is what it is.

Honestly seeing this team makes me SO FUCKING SAD about the Degster situation. Might be a Cope but I really think if the team had stuck around after Antwerp - this would be their major to lose 100%.

Not spirit's fault, though. Degster wanted to have more freedom as an AWPer and Spirit's system isn't revolved around one player. Everyone is equal. You can't really change your gamestyle because of one player wanting to do his own things. w0nderful played well even though some people may say that his frags were impactless. Chopper's calls were lousy today. There was a round with jabbi solo holding B with like 25 seconds on the clock and Spirit decided to go back to A for some reason despite not having any control towards bathrooms/toilets or whatever it's called. Don't copy Outsiders if you have no clue how to play rounds slowly.

Yeah, with the exception of w0nderful the whole team underperformed this game which sucks as it could have been a extremely close 3 mapper if choppers calls had been on point and our fraggers had stepped up, props to w0nderful for kicking straight ass especially when the whole crowd has been abusing the team for this whole majo. looking forward to paris, it should be a really good event for spirit if we continue on this upward trajectory. Also the A emphasis on vertigo was crazy, always going ramp on t side, made me confused as to why chopper kept calling that, if only we picked ancient since its probably our best map t side, we might have been able to secure and early map win and then clean up on overpass since it was such a close map, the extra mental boost could have turned the tides, oh well. GGWP Herioc all power to them, hoping for them, outsiders or mouz to win major now

It kinda hurts knowing it could've really been Spirit's major. On a good day they can compete against the best teams in the world and seeing teams like FURIA or MOUZ in the semi-finals makes me feel like the major could've been theirs if they beat Heroic. I also don't understand why chopper kept calling the same ramp wrap every round. I've watched every spirit's game on vertigo and they usually do more pressure towards mid/B but this time around they were fully focused on taking ramp control. I mean, A ramp is the most important place on the map hands down but them not trying to do something towards mid was so confusing as whenever I watch them play vertigo they always take care over mid area. I could be wrong, but if I recall correctly they won one clutch during the whole series which was s1ren's 1v2 in the pistol rounds on vertigo. if Patsi, who's responsible for taking control over ramp is having a really tough game then it's basically gg. It seemed like communication was a bit off as well. There was a round on Vertigo with Spirit going B and jabbi sitting on 5 hp alone on site and yet he got two or three kills as Patsi passed him over after getting the kill on TeSeS despite the fact they knew he was there. Jabbi killed Patsi, then rotation came in they walked into cadian's AWP. A lot of factors decided the outcome of the game. Chopper needs to learn from this game as there's a lot of things he needs to work on to become a top notch IGL. Why would you turn into Outsiders mode if you can't play slowly and you're better off picking up the pace? I mean it's okay to execute last-minute, but only if you have a map control. If you don't have a map control over toilets on Overpass and there's 20 seconds on the clock, why would you go A? I don't get it.

Yeah its unfortunate but hopefully its a learning experience, and maybe next time they will just FUCKING PICK ANCIENT I SWEAR TO GOD WHY DONT WE PICK ANCIENT ITS OUR BEST MAP WE ARE SO GOOD ON IT WHY.

It's off the point, but I wonder why they can't play on puggy maps like D2 or Mirage. I remember them being one of the best teams in the world on D2 back in 2021. Obviously different lineup, but still it amazes me how much they've fallen off there. On the other hand they've got like 30% winrate on mirage or something like this. I thought mirage would be one of their best maps knowing w0nderful, patsi, magixx etc have played myriad of faceit premium games on this map. Mir was so good at anchoring B on D2 and playing short on mirage. Maybe that's why.
