DH Summer 2011: Top Players

DreamHack Summer 2011 ended over two weeks ago, but better late than never we bring you a report about the tournament's top players. The organizers already announced the MVP, Martin "trace" Heldt, but nevertheless we will continue our tradition and allow you to have a say in the matter, as well as in picking the All-Star lineup.

The international tournament at DreamHack Summer 2011, dubbed DreamHack MSI Championship, was the fourth major event in 2011 and it brought us a fourth different winner. After fnatic, Natus Vincere and Frag eXecutors, it was SK Gaming that became champions by beating mTw in the final, and this time the winner received a €6,715 prize.

60 players from 12 teams played 44 matches in this tournament and, as always, some players had to stand out. We will now check out who they were and what separated them from the rest, and in the end you will be able to vote for the Most Valuable Player and the All-Star lineup of the tournament in your opinion.

Best rated players

13) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Sweden Patrik 'f0rest' Lindberg Sweden SK Gaming
0.70 0.64 1.05

2 x MotM, Highest rating: 2.00 vs Brazil playArt (Group stage, inferno)

The day before DreamHack MSI Championship started, Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg displayed amazing performances while leading SK Gaming to IOL FINAL4 S3 title, including one of the best matches of his career (43-17 in a 15:15 match versus fnatic).

He didn't continue in the same manner in the international tournament though, finishing only as the team's 4th best rated player with a slightly-above-average 1.05 rating. However, he did play a crucial role in some matches, which made him stand out despite the inconsistency.

His best match was in the group stage against playArt when he topped the scoreboard (21-6, 2.00 rating), but his most important contribution came later on in a big clash against Natus Vincere.

During the semi-final encounter, where SK Gaming took the Ukrainian giants out of contention for the title, Lindberg was his team's best rated in the first and the third map, both of which they won. Firstly on de_nuke, he had a 24-8 score during what only looked like an easy 16:3 win, and one map later, he led SK to a comeback win of 16:13 on de_inferno, recording team's best 25-17 score.

SK Gaming then went on to win the tournament and Lindberg also ended up as the best rated player during pistol-rounds among all playoff participants (1.52 rating), which certainly helped the team's cause.

12) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Sweden Harley 'dsn' Örwall Sweden fnatic
0.72 0.67 1.06

1 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.91 vs Spain x6tence (Group stage, tuscan)

Fnatic didn't have a very successful weekend at DreamHack as they ended up empty handed in all 3 tournaments they participated in. However, they still reached the playoffs and a respectable 5-6th position in the MSI Championship.

Harley "dsn" Örwall has been their best rated player overall in this year's majors before this tournament and he remained after it as well. Without excelling much, he was their only player who recorded more kills than deaths and the team-highest 1.17 rating in the group stage made him stand out. His impressive performance in a 16:9 win against x6tence (29-11 score, 1.91 rating) helped secure fnatic's place in the playoffs, as it was their last and deciding match in the group.

11) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Denmark Danny 'zonic' Sørensen Denmark mTw
0.71 0.62 1.06

2 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.60 vs Sweden ESC (Semi-final, nuke)

Danish squad mTw came to the tournament to defend the title they won at DreamHack Summer 2010, but they ended up with another "almost there" campaign and have now surpassed a one year period without an international victory.

In recent tournaments Danny "zonic" Sørensen didn't make as much impact as last year, and his start to this event suggested the same, as he was mTw's worst rated during the group stage. But, during the second day of the tournament – in the playoffs, he stepped up significantly and helped them reach 2nd place.

He recorded a 1.13 playoff-rating, 6th best of all players, mostly thanks to very consistent play as he had a rating above 1.00 in 7 of his 8 playoff maps. In the deciding map and very close 16:13 win against Moscow Five, he had a highlight-worthy pistol-round. But his biggest contribution was in the 16:8 decider map win against ESC Gaming in the semi-final, when he put up his best score of 26-12 (1.60 rating).

10) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Norway Karl-William 'kalle' Haraldsen Sweden ESC Gaming
0.74 0.70 1.08

3 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.90 vs Denmark mTw (Semi-final, train)

When at Xperia PLAY 2011 Karl-William "kalle" Haraldsen ended up as the top rated player and the revelation of the tournament, many called it a one-time thing and expressed their doubts in his ability to repeat performances on that level.

But here he is again as his team's best, leading ESC Gaming to the playoffs and eventuallly 4th place, even though not as influential as last time with a 1.08 rating (he had 1.40 at Xperia). The team's highlight was taking first place in their group in front of Natus Vincere and mTw, and during that stage, Haraldsen was their best rated player (1.18 rating).

ESC went on to lose both matches in the playoffs, but Haraldsen put up a solid fight there as well, especially in the semi-final against mTw (1.15 rating, 1.90 in team's 16:9 win in the 2nd map).

9) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Sweden Johan 'face' Klasson Sweden SK Gaming
0.74 0.63 1.10

0 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.72 vs Ukraine Na´Vi (Semi-final, nuke)

SK Gaming's Johan "face" Klasson, often called their backup player, was already nominated for All-Star lineups on two occasions this year for his performances in IEM5 WC and Xperia PLAY.

Now at DreamHack he once again showed us a great overall performance without standing out very often, but also never disappointing. He was the team's 3rd best rated, same as in Xperia, and he also same as then wasn't top rated in any of the maps, but has instead shown consistent good performances. However, despite not being top rated in any of the 3 maps, he did have the best overall rating in the semi-final match-up against Natus Vincere, 1.22.

8) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Russia Mihail 'Dosia' Stolyarov Russia Moscow Five
0.80 0.66 1.12

1 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.60 vs Spain x6tence (Group stage, inferno)

Mihail "Dosia" Stolyarov has definitely returned among the big names, as after poor form in major competitions at the start of the year, he stringed together two great performances - at Xperia PLAY and now at DreamHack Summer. That also reflected on the Russian team's results, as they reached the playoffs on both occasions.

He didn't stand out in any of the matches in particular, except maybe in the surprise win over fnatic when he had a 21-11 score, but he didn't play badly in any either. Overall, he was one of the best fraggers of the tournament with 0.80 kills per round and also one of the best clutchers, having won 6 rounds in 1vsX situations.

7) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Ukraine Danylo 'Zeus' Teslenko Ukraine Na´Vi
0.78 0.60 1.13

3 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.73 vs Sweden fnatic (Quarter-final, train)

Danylo "Zeus" Teslenko had a very good performance in his previous major tournament, IEM5 World Championship, when his team won their only title so far this year. After that, Natus Vincere skipped Xperia PLAY due to Teslenko becoming a father, but now they returned at DreamHack Summer where he continued with even better individual form.

Third best in his team, Teslenko has, despite the burden of in-game leadership, recorded a very good 1.13 rating (1.15 in the playoffs) and he was top rated in 3 maps. His best performance was in the quarter-final win against fnatic, in which he was shared-best with an excellent 1.51 rating (49-27 in 2 maps).

6) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Ukraine Yegor 'markeloff' Markelov Ukraine Na´Vi
0.78 0.56 1.19

2 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.85 vs Denmark mTw (Group stage, mirage)

Second best rated in Na´Vi was Yegor "markeloff" Markelov, having another good and steady performance, just as we are used to.

He had a rating above 1.00 in 9 of 12 maps, while his best match was against mTw in the group stage on de_mirage, when he had a 27-10 score (1.85 rating). He played very well in other group stage matches too, having an impressive 1.37 rating on the first day (3rd best). In the playoffs he was less influential, but still solid with a 1.07 rating.

He was also excellent in his main task, AWPing, as he recorded the most kills with the big green (90) and had the 2nd best awpKPR (0.31). He particularly stood out with it in the match versus mTw (19 kills) and even more in the 3rd place decider against ESC Gaming when he managed to have an unbelievable 31 awp kills during the 19:16 first map win.

