Team ranking: September 2011

After a long break, we are finally able to bring back our Team ranking. However, before getting you fully up to date, we will firstly look back into history and quickly make up for the missed months, starting with the not-so-eventful September.

It's been a long time since we announced our first, and until now only, edition of the Team ranking back in August, but we are finally able to bring that feature back. For those who don't know, or have perhaps forgot, what this was about, here is a reminder of how the ranking is made.

The purpose of this ranking is to, as objectively as possible, rank the teams based on their results and achievements in international tournaments. Its purpose is not to claim that Team A is better than Team B, but to help everyone keep track of the form of top teams and their overall success.

Initially, each event is given a level from 1-9 based on the following three factors: how well known the event is, the variety of countries represented and the number of top teams in attendance.

Points for each team in each event are then calculated, where a team can win or lose points based on the following factors:

  • team's final placing at the event
  • winning or drawing a match
  • bonus points for defeating a higher ranked opponent (inversely, the higher ranked team will lose points)
  • bonus points for round difference

All of these factors give a different amount of points based on the level of the event. For example, getting a top3 placing at IEM5 European Finals brings more points than the same placing at ICSC 8.

Finally, there is a depreciation system in place, which considers the fact how old an event is, decreasing the amount of points distrubuted from previous events as time passes. For example, points gained during IEM5 World Championship in March are in September worth 70% of their initial value. Also, an inactive team will see its place decrease after losing points month after month.

Events in September

The ranking includes events dating back to the very beginning of the year, but let's see which September events caused the latest changes.

We witnessed a pretty inactive month with only two noteworthy events.

Mainly, the final qualifiers for the Global Challenge in New York were played online, during which Evil Geniuses, Backfire and Temporary secured the American spots, while SK Gaming, Moscow Five and mTw took the European spots.

IEM6 GC New York final qualifer
Sweden fnatic Denmark Anexis Germany mousesports
United States Evil Geniuses United States Backfire  United States Temporary

Apart from that, the only other event was DreamHack South Europe, at which k1ck secured a spot for Dreamhack Winter, thanks to their victory in the final against DN-Gaming.

Dreamhack South Europe
Portugal k1ck

Will these minor events have any influence on the overall ranking? How do these teams compare when looking at September results only? Read on to see the answers.

The Top 10
of the month

Let's take a closer look at the top 10 teams of September and see what affected their place on the list.

10
. Spain DN-Gaming

DN-Gaming finished 2nd at DreamHack South Europe after a close final loss to k1ck. The Spanish team performed decently at this event, drawing against Ricardo "fox" Pacheco's team in the group stage and winning against Defining Stars in the semi-final. Thanks to that, they obtained the 10th place of the monthly ranking.

Top matches: Spain DN-Gaming 15-15 Portugal k1ck
Spain DN-Gaming 2-1 Portugal Defining Stars

Results: 2nd at DreamHack South Europe

 9. Poland Frag eXecutors

Frag eXecutors were the team of the month in August, but as September came they failed to qualify for another IEM Global Challenge. Even though Golden Five reached the final qualifier for GC New York, they were immediately knocked out in the quater-final by Moscow Five.

Results: 5-8th at GC New York EU final qual

 8. Sweden Lions

Lions made a good impression after beating SK Gaming at the first GC New York EU qualifier. Unfortunately, they faced them again in the quarter-final of the final qualifier and were unable to repeat that performance.

Top matches: Sweden Lions 2-1 Sweden Sk Gaming
  Sweden Lions 2-1 Germany Alternate

Results: 5-8th at GC New York EU final qual

  Portugal k1ck 2-1 Spain DN-Gaming

Results: 1st DreamHack South Europe

5. Finland WinFakt

Top matches: Finland WinFakt 2-0 Germany Alternate

Results: 5-8th at GC New York EU final qual

That's true. For exemple Nix0n is writing the news about trace joining Xapso taking zanoj's place.

unlike you, i actually do have access to un-released news posts, and there is nothing coming up regarding trace or xapso right now, stop leading people wrong who might actually believe your lies.

2012-04-17 02:30
there was no news post created at the time of posting, the news itself was apparently already out on xplayn when thejoy posted it so he must have just guessed it was on its way, but it actually wasn't yet :). besides, there are tons of users who know more stuff than i do as far as player changes go, especially seeing as i was traveling the entire day and in new york on the weekend so i had virtually no online time apart from the two posts i finished :P

Finally people will see at the end of the 2011 ranking of these posts why the following rank is the ranking for 2011: 1. AGAiN 2. SK Gaming 3. Na'Vi i'm not fan of any time in particular, but I hate the fanboys of either team saying their team is the best.. I'm just fan of the best play out there ;)
2012-04-16 20:42
n1.AGAiN !!! n2.SK n3.Na'Vi AGAiN the best team 2011 and Neo the best player 2011 ! but nice :)
2012-04-16 20:47
- 1. 1031.59 SK Gaming - 2. 876.53 Frag eXecutors - 3. 766.92 Natus Vincere learn 2 read.
2012-04-16 21:18
You really think that SK was the best team in 2011?
2012-04-16 21:28
yes i do. Got a problem big boy?
2012-04-16 21:32
WCG 1. ESC (Neo, TaZ, kuben, pasha, Loord) - $25,000 2. SK (GeT_RiGhT, f0rest, Delpan, RobbaN, face) - $6,000 ESWC 1. SK (GeT_RiGhT, f0rest, Delpan, RobbaN, face) - $12,000 2. NaVi (Edward, markeloff, ceh9, starix, Zeus) - $6,000 3. mouz (zonixx, gob b, karrigan, roman, ninja) - $4,000 4. AGAiN (Neo, TaZ, kuben, pasha, Loord) - $3,000 As ESWC being more Prestigefull that year but with less money, does that make ESC better? Really, are you serious?
2012-04-16 22:05
Please, complete your argument with other tournaments also.
2012-04-16 22:08
lol poor kid got speechless?
2012-04-16 22:10
No, unlike you I have many arguments which I want to say now, but I'm probably older and wiser than you and I know that this discussion won't go any further so I will just stop here. Believe or speak what you want. I don't want to ruin your happiness.
2012-04-16 22:20
Im glad you accepted that you were wrong mate!
2012-04-16 22:25
Yeah, you are the winner. Gratz
2012-04-16 22:38
agree, sk was the best in 2011.
2012-04-17 14:59
SK won harder tournaments so why not?
2012-04-16 21:34
i dont think so..
2012-04-16 21:44
It's not true. SK won 3 out of 5 tournaments where FX didn't participate because of financial problems. Not to mention, who placed higher on other major tournaments. hltv.org/blog/5226-tournament-rankings-2.. sk-gaming.com/content/36079-Polish_power..
2012-04-16 21:44
fx not attending 3 out of 5 tournaments SK won doesnt make the tournaments less harder then the tournaments Fx won. just look up the tournaments u can see which team won harder tournaments :) :D

For no reason, could you please reply to me on other comment (#121)?
2012-04-16 21:53
AGAiN was better than the SK-Gaming mone all know, the SK is never a problem of organization like the Poles, who must shift changes every month, so stop talking, and accepts all the best are the Polish and not SK
2012-04-16 23:33
first off... 5-5 in major titles (if u can count WCG as a major title since it was a fucking joke last year). And second... stay at school i could barlely understand that english lol.
