floppy: "We're definitely seeing the progress for future events"

Ricky "floppy" Kemery spoke to HLTV.org after their match against Permitta, which puts Complexity one win away from the IEM Katowice group stage.

Complexity entered IEM Katowice after an unsuccessful BLAST Premier Spring Groups campaign, where they lost the deciding series against Natus Vincere despite being 14-8 up on the final map. Keen to make amends for their failure, they began IEM Katowice with a match against BIG. The North Americans got bested on Anubis in a close game, which condemned them to the lower bracket.

Complexity will play ENCE for a spot in groups

Their lower-bracket opponents were Permitta, who ended up being no match for Complexity. The North Americans ran rampant against the Poles in a quick 2-0, with a win against ENCE all that now stands between them and a spot at the main event.

Ahead of the all-deciding match, floppy spoke to HLTV.org about Complexity's season so far and their expectations for Friday's clash with ENCE.

The American also touched on the situation that happened early in the match against BIG, in a round where he dropped out of the game and which did not end up being replayed, and how it affected the proceedings.

I wanted to go back to BLAST, where you had that heartbreaking loss to NAVI at the end, barely missing out on the Finals after being up 14-8 on the last map. How do you reflect on that? That must be a tough loss to recover from.

Yeah, it was definitely rough for us as a team, but it's not the first time it happened considering the RMR, so I kinda got flashbacks to that considering it was the third map of Overpass again. Honestly, it sucks, but it is what it is.

Considering as you say this isn't the first time, do you sense there is a pressure issue there in terms of how the team is able to deal with that?

Not for me, personally. I think NAVI are just experienced enough to adapt to what we were doing. It's obviously a choke, we're up 14-8, so I think it was a combination of them adapting and us having a bit of nerves. I wasn't really feeling it that game, personally.

How much did you see that as a positive sign going into Katowice, being able to take a team like that to such a close score and being in a position to beat them?

We finally won Inferno, thank god. We were so sick of losing on Inferno, so we put in a lot of work to get better at it, and to beat a team like NAVI on it is obviously really good. We're definitely seeing the progress for future events as well.

Tell me about Katowice and how things have gone for you so far. You started off with that close, almost-comeback against BIG, now a convincing win against Permitta. How are you feeling about your performances up to now?

I think the BIG game could have been a little bit different considering what happened in the first half. We had to take a tech pause and it couldn't happen, so it was pretty much like a 3v5 at the start of the round, which is a really big turnaround for us. We've been working on our CT side after that as well, we've learned a lot from the BIG game, so we're just going to watch this Permitta game and see what we can do better for tomorrow.

Is that something that affects you mentally inside the game when an issue happens that isn't supposed to?

Obviously it sucks, but it's out of my control, it's out of anyone's control, it's not really something to get upset about. I mean, I can't do anything about it, so it's like, whatever, it is what it is. Obviously it sucks.

ENCE is going to be the matchup for a spot in groups. It's a team you've beaten before in the run you had at EPL S16, how confident are you that you can repeat it here?

We're gonna try our best to get a quick 2-0 going. We wanna qualify for the main event in Katowice. We practiced them in scrims before and we've had good results against them - obviously it doesn't really matter too much, but I think we're gonna have a good game.

What is the goal for this event? How important is it to get a good result here after you just missed out on the BLAST Finals?

It's pretty important, especially after that BLAST choke, I'll say. We wanna make the main event for sure, that's pretty much one of our main goals for tomorrow, just beat ENCE and move forward from there.

Ffs man, you just beat a team of unknowns. If col don't get stomped by everyone else, then we'll talk
2023-02-03 00:40
Worth remembering when people say "tier 2 EU" would beat teams like Col that this is what actually happens when Col plays tier 2 EU teams. The reality of the world of CS right now is it's just really hard to break into the top 10-15. I'm glad Col are making progress. I can see it in their play and Grim in particular is a guy to watch. He absolutely smashes the eye test.

exactly this. i think its already admirable how much time these guys spent in EU last year, but lets not forget the fact that the competition has been fiercer than ever. Its hard to reach top 15 but there are so many new lineups in the top 30 that can cause a surprise and beat a top team. Thats just todays reality. CoL has done an excellent job in forming this lineup with an American core, hopefully they can snatch a title this year.