Additionally, per usual, he was the hardest to kill of all players, surviving 44% of the rounds he played (0.56 DPR).

5) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Sweden Marcus 'Delpan' Larsson Sweden SK Gaming
0.78 0.60 1.19

2 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.89 vs Brazil playArt (Group stage, inferno)

A few weeks ago, SK Gaming made a risky move when they snatched Marcus "Delpan" Larsson from fnatic without buying out his contract, and it might have legal consequences for them in the future. But in short term, it paid off immediately as they won their first tournament with him after suffering through almost 10 months of title-drought. Additionally, after this title, Larsson is the only player this year who has won two majors - IEM5 European Finals with fnatic and now DreamHack Summer 2011 with SK.

And he wasn't just a lucky charm for the Swedish giants, but his performance had a big influence on their success. After a somewhat poor start in his first two matches, he went on to record ratings above 1.00 until the end of the tournament, total 8 in a row. He didn't excel too often, but his performance in the final against mTw was deemed MVP worthy. He had a 1.31 rating in the two maps, and a total of 32 awp kills (13 on de_inferno, 19 on de_train). He was also very good in the semi-final against Na´Vi having a 1.11 rating in 3 maps, which put together made him the 4th best rated in the playoffs overall (1.20 playoff-rating).

In the rest of his matches, Larsson also completely fulfilled his role with a great AWP showing, as he ended up the best AWPer of the tournament with awpKPR of 0.34 (89 total kills).

4) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Sweden Christopher 'GeT_RiGhT' Alesund Sweden SK Gaming
0.84 0.63 1.23

1 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.50 vs Denmark mTw (Final, inferno)

The best rated player from the winning team was unsurprisingly Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund. He was already nominated for MVP once this year, at IEM5 World Championship, and he displayed a very similar performance this time, now even with a better team placing.

He was the most consistent performer at DreamHack Summer, never failing his team and having 9 of 10 map performance ratings above 1.00. His form culminated in the final when he was top rated in the clash against mTw with a 1.44 rating in the two maps, and he was overall 2nd best rated in the playoffs (1.30).

3) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Russia Roman 'ROMJkE' Makarov Russia Moscow Five
0.81 0.64 1.23

2 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.96 vs Spain x6tence (Group stage, inferno)

The revelation of this tournament was the performance of Moscow Five's Roman "ROMJkE" Makarov, who led the Russian team to a 5-6th place finish. Even though Makarov has years of experience behind him, he managed to surpass all previous displays and have what was probably the best performance of his career so far.

He ended up by far best rated in his team with 1.23, which was 15% above team's average (only 2 players carried their team more in that regard), and that was also his best rating in major international competitions so far that we have on record.

Moscow Five lost their only playoff match in the quarter-final, and even though Makarov didn't disappoint there against mTw, his best performances were in the group stage. With a 1.41 rating (2nd best of all players), he helped them secure 2nd place in Group B, just behind SK Gaming. He played well in every match, particularly against x6tence (23-7, 1.96 rating in 16:4 win) and TCM (28-16 score, 1.81 rating, 62% above team in 16:9 win). He also recorded a highlight-worthy ace in a 15:15 match against playArt.

2) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Denmark Martin 'trace' Heldt Denmark mTw
0.84 0.62 1.27

4 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.75 vs Sweden ESC (Semi-final, inferno)

Martin "trace" Heldt was a part of all three All-star lineups and nominated for MVP in each major competition so far this year. However, he never did win an MVP award in his career, until now when the organizers of DreamHack Summer 2011 gave him one for his performance in this tournament.

Even though his team didn't finish in 1st place, Heldt did indeed display everything that is expected from an MVP.  He was the player who carried his team the most with rating 23% above team average (1.27 compared to team's 1.03) and was top rated on 4 occasions.

As he led mTw to the final, Heldt was the best rated player in playoffs, with an impressive 1.33 playoff-rating. He especially stood out in the quarter-final match against Moscow Five when he top fragged in all 3 maps and ended up with 1.51 rating overall (40% above team). He was similarly influential in the semi-final against ESC (1.31 rating overall, best in the match) and in the final despite the loss (1.10, best in mTw).

