huNter-: "Lately we are lacking confidence since we didn't win for a long time"
The G2 rifler gave some insight into the current mood within the team.
The pain felt by the G2 members after they missed out on qualification for IEM Rio was palpable, with their social media accounts awash with lament and despair. Nikola "NiKo" Kovač said it best: "I've never felt this empty and this much pain."
The BLAST Premier Fall Final is the first chance G2 have had to redeem themselves after their shocking failure in the Europe RMR, and they recovered from an opening 0-2 stumble against Liquid by brushing aside Fluxo 2-0 in today's series.
Fresh from that victory Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač sat down with HLTV to provide some insight into the match, and he also reflected on how G2 have used the time they might have otherwise spent attending the Major in Brazil.
First things first, it must be nice to be in the quarter-finals?
That was our main goal, to be in quarter-finals and to qualify for Abu Dhabi, and that's what we did. Now we are setting up new goals, and yeah it's a great feeling.
It must also have been nice to grab such a convincing win on the first map and build a little bit of confidence, can you talk me through that map?
We were talking a lot about how we should play against those kind of opponents because it's not easy to prepare for them, and of course lately we are lacking confidence since we didn't win for a long time. I am really happy that we started good on Dust2, on Mirage it was not the best, we will need to discuss tonight and see what was bad, what was good, but of course really happy about Dust2.
Were you expecting Mirage to be so competitive, because it was a very close game in the end?
We didn't think anything, we didn't underestimate them after we won Dust2 pretty easy. They played good, we had some really bad rounds honestly on both sides that we needed to win, and yeah that's why it gets close. At the end I am really happy that we close it out, because I didn't want to play these overtimes (smiles).
A lot was said about your performance yesterday, people were saying that maybe you guys were rusty having not played an official in a while. Did you feel rusty?
Maybe a bit at the beginning, but honestly no excuses for us, I don’t like to have excuses. We had time to prepare, we had the whole time we didn't play the Major, comparing to the other teams we are ahead when we talk about preparation. No excuses, we were just not that good yesterday, Liquid was better and they played good honestly, nothing to say.
Just to speak a little bit about the Major, you guys made it very clear how you felt after the RMR, but what was it like sitting at home watching the Major? How did it feel?
Of course it was really really hard to watch the Major from home, especially the first couple games of the group stage because it was the first Major with this kind of fans in the group stage. It was not easy for us to sit and watch because we all want to play and experience the Brazil Major, but yeah this is how it is at the beginning, it was tough. After we got used to it, we watched games, and prepared for this event. That's it.
What have you worked on specifically? Like you say, you have had time to prepare due to not being at the Major.
Specifically we worked on communication and staying alive whatever is happening in a game, because that was our main issue in the RMR and before that, in the games that we lost. So just communication and staying alive whatever is happening in the game.
What's the confidence like within the team at the moment, and what's the atmosphere like?
The atmosphere is always amazing honestly, the confidence of course is not the best yet but we need two or three more wins, against good opponents, and I think confidence will be back. I have really great teammates, good human beings, good players, and nothing to say honestly.
Last question: were there any goals or aims for this tournament? Were you saying "we want to finish top-two, top-four," anything like that?
I don't like to set any goals honestly for myself, I like to go game by game, day by day. Obviously one of our goals as a team was to qualify for Abu Dhabi and to pass the group stage, and we did that today. No time to celebrate, the next game is tomorrow against Heroic and we need to prepare.
