SunPayus named IEM Dallas MVP

The Spanish AWPer claims the first Most Valuable Player medal in his career after leading ENCE to the IEM Dallas title.

Alvaro "SunPayus" Garcia has been named the HLTV x 1xBet MVP of IEM Dallas moments after his team beat MOUZ in a one-sided grand final affair and secured the $100,000 first-place prize.

The Spaniard, who has now become the first-ever player from his country to earn an HLTV MVP, was an ever-present force throughout ENCE's run to this core's first Big Event title, which also featured victories over FaZe on two occasions, Astralis, and Complexity.

SunPayus is the first Spaniard to claim an HLTV MVP

A true difference-maker for the winning side, SunPayus recorded 1.15+ ratings in every single one of their map wins, put up key performances in narrow affairs against Astralis and FaZe, and was ENCE's highest-rated player in all but one of their five matches.

SunPayus made it to several event leaderboards with a 1.27 overall rating in 11 maps (#2), 0.79 kills per round (#5), 0.54 deaths per round (#3), 0.46 AWP kills per round (#1), and 1.30 impact rating (#4).

His biggest rival to the award was his grand final opponent David "frozen" Čerňanský, who boasted a similarly impressive resumé leading up to the grand final and went on to play up to par with those standards in the title decider, which is sure to earn him the top Exceptionally Valuable Player nod.

You need to be at least Top 4 minimum to be in contention for the MVP award and Top 2 to even stand a relative chance of obtaining it. He and Astralis finished Top 8 at 5th/6th. He'll get an EVP for sure, though.

Question for example, What if a player got a 2.0 rating but finished 4th? You think he would get it?

It depends... The likelihood of a player from the semis getting an MVP over the winning team who arguably played more maps and has a wider rating divergence of maps played is next to impossible but it is "technically" possible depending on some insane things happening... Hypothetically speaking, all 10 players in the grand-finals would have to be levelled at 1.02 rating each, with overall tournament numbers being lower than an average of 1.2/1.15, and the assumed player in question in the semis would have to post numbers throughout like over a 2.50 rating, something silly like that. Likely to never happen but technically it could, according to Striker anyway.

Yeah, before the Tgwr1ls statement, it was just assumed to be general knowledge or accepted fact that only grand-finalists were in contention for the MVP. For the longest time, it was believed to just be the truth and that is not the case for Majors, to my knowledge.

Post #41. He'll get an EVP, he wouldn't have actually been able to secure an MVP because he wasn't in contention for it.

It was about the actual MVP, though. Even if Device still managed a Top 4 placing, it's still unlikely he would have gotten it over the grand-finalists or even the winner.

Well he was the most MVP player for one 2 reasons in particular, 1. He clutched and entryed more than everyone else and he also just in general carryed his team to playoff. More than what sunpayus can boast about, because ences win was complete team effort

I'm not contesting that, I'm contesting that SunPayas also deserved the MVP. As good as Device's numbers were, it's still arguable if he would've won over the winner even theoretically achieving Top 4 for contention. If Device isn't in contention for the award, then all of what you stated is irrelevant but it is obviously a shame because I agree he and his performances definitely deserved it also, which is why he'll get an EVP for his efforts. It wouldn't have been in vain.

If HLTV are still doing end of the year rankings like every other year, then they definitely will have EVP's, they might just release them at the end of the year like they did in 2020.

This HLTV quietly saying that Sunpayus won the MVP because he won the tournament.

That's not really news, though. Obviously winning helps towards getting the award, Frozen's statistics would've needed to be far better than SunPayas' to still lose and get the MVP, as opposed to being just on par or even slightly ahead, where losing/winning wouldn't have mattered anyway.
2023-06-04 23:28

But HLTV still refuses to say this is a main point of contention tough. They entertain that "everything is possible"

I don't think it's refusal to acknowledgement, it's just a moot point at the best of times because rarely is that ever relevant unless the statistics factors are vastly different, like in the case of s1mple in 2018 against Astralis or when ZywOo won a Cologne MVP without even winning Cologne. The Frozen and Sunpayas MVP award was always going to go to whichever team won it, they had practically similar statistics even though both players play different roles.
2023-06-04 23:33
yes, but still, sunpayus had higher rating in the finals, higher rating in general, a lot more impact, more kpr, the only thing frozen had better was his ADR, but that is the usual when comparing an AWPer to a rifler
2023-06-05 09:30