He also excelled as an entry killer, which is no surprise as he was the best in that role during 2010. This time he had the 2nd best 1.37 entry-kill rating and the best entry kill-death difference of +23 (45 first kills, 22 first deaths). Also, he was the Top Fragger of the tournament with 267 kills.

1) Player Team KPR DPR Rating
Ukraine Ioann 'Edward' Sukhariev Ukraine Na´Vi
0.90 0.61 1.31

4 x MotM, Highest rating: 2.08 vs Sweden Lions (Group stage, tuscan)

In his previous appearance on the big stage, Ioann "Edward" Sukhariev led the Ukrainian team to winning IEM5 World Championship, and he came second in the MVP vote for that tournament.

This time, Na´Vi finished in 3rd place after a close loss to SK in the semi-final while Sukhariev was the best player of their campaign by far. He had a 1.31 rating, 19% above team average, with 4 'man of the match' performances. Those included a 31-11 score against Lions in a 16:7 win, 22-6 in 16:5 second map win over fnatic in the quarter-final and 27-11 in his last match, 3rd place decider 16:6 second map win over ESC Gaming.

He did somewhat underperform in the semi-final against SK, but in the end he managed a great 1.23 playoff-rating, 3rd best of all players.

Sukhariev was also the best entry killer of the event, with a total of 48 first frags and the highest entry-kill rating of 1.40. He did well in pistol-rounds too, having 4th best 1.33 pistol-round rating.

Note: This ranking is based on Rating (read about it here). It doesn't necessarily represent an ordered list of the best players at the event, but instead singles out the ones who played well in their matches using the formula described in the page linked above.

Honorable mention

One player out of those whose teams didn't make it past the group stage particularly deserved to be mention. TCM Gaming finished their participation at 4th place in Group B, with 1 win, 2 draws and 2 losses, while their best player Michael "Friis" Jørgensen played more than well in each of those matches.

He ended up with the best rating at the event of 1.33 (33% above team's average) and he excelled in every other regard as well. His AWP was as lethal as ever, recording by far the best 0.43 awpKPR at the tournament, including two 20-kill displays against Moscow Five and fnatic.

He was amazing in pistol-rounds too with a 1.86 pistol-round rating (highest at the event), and also as an entry killer (1.37, 3rd highest), continuing great form from Xperia PLAY where he was the top AWPer and entry killer.

MVP and All-Star lineup vote

The organizers of DreamHack Summer 2011 have per their tradition already named the MVP right after the end of the tournament, but we will nevertheless continue our new tradition of allowing users to vote for their MVP and consulting experts on that matter as well.

Martin "trace" Heldt is an obvious choice for the MVP nominee list, as his official prize is more than backed up by his performances, despite the fact that his team mTw finished in 2nd place.

From the winning team, SK Gaming, we will have two nominees, their best rated and the most consistent player of the tournament, Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund, and also the best AWPer and in many opinions MVP of the final match – Marcus "Delpan" Larsson.

The last nominee is Ioann "Edward" Sukhariev, best rated player of the tournament who helped Natus Vincere to third place.

So, who was the Most Valuable Player of DreamHack MSI Championship in your opinion? Do you agree with the official award or you think someone else deserved it more?

We will also be choosing the All-Star lineup of this tournament, so go ahead and select the 5 best players in your opinion. Whether you want it to be a realistic squad where each player would have a role or simply the 5 best performers is up to you.

Just like during our previous votes, we will be having a separate poll for "experts" only, which will later together with the public poll decide the outcome of the vote. The experts will consist of players who took part in this tournament, as well as journalists from other websites.

