fnatic are the winners of Copenhagen Games 2012, following an amazing match and a quadruple overtime win over Natus Vincere in the Grand final (28:25 on de_dust2).
The Grand final of Copenhagen Games 2012 pitted the until-then undefeated new lineup of fnatic against Natus Vincere who fought through almost the entire lower bracket to reach the last match. The Swedish-Danish squad needed to win only one map, while the Ukrainians needed to win two in order to get to first place.
The match started on de_dust2, with Natus Vincere on the favored Terrorist side. However, fnatic were the ones who seemed more focused early on, as they racked up a 4-0 lead before letting a round go. They increased the lead to 6-2 following some aggressive play, but then Natus Vincere woke up.
The Ukrainians slowly but surely won round after round, and managed to turn the score to their favor 8-6, mainly by attacking the A bombsite. In the last round of the half, fnatic's main AWPer Michael "Friis" Jørgensen stepped up after being completely unnoticed the previous fourteen rounds, as he made two impressive AWP kills and then won a 1vs1 situation to make the score 8-7.
As the second half went under way, Sergey "starix" Ischuk starred in the pistol-round, getting 4 headshots by defending B from his usual spot. That certainly brought the spirits up in the Ukrainian camp and they went on to win another three rounds for a 12-7 lead.
In the next few rounds, impressive individual play saved fnatic from further doom, starting with Richard "Xizt" Landström's 4-kill action in the A bombsite. Right after that, Michael "Friis" Jørgensen won a 1vs3 situation in B, and two rounds later Finn "karrigan" Andersen took out four Na`Vi members to get to a 12-11 score and force another eco.
With the score standing at 12-12, Natus Vincere finally stopped fnatic's onslaught and went on to reach match point at 15-12. The Swedes and the Danes were up to the task though, as they managed to bring the match to overtime winning three rounds in a row.
Na`Vi already had an overtime clash a few hours earlier today, when they defeated Lemondogs on this very map 19-17, although on that occasion they were the ones playing catch up in the end and finally emerging as winners.
Sides didn't change for the first half of overtime, with fnatic attacking successfully to take their first lead since the early parts of the match, 16-15. Natus Vincere replied straight away, but fnatic ended up leading 17-16 after the first part, mainly thanks to an unexpected solo push by Andreas "MODDII" Fridh that opened up the B bombsite.
After the side change, fnatic defended A impressively and climbed up to championship point at 18-16. With everything to lose, Natus Vincere desperately needed to stay in the game, and they managed to convert a 3-on-5 situation to make the score 18-17. Another attack on the B bombsite proved to be fruitful for the Ukrainians as they evened the score at 18-18 and brought the match into second overtime.
This time the sides did change before the start of the next overtime, fnatic starting as Terrorists and once again going into the lead first, 19-18. A 1vs2 clutch by Danylo "Zeus" Teslenko brought the score to 19-19, before his team came out on top of a big confrontation at long A to finally get into the lead in the overtime, 20-19.
At the start of the second half of the second overtime, fnatic evened the score to 20-20 thanks to solid individual play by Rasmus "Gux" Ståhl in a 3-on-3 retake, as he took down all Na`Vi members including a 1vs1. The Ukrainians went back into the lead and match point shortly, but fnatic saved themselves in the last round to take the map into third overtime, 21-21.
Natus Vincere continued attacking at the start of the third overtime, and they went up 22-21 thanks to Yegor "markeloff" Markelov and Ioann "Edward" Sukhariev converting a 2-on-4 situation. Markelov had another impressive round after that, getting four AWP kills and almost winning a 1vs2 situation with 1hp, but Jørgensen defused the bomb to even the score at 22-22. Still, Na`Vi did get ahead 23-22 before the sides changed, and shortly after went onto match point at 24-22.
Facing defeat, fnatic were saved by Andreas "MODDII" Fridh's 4-kill round that brought the score to 24-23 and then they found a way to win another one, taking the match into yet another overtime, fourth for those who are counting.
At the start of the 4th overtime, Natus Vincere was the first one to win a round, but fnatic was the one to end up ahead at half time, 26-25. Shortly after, fnatic climbed on championship point once again at 27-25. This time there was no saving the Ukrainians as the celebrations started for fnatic following an incredible 28-25 victory.