I think a title is being enthusiastic. But a top 8 or maybe even top 4 finish? Some real development out of a rifler not named grim (floppy or fang?). Those would be signs that this team is actually going in the right direction. My only point is I see people acting like teams outside the top 30 would crush col everytime they play and the reality is obviously very far from that.
2023-02-03 01:14
Title?? Lmao They made playoffs once which was 9-12 finish
2023-02-03 11:42
Permitta is ranked #56. How do u rate them as "tier 2 EU"? They are barely T3.
2023-02-03 01:17
To clarify, I dont hate or flame ur sentiment or coL for that matter, but for me, T2 are teams like BNE, Sprout, EG, SAW, GamerLegion and coL aswell and that already puts like 15ish teams in T1 cause its so close between teams like ENCE, astralis, BIG or NiP for example who are more towards the end of t1 right now, at least. If I needed to rank these T2 teams, Id even put coL pretty much on top there, but its still T2 and Permitta is nowhere close to that level. Id love to see more success for coL and more consistancy. I sympathize with this org since the good old fRoD, Storm & Warden days. 2 more strong NA teams behind Liquid would be beneficial for everyone.

I mean I've seen them beat BNE in the last couple months. Don't think they've played any of the others but I could be wrong. Point is and I think it stands there's no world where Col is getting blown out by tier 2/3 EU teams. I pretty much agree with your thoughts otherwise. Particularly that we just need strong NA representation. It'd probably help a lot if you could combine the best parts of col/eg into one squad.

They did beat BNE and fnatic in elisa espoo, and yea a loss to saw it was a long tech pause I believe other wise COL was playing great, after that ig they just never went into the, also seeing how close sprout vs EG went it's safe to say COL can beat sprout, I think the problem with COL is they are close to break in tier 1, however with great tier 1 comes great choke, remember how liquid and G2 were called the choke kings, I think COL is also going through that phase, as a COL fan I think waiting will be worth the while or maybe just like G2 and liquid we are just one roster change away from doing it let's see

2023-02-03 11:17
not trying to hate, but Permitta is worse than academy teams, tier 2 would mean to beat big, sprout, BNE, mouz, outsiders (yes, even tho i am fan of outsiders, but they are tier 2 now), ence and teams like that, not winning against 5 level 10 polish players
2023-02-03 07:59
1 reply
mouz is definitely T1 by their latest results as 3/4 in Major, 5-8 in Pro League and 5/6 in Cologne. Unfortunately they are no BLAST partner and havent played yet since the major, but that shoudnt downgrade them from their last performance. And Outsiders are T1 aswell. Cant put mouz and major winner outsiders on the same level as BNE or sprout.

He seemed pretty arrogant in the interview before the game against BIG, was not likeable at all. Also blaming the loss on a tech issue in one round, come on. It was a clear loss, and BIG won against FURIA after that. Think they need to adjust their expectations a bit, just because you had one close 1-2 vs (a weak) NAVI doesn't mean your tier1 all of the sudden.
2023-02-03 08:58
'Progress' can be anything, right? Maybe their comms are better now. Maybe they've figured out roles now. Maybe it's about activating Grim. Maybe it's about minor things the players and coach noticed about their gameplay that they improved upon. Floppy didn't say he's seeing the progress because of the win against Permitta, but rather because pushing NAVI to their limits. That IS progress. Y'all haters gotta stop hating on NA and get a fucking hobby.

2023-02-03 10:08
Col is absolutely good enough to 2-0 ence. They are far better than their world ranking would suggest. They really don’t look lost at all when they are playing top teams. For the most part they look comfortable at events like this, they have lost a lot of close ones. JT is better than people give him credit for. Hallzerk you just have to hope he’s having a good impactful day with the awp. Grim is a machine. He’s almost so good that hallzerk doesn’t have to get many awp kills. Floppy and fang are pretty solid players as well. I think a top tier awper is really the only missing piece here but they still make it work