For more statistics from this tournament you can go here, while HLTV demos can be found here. We will be announcing the results of the vote next week after we've gathered enough votes, so stay tuned to HLTV.org to see if our community will confirm Heldt as the MVP or not and who will be in the All-Star lineup.

trace truly deserved the award imo.. anyway jesus fucking christ, friis.. What to say seriously, this guy deserves a better team. Every tournament he attends, he always gets mentioned in the end but hardly ever makes it to the list itself, only because of his team not making to the play offs. How can anyone doubt his skill is beyond me, last year he was one of the best awps statswise, and the last few months he has been outstanding. For me he is definitely one of the best awps in the world at the moment, and imagine him being in mTw? Do not get me wrong, TCM is a good team, but Friis is definitely a level above, and deserves to play on one of the best teams in the world.

Friis you are, and have always been, a star. You excell your team every time. I'm impressed today, as well as every other time, the stats of an event are published :-D Danish: Michael du er og har altid været en chef.

"By the 8th century, the common Germanic language of Scandinavia, Proto-Norse, had undergone some changes and evolved into Old Norse. This language began to undergo new changes that did not spread to all of Scandinavia, which resulted in the appearance of two similar dialects, Old West Norse (Norway and Iceland) and Old East Norse (Denmark and Sweden)." Please, these arguments of who is better is pointless because none of them hold any ground. Swedish was not the first basic language.

trace for MVP!
2011-07-08 00:54
Hmmmmm? "until now when the organizers of DreamHack Summer 2011 gave him one for his performance in this tournament." What I can remember on stage, the Dreamhack organizers (Ponde) came to the stage and asked Nixon how we know who is the MVP? Nixon said something like: Do we go after this game or statics/rating.. And then he said stright away trace MVP. What I can see should Edward get the MSI Laptop if we go after rating ;) Cheeeeeers and thanks everyone who saw my games, hope ill do better in Kiev tomorrow!!

well cant say you should only go after finals since Edward played better, trace was to be honest not good at all in the final thats why I wrote it :)

That makes no sense at all. You won't pick trace because he wasn't very good in the final, but you want to pick Edward who didn't even play the finals? You do realise trace was the best player in the play-offs, and he was way above his team all the way leading them to the finals. I fail to see how he doesn't deserve the title. If only the finals counted though, you wouldve been mvp, but overall trace was probably the most valuable, but oh well.

why f0rest has 70 % in all star lineup ? Yes, he's great player, he played great versus SK but it wasn't dreamhack game. 9) Player Team KPR DPR Rating Johan 'face' Klasson SK Gaming 0.74 0.63 1.10 0 x MotM, Highest rating: 1.72 vs Na´Vi (Semi-final, nuke) SK Gaming's Johan "face" Klasson, often called their backup player, was already nominated for All-Star lineups on two occasions this year for his performances in IEM5 WC and Xperia PLAY. JUST READ IT ! HE IS NOT THE BEST IN HIS TEAM BUT HE IS MOST CONSTANTLY PLAYER , SO HE DESERVED TO BE IN ALL-STAR TEAM !

Delpan should be named the DreamHack Summer 2011 M.V.P becauase he deserves it! I think he was the biggest factor when they won the tournament, important frags, winning important rounds for them, and he was the best AWPer in the tournament. You could see the difference with Delpan in the team and when they had allen/dennis. Delpan filled in the role that no one else could, and the role that SK Gaming need to win tournaments. Delpan for M.V.P!

How can you write "Delpan - MVP" despite of good game done by Edward&markeloff. For example, markeloff is over Delpan on rifle, awp, all weapons. Take a look on demo of markel and see how can he play with all the weapons, and then come here and post smart. Edward - MVP, the stats say it pretty well.

you dont judge all stars by performances in one tourney you do all tourneys just like neo forest is an allstar he deserves to be in a lineup that simple quit with fake rationalizing fanboyism and look at reality forest neo and trace should and would be on any all star lineup then add 2 its simple logic...
2011-07-08 23:26
1 reply
Mm, actually yes you do, or at least you should, for this vote.. It's a vote for All-star lineup of DH Summer, not overall, and choices should be based on players' performances in this tourney. I guess many people missed that point, but I dunno how I could have emphasized it more than saying "All-Star lineup of DreamHack Summer 2011?" above the vote...
