DreamHack Summer to feature CS

DreamHack has announced that the upcoming summer event will feature a tournament with eight teams and a 100,000SEK prize purse.

Since the conclusion of the 2011 winter event, no information was released from DreamHack in regards of Counter-Strike 1.6 for their 2012 events. While announcing the DreamHack Open series, it turned out to be aimed at another popular game at DreamHack, the RTS game StarCraft II.

Today the DreamHack organization announced that the summer event will be featuring a Counter-Strike 1.6 tournament. The tournament will feature eight teams, of which six have already been found via invites. The six invited teams are:

Sweden SK Gaming Sweden fnatic Ukraine Natus Vincere
Poland ESC Gaming Russia Moscow Five Sweden Lemondogs

The remaining two teams will be found via the onsite BYOC qualifier, which will take place on the first day of the summer event, Saturday, June 16.

Plantronics and Kingston are the sponsors of the tournament, providing a 100,000SEK prize purse, equivalent to roughly $15,000. The prize purse will be split between top four placed teams.

1. 50,000SEK ($7,268)
2. 25,000SEK ($3,634)
3. 12,500SEK ($1,817)
4. 12,500SEK ($1,817)

The tournament will begin in a best-of-one map group stage, two groups of four teams, with top two advancing to the playoffs. Playoffs will be played best-of-three maps in a single-elimination bracket and just like previous DreamHack events, the final will be played in DreamArena Extreme, an arena with 1,100 seats.

DreamHack Summer will also feature the 2012 Swedish Championship, featuring eight teams, including fnatic, SK Gaming and Lemondogs.

DreamHack Summer will run June 16-19 in Jönköping, Sweden and HLTV.org will obviously be on site to provide you with coverage.

Although Greykarn (Working for DH) wrote in a thread on fragbite that because of the Swedish Masters are being played at the same time as this tournament they have made it into a smaller event. He also mentioned that the DH Winter edition will from now on be the bigger tournament and will feature a larger prize purse and more teams. And i might be wrong but i think that last years Summer edition also had 100.000 SEK in prize money

true, I guess they want to limit the schedule, as it was always so insanely fully packed, and stretched the scheduled competition hours by miles usually. I remember a 16 hour long day of casting at DH summer 2011, almost non stop play (matches were scheduled for every hour!!)

Some may call this awesome news, but in all honesty a 8 slot event is seriously messed up... tournaments should feature 32-64 teams not 8-16 :( this is surely going in the wrong direction...

2012-05-10 14:48
sad should atleast be 12 teams, so 10 invite and 2 spot for byoc, will probably see wikipeidiots, winfakt and probably a .no team fighting for last spots at the site, will be a hard byoc fosure. anyways the price money aint that high so some teams might prefer to not attend, and maybe thats the reason they didnt bother to invite teams outside europe.

2012-05-10 18:45
They are excluding non-top teams from tournaments like these with ridiculious steps for hosting just a 8 slot tournament. Make it a invite only then sponsored by sponsors from those eight teams. This completely makes no sense. You show the world there is no more space for other CS players than the best eight teams in the world. With other words you're saying: "CS is dead, go play a other game kids." Not to mention Dreamhack became big THANKS to this game. You can say no, but it's simply the truth and I think a lot of Swedes could agree on this part of the story. Just my 2 cents. Not hating because I'm totally nt good enough for eight best teams, not even the best 16 teams, but hey it's very clear what the message is for the Counter-Strike community addressed by Dreamhack. I'm waiting for the shift to CS:GO, it's just the final good-bye for CS 1.6, the winter edition will def. feature CS:GO. Too hard they aren't making this message clear on their website or public statements. They threat us like fools, but I think a majority of the CS players aren't that stupid. By the way, lol @ the B-sponsors: Plantronics and Kingston. Why would they even use Plantronics as a sponsor for a CS tournament? Does this even makes sense? CS'ers were using Plantronics in 2006 when SteelSeries was still called SteelPad while making metal and glass mousepads.
