EG wins American IEM6 Kiev qualifier
The North American IEM6 Global Challenge Kiev qualifier has finished with Evil Geniuses coming out on top and qualifying for the event to be held next month.
Only four teams ended up signing up with teams such as Back2Back Gaming missing the registration, but fan favorites Check-Six, EG and Ultimax Gaming all participated for a chance to represent the Americas in Kiev.
The qualifier was played out in a simple group stage format where each team played one another in best-of-three series and the winner of the group would win the qualifier. Despite all teams being fairly evenly matched, every series actually ended up in a fairly lopsided 2-0 win.
In the opening round EG took down UMX, while Check-Six beat Xtreme Op which is a team composed of lower level US players. In the next round Danny "fRoD" Montaner's team took down UMX as well, while Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert's Evil Geniuses defeated extreme op. The scene was set for a best-of-three grand final between Gilbert's EG and Montaner's Check Six for a spot in Kiev.
Opening map was de_tuscan where EG had a solid eight round counter-terrorist side, enough to clinch the map with an 8-4 second half. Deciding map was de_dust2 where Gilbert's team jumped up to a 14-1 lead at half before closing the game at 16-10.
1. Evil Geniuses - a spot in IEM6 Global Challenge Kiev
3. Ultimax Gaming
4. Xtreme Op
This means Evil Geniuses is now qualified for the final global challenge of IEM6 featuring CS 1.6, which will offer $40,000 in prizes and be held at Kiev CyberSports Arena on January 19-22 in Kiev, Ukraine.
It has however been rumored that none of the American teams have the required backing to travel to Kiev, in which case this qualifier might turn out to be another event simply for bragging rights, like the IEM6 Global Challenge Guangzhou qualifier.
Should Evil Geniuses drop out, it could mean we would see up to seven European teams participating at the event. Stay tuned to HLTV.org to find out who will end up making the trip to Kiev next month.
