Vitality knock out Cloud9 to secure playoffs in Washington

The Russian squad's tournament campaign ends before playoffs for the second time in a row, with a tragic map point loss adding insult to injury.

Vitality secured a quarter-final spot at BLAST Premier Spring Final 2023 after defeating Cloud9 2-0 in Group A's lower bracket. The reigning Major champions started off the event cold against Imperial, but managed to bounce back against Konstantin "groove" Pikiner's men to clinch a spot in the knockout stage. The Russian squad was looking good to at least force the decider map, but two team kills at map point allowed Vitality to close it out in two.

This latest defeat means Cloud9's spring campaign is officially over. The Russian quintet enters the off-season after a disappointing three months, in which they failed to qualify for the last CS:GO Major and to take any silverware from IEM Rio, IEM Dallas, and their latest adventure in Washington.

Vitality defeated Cloud9 after two close maps

The series began on Cloud9's pick of Overpass, and the Russians initially cruised on the offense as Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov and Timur "buster" Tulepov powered their team to a 6-0 start. Vitality struggled to defend the B bombsite in the early rounds and their opponents took full advantage of the situation, constantly attacking the lower site. The European mix took some time to get going, but eventually Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and company stabilized their CT side, taking six rounds on the bounce to bring the scoreline even. Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov and buster then combined to bring a 2 vs. 4 situation home and claim a narrow 8-7 lead going into the break.

Vitality started off the second half in much better form with ZywOo now fully operational after a relatively slow start. The European combine fought their way through the second pistol round before continuing their aggression through their T side. Cloud9 failed to keep up with Vitality's offense and only claimed five CT rounds before conceding their pick 13-16.

Anubis' first half was also closely fought as Vitality cruised early on their T side to claim a 4-0 lead on their map pick. The Europeans were poised to blast through the remaining rounds, but consecutive aces from sh1ro and Ax1Le halted their offense on the spot and allowed Cloud9 to claw back at the scoreline. The rifler recorded a 1.59 rating while his team came back to claim an 8-7 advantage before halftime.

Cloud9 quickly extended their lead after switching sides and were on the brink of a decider on Vertigo, but a couple of failed attacks on the B site allowed Vitality back into the game. Adding insult to injury, round 29 started off with two catastrophic team-kills for the Russians and the Europeans were more than happy to run with it and force overtime before closing the map 19-17 and the series 2-0.

I mean he had most of this roster for 4 years

That's extremely disingenuous. Nafany is a huge fraud. Biggest fraud igl I've ever seen in tier 1 , not in the sense that he's the worst. Although maybe. Certainly up there. But because somehow some people still don't get he's legit a terrible caller. And that sh1ro literally coaches nafany how to call. Wether that's a good or bad sign on sh1ro is up to you. But it's a terrible sign on nafany for sure. With all this said. None of that changes the fact that he didn't have this roster for 4 years , he had a similar roster without the major winning also somehow debatable number 2 player on the team at times in the beginning and for a while after that with hobbit. But even disregarding that. Yeah he has a team of 4 rookies , whoops 5 including himself. Was he expected to lead a consistent top 5 team because they've been together so Long? No, it's only because sh1ro and ax1le developed so well, PLUS they should have loads of chemistry yes. But lf it was just 4 decent tier 2.5 players for 2 of those years. Then that's very disingenuous to count those 2 years into the equation. Spirit, a team at the time that was known for having one of the longest cores of all time. Eventually finally starting doing a bit well. Do we say chopper was a failure for not having that core be a consisten top 15 team all those years just because THEN his players developed enough to perform well at tier 1? Please for the love of christ never make me defend this fraud again

Doesn't really matter if others review that particular round. It doesn't prove anything.

I never stated that, I just said that the round doesn't prove anything. Match-fixing is always treated as a possibility, nothing more, nothing less. Remember that.

Cloud9 needs to kick everyone apart from sh1ro and ax1le. How do you lose to a low morale G2 and and a vitality team that's already on a break and play this event on autopilot...

They each had maybe 2 maps in their entire life where they actually stepped up and closed it out in a very important match. Great players but by far the least impactful star players I've ever seen in CS history. Team built around these two will never achieve anything.

even if they step up they still lose
2023-06-08 20:33
for the CIS region, they doesn't have a good lurker since b1t in locked in Na'Vi, and hobbit isn't bad for most of the times, cloud9 should only keep ax1le, sh1ro and hobbit, get a better igl and better anchor, could consider Jerry and KaiR0N-, or res3lt
2023-06-13 04:53
nice throw from cloud9 XD
2023-06-08 19:06
now that I've watched the clip, holy moly that literally cost them the whole series. Also, get sh1ro new teammates man. Or have him go international since that's now CS's future in the pro scene since all countrymen rosters have now proven to be massive anchors in this current era for new and rising talent.

Nice Spinx need to fucking step up, otherwise they won't win the tournament. Kinda expected drop off from dupreeh and apex, it was obvious to me that they won't keep the recent performance.

Vita only play this event because they have to and it's obvious they don't care. Highly unlikey they don't win this one.

You're absolutely right. A tier 1 team that doesn't try to win at a tournament , unless they're expirementing. NEEDS to be fired immediately. They don't exist. At worst they may give up mid match. HOWEVER. Wanting something so bad you literally dedicate all of your possible time to spend on it, literally as much as possible without causing a negative health balance causing you to perform worse. And wanting something so bad you'll only put in 5-10 hours a day , especially because you're the world number 1 and major champions and on a map winning streak and super confident and facing the biggest underdog in their bracket and the second biggest period. However I'm only explaining this loss , if they continue to lose, which they haven't. Then thst would've been actually concerning
2023-06-09 01:47
Nah, they might not be highly motivated rn but none of these teams wanna get smashed, no matter what. They're still gonna try to win.
2023-06-08 20:09
Vitality really didn't want to win that but C9 insisted on giving them the win.

ax1le to navi (-npl) Time for C9 to rebuild if they can keep hold of shiro and ax1le. If they have started to learn English I would be very worried as a c9/gambit fan. I wonder if they'll be looking at S1ren and Patsi (rumoured to be benched by Spirit soon)

Homie. You seriously think they would be scraping the bottom of the Ukrainian barrel of players if they were open to a Russian player? Navi will continue to rot unless some miracle happens and a Ukrainian star arrives, or they change their ways. Which even if they wanted to , they can't for pr reasons considering they've already taken stances, with for example whiping Edward and Starix from their hall of fame. But even if they didn't take stances idk if they could considering the backlash

ax1le's english can't to be said good, but it's enough for ingame comms sh1ro......the interview with him in english he cant understand a word, he can't even say "I don't speak English."in english

C9 deserves to be trash after what they done to interz. Also, the WOO the best in the game showing again why he is the GOAT

They didn't DO anything to interz. Cringe logic. No one is owed a position on a team. This isn't a backstabbing or snaking like a Tarik or apex move. This is simply a stagnating team sadly ignorantly attempting a solution. Nafany is the caller yes. But sh1ro tells him how to call, he practically coaches nafany. He says this in interviews extremely frequently this year. And a bit In the past. Issue here is that sh1ro must've not recognized that the calling was the issue. Because sh1ro has a large voice in the calling of the team. Im sure he has good ideas outside the game and its just nafanys poor execution. However sh1ro is a huge voice in the team. Arguably the biggest. Actually I don't think Arguably. He just is. The biggest voice in the team is directly coaching the igl how to call. It makes sense that they took so long to blame the calling. They didn't do anything out of spite to interz in anyway, also I'd imagine they're still close.
