FaZe secure semi-final spot in Denmark, Heroic to start playoff run in quarter-finals
The series was not the most significant, as it was only for playoff seeding, but the way in which Finn "karrigan" Andersen’s men persevered late on Ancient to steal the Danes’ map pick 16-14, before dominating Inferno 16-5, has now put FaZe as one of the front-runners to take it all in Copenhagen.
Martin "stavn" Lund kicked off proceedings on Ancient with a 1vs3 clutch on the T-side pistol round that allowed the Danes to go up 5-1 on the attack. Heroic slowed down as the half went on, but still managed to win an impressive seven rounds. The strong first half looked like it would bear fruits for Casper "cadiaN" Møller and his men as they took a 14-11 lead on the defense, but a late onslaught from FaZe flipped the script.
A 2vs4 in the 26th round with a 1vs3 clutch by Robin "ropz" Kool to catalyze the comeback was the perfect example of how the international squad barreled their way through the late game with come-from-behind rounds to win five in a row and clinch the 16-14 victory. Helvijs "broky" Saukants, who already had 21 kills before switching sides, was no doubt the player of the map, as he registered 34 scalps to his name by the thirtieth round.
Heroic crumbled on the CT side of Inferno, downing only ten players while FaZe comfortably put rounds on the board all the way to a 7-0 lead. Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken then downed three in a B-site defense to go 8-1 in what ended up being a dominant 11-4 half. karrigan and company won a second round forcebuy after the half to nail the final grave in Heroic’s coffin, winning out 16-5.
FaZe’s versatile game, from late-game heroics that turned around Ancient on the terrorist side to a dominant display on Inferno, bodes well for the international superteam, who will no doubt be relishing their upturn in form after a painful 0-3 exit at the IEM Rio Major that cast severe doubts about how they would show before the end of the year.
The international superteam are now perched in the semi-finals, which will take place at the Royal Arena, where they will face the victor of the quarter-final between Ninjas in Pyjamas and the second seed in Group B.
