HooXi is again a go-to despite +$10K price adjustment in EPL Group D fantasy

The absolute majority of players are still going for Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen despite our efforts to create more space for other choices.

HooXi is present in nearly 70% of Fantasy teams for Group D

Format

- You can create your teams on the Fantasy page here.

- 8 teams in double elimination BO3 bracket with Last Chance stage bracket.

- Teams that reach the UB final get padding points for 3 rounds: LB Semi-finals, 6-7th place decider, and 4th place decider.

- The winner of the LB final gets padding points for 2 rounds: 6-7th place decider and 4th place decider.

Teams

Things to note

- The format heavily favors teams that are expected to reach the UB final and get triple padding points. But padding can also be negative if a player had poor performances in preceding matches, although it can be partially offset by +6 points for each round.

- It has been reported that Robert "Patsi" Isyanov might not make it to Malta in time for EPL, with Damian "daps" Steele being a potential replacement. Consider that when picking any of Liquid players, and, likewise, the impact it could have on the performance of their bracket opponents.

Player prices

- HooXi is the players’ favorite once again with a presence in nearly 70% of the teams. This is obviously a result of an attractive $175K price tag, but the Dane’s price according to our formula should, in fact, have been $165K; only manual adjustment brought it up higher. It doesn’t mean that HooXi is a bad pick (he could be!), but he was made worse, price-wise, relative to other bronze players. Please consider that when making your team.

- Another significant price adjustment on G2 is Nikola "NiKo" Kovač. The Bosnian’s run of form resulted in him having a $248K price which we manually brought down to a more affordable $232K.

Prizes

- The users can count on both Season points and skin prizes as follows.

1. Hydra Gloves | Mangrove (Field-Tested)
2. AWP | Hyper Beast (Field-Tested)
3. AK-47 | Asiimov (Field-Tested)

CCT 2023 Online Finals 3

Format

- You can create your teams on the Fantasy page here.
- 16-team double-elimination bracket.
- All matches are BO3.

Teams

Things to note

- In a double-elimination bracket of this size, each match won in the upper bracket starting with quarter-finals equals to one round of padding. Picking the team to have such run is not easy, but that’s your best shot to get a top placement and fight for the prizes.

Player prices

- Ihor "w0nderful" Zhdanov's price was lowered as he was initially calculated at $259K due to his staggering performances. Now he goes for $219K, but whether Sprout will be competitive enough to allow the Ukrainian to score points or not is up to you to predict.

Prizes

- Players can expect skin prizes for the top three as follows:

1. Driver Gloves | Racing Green (Field-Tested)
2. AK-47 | Asiimov (Field-Tested)
3. M4A1-S | Mecha Industries (Field-Tested)

Hooxi sucks as a pick, he gives you tons of negative points because he always performs badly. Unless you could get a good price on a mega star to make up for the point loss its not worth it at all. He just gets picked because he costs so little and people think he'll get points for winning. He is so bad that you'll get many negative points despite G2 winning a match.

I did consider that. But usually life forms don't last and also m0nesy will steal more than his share of the kills against worse opponents

He's not playing any better or anything, we just made him more expensive because we want you to pick someone else.

Users pick HooXi not only because he's cheap, but also because of his team's ranking relative to other teams. The formula takes into account the ranking, but not well enough. And we have plenty of such examples. Would it be more fun to play the game as it is now or to have 90% with, for example, 3 exact players just because their prices are too good to miss? So the variety of choice shrinks to 2 players? Certainly not, therefore we pull in the other direction.

NiKo would have been 248? I knew he was having a good run of form but I didn't realise he was doing that well! Anyway, Hooxi in my team stays

I feel like you guys manually adjusting players like that just makes fantasy feel wrong. What players are given free adjustment each event and by how much break their value per rating evaluation with other players. For some it may make sense like chinese or australian regions where they farm stats, but realistically there could be a blanket formula multiplier for those regions. If niko is worth 300k then oh well that is how much he is worth and lowing him just so that you can see a popular name on the list of most drafted players is whack.

I understand what you're saying, and we're planning on making a formula that would make it a more universal approach with proper accounting for ranking. The thing we're doing with increasing the prices of the likes of HooXi and lowering the prices for the likes of NiKo is bringing both closer to the average simultaneously, and, in the end, it evens out and allows for bigger variety of strategies. And you still can't really see NiKo among the most drafted, only 18% went for him (and the team is also made of 5 other players) so he's now top 9 most drafted. But we wouldn't want the big names to miss out just because they're too expensive, this would mean we likely did something wrong.

Do you scale prices down or balancing them against each other (I don't know what the correct term) like with teams ranking where 1000 points is maximum and other teams are adjusted accordingly? What I mean is there are 8 teams with 5 players and with average per player $200k, the total for all players will be $8,000,000.

I'm afraid I'm not authorized to respond to this question since it goes into detail about how the system works. But please feel free to ask anything else about fantasy if you will have any other questions!
2023-09-18 10:51
Appreciate the response, I get wanting to not make players that are big names all but impossible to draft, but that sounds like more of an issue with upper/lower bounds needing some tuning. Gambling on a star player putting in 250k worth of points shouldnt be a terrible option, just a risky one. But this stuff takes a lot of data and fine tuning. I imagine that on the back end there is some kind of ideal cost to points average (assuming each player plays exactly at their expected cost's level) and it needs some level of normalizing done to keep things from too high/low extremes. Here's hoping you guys can work out a way to normalize for ranking and region come the next major. Ive enjoyed fantasy since it came out, and ideally would like it to keep improving. +1
